I know one time they asked us to clear out the crafting bags, and the mails as well for loading screen times. Which I think was done to try and reduce the database space. Also stuff does in fact backlog after so many mails you get. It makes it a pain to clear it out. Especially if you do pvp stuff. You got so much stuff from the pvp rewards system. Then there is of course the crafting stuff. So I can imagine there is quite a lot of database stuff just from the mailing system.
What this will do is stuff actually gets deleted over time. For thousands and thousands of accounts, this will clear out a lot of stuff they tend to store or don't bother to clear out. I can actually see this as being a good thing, for one it will get more people to clear out their mailing more possibly. If they don't want to lose out on the stuff. Second what it will do is reduce their database size and the mailing backog.
The onliest reason for this annoying change is, that they want you to buy bag space and boxes and eso+, instead of using your mailbox for storage.

Are you sure about that? I can't remember such awful thing

I have mail I am sentimental about that is from 2016 that I want to hold onto. Others have mail from 2014 that they want to hold onto for one reason or another, from Day one expansion goodies to mail from deceased players. Please give us Archive function.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Why not just screenshot it and upload it? I'm completely failing to see what purpose does it serve (sentimental/valuable or not) inside your own private mailbox.
There could be a database error or some sort of addon acting up and you'd have this well kept mail going down the drain in the in an instant. In fact we're extremely lucky Zenimax didn't go ahead and push the delete button on everything single piece of old, empty (no items) mail ingame, forever removing it from existence instantly.
I also have and had have lots of sentimental pieces in my mailbox. I screenshot them and put them up online.
Your view on the matter just seems counterproductive.

With the number of idle accounts that hold mail stored in the servers, my one mail from 2016 saved in an archive folder would not hurt the hamster. Nor would other people's. With their cycle of auto- deletion freeing up space, making room for ones kept would be no additional strain.
It's special, it's communication from ZOS, it's like a time capsule. I deserve to keep it. The real thing.
