What is your favorite class to play as a Tank?

I want to spec one character to be a main dungeon / trial tank.

I recently switched from PS to PC, and I would like to dedicate one character to be a Tank again.

I've played DK as a Tank before, but I'm unsure if I want to go this route again.

So what is your favorite class for Tanking?

In U29 my double role dps/tank now hits armor cap and has infinite sustain if maintain my rotations when in his tank setup which wasn't possible previously with just a gear and skills swap. His setup also provides heals as a support tank, so heals, plenty of ice crowd control, armor cap and infinite sustain.

Its really down to personal preference I think, currently I only tank on DK but Ive tanked on Warden, Nightblade and Sorc in the past. My DK is setup as tank for 3DD runs, with Battalion Defender, Master S&B (front bar), Yoln (back bar) and Lord Warden/Encratis/Tremorscale depending on the group.

I do want to try out Necromancer some day, a lot of skills and passives look pretty nice for tanking.

i am really enjoying sorc tank in pvp as spell symmetry and dark exchange synergize quite well for basically infinite stam sustain and healing...

but for pve, and bc of the cool ice skills, i like warden the most. :)

Playing dragonknight, warden, nightblade, necromancer, and sorcerer tanks in veteran dungeons... I have to say nightblades are by far the strongest and most enjoyable to me. With sorcerer and warden as second. Dragonknights are very strong, but I for some reason do not like to play those as much. Necro is alright, nice crowdcontrol, but massively lacks any kind of meaningful selfheal. Making this the worst class to tank with, in my opinion.

I played DK the most but lately I've taken quite the fondness for Warden Tanking.
I find it much easier to go with none-selfish sets for Warden with the AOE Major Resolve+Protection, Best heal (Health based and ulti), Good sustain, minor toughness and free cleanses. Chains are mostly better than Frozen Device, but you can cast Frozen Devices through enemies.. This is really handy when tall and bulky enemies are in your face blocking your vision.

You also got minor vulnerability on a cooldown and decent CC with Grippling Shards.

Whether you go 3dd runs or none-selfish sets, I find the natural survivability of a Warden hard to beat.

As context I only have experience with nightblade, necro, and dragonknight. The necro scythe heal always felt really strong to me, even with the only enemy to hit with it being the boss.
Out of the 3 classes I've used, necro feels the strongest in terms of tankiness, followed by nightblade, then DK. I don't know what's wrong with me but whenever I played DK I teetered on the edge of death or flat out died way too often. Never happens with necro or nightblade.
Overall for me, necro feels stronger but is harder to play than NB. I like NB the most though because I like it thematically more.

Not sure how she'd hold up for the toughest content. But for chill 5 key runs I prefer my pure sta templar tank with maelstrom 2h backbar. Repentance makes resource managment so much easier on quick runs.

    Templar
This is a difficult question for me because I have two tanks - a DK main tank and my templar offtank - and I love my DK tank. He's ridiculously strong, even with support gear on. But I rarely get to play him because he's a little less versatile and a little more healer dependent than my offtank.

So while I'm fully aware of my templar tank's shortcomings, I enjoy playing him a lot more because I can do so many different things with him that my DK tank simply can't do. My templar tank is fully capable of tanking hard content in 3 DPS 1 tank format - while healing the group and keeping them alive. He does better in trials and dungeons where the tank has to be away from the group/healer because he is better at self/healing and self-sustaining. He's a perfect second tank for trials where the offtank is really only there for 1-2 fights, as the rest of the trial, he can step in to give extra heals and wear additional support sets.

So overall, if I have to pick a tank to play on, I generally take my templar offtank. I'll only take my DK tank when I know we're doing something that is really really difficult.

I enjoy doing dungeon content with new folks and casual guild groups and for that the templar tank is just a load of fun. I know some folks dislike templar tanks but there is so much you can provide to a weaker group as well as covering for any healing lapses or dead healers on the trip. Doubly so now we've got tormentor and AoE taunts.

For more serious stuff I've got DK and necro tanks. They are probably better at most of the vet content but nothing like the fun and they tend to need a proper group with someone providing plenty of the other buffs.

Also have warden or sorc tanks - all fun in their own way but not as much as the templar.

    Nightblade because:

    1. It's my one and only

    2. The Class is gimped for Tanking, so I enjoy the challenge of being a great Nightblade Tank. I go out of my way to use as many of their Skills as is reasonable. It's challenging but when you dig deeper there is a lot there to as with.

I won't vote yet because I only have one tank so far and it's a Templar. I enjoy trying to tank on that class because of its theme and the support healing. I just wish they had better debuffs and crowd control abilities.

Edit: on second thought, I will vote because ZOS needs to know that Templar tanks exist (or at least try to).

Played a Dragonknight tank and it’s a big difference.

Classes can do all roles but that doesn’t mean they’re great at all of them.

Templar is being shifted to a healer

I voted Warden because I enjoy it the most for a lot of content, though Necromancer is right behind it. They are my go-to for most four man content and get good trial rotation with my DK. My DK is my super challenge class I bring when something is going to be crazy hard, so not that I don't enjoy using him, I'm probably just burned out on him. I also want to add that my favorite class: Templar, gets a huge RIP here for being my least favorite class to tank with and by far the worst for tanking overall.

Honestly tank class matters far less than it use to, and that is a healthy thing for the game.

I still believe DK has the best set up for pure tanking. By pure tanking I mean somebody who is only interest in doing the job of a tank as opposed to tanking and healing.

But even then, as a DK tank I only use 3 class abilities out of 12 slots. Because so many tools for tanking has been given to non class lines. Again, this is good.

Yes, why have Class identity and strengths and weaknesses that require choices that have real consequence?

I’m assuming that was sarcasm. I’m not suggesting that choice doesn’t matter. I’m referring back to darker days.

There was a time when there were two types of tanks. There were dragon knights, and then there were those who were clearly not serious because they weren’t dragon knights.

It is a very good healthy thing that we are now able to argue about what is best. Part of that has been to take tools only available to a DK and make it accessible to other classes through non class skill lines.

This has made class choice less crucial, not irrelevant. And this is good.

I pretty much always have a tank of each class on the go (except Templar) and for a good while now my favourite tank to play in dungeons has been the Sorc tank, closely followed by the Nightblade Tank.

Everyone has their own preference and playstyle though.

It also allows for more sets to be tried and used based on the strong suits of a class.

Hard choice for sure! So I just leveled 3 tanks (dk, templar, and warden) during this event and I'm tending towards the warden. The icy imagery and overall supportive nature just seems really natural to me. DK's are cool though - love all the crowd control and resource management they get. I made my warden a Nord, so he's got a rock solid fantasy behind him. My dk tank is temporarily stam-dd but I've got this whole Akaviri theme going. Both are blast, so it's a toss up for me.
