My wife went on about how much she loved this outfit for nearly 5 minutes. Different people have different tastes when it comes to style. Just because it shows skin doesn't automatically mean it's designed solely for the evil male gaze. I mean - really - you're suggesting women aren't part of the design team. Unfortunate, really.

Can’t wait to hear how Tera’s designs are targeted toward women because some women like the thong armor.

There’s a different between multiple communities liking something, and that thing being designed for a particular community. Not that this accomplished it on either front, the thing is ugly and reminds me of middle aged Walmart goers who think they’re rocking the booty shorts.

Some women do, some don't. Both options are valid, as long as it's individual's choice.
But the whole idea that female sexuality only exists to appease men is sexist af. There's plenty of women irl who buy lingerie, do makeup etc because they enjoy it (even if no one gets to see said lingerie). There are even modders like Krista (nsfw link), who actually like the whole armored bikini aesthetic.
Thing is, it's much more complicated then "catering to 12 year old boys". I don't care about this specific outfit, but I hate the notion that women, even digital ones, must be covered no matter what. Female body is not some filthy thing that must be hidden away.

Preach. Especially the sexy = must be for the male gaze bit.🙄

Side note, their Wal-Mart comment makes me think their Wal-Mart is much more interesting than mine.

I really dislike the front-flap on this costume. I feel like this could have been a very strong JRPG-inspired costume without the front-flap. The un-dyable metal bits is also disappointing. Overall, I like the outfit, but I can't help hating that could love it with only two changes; dyable metal bits and zero front-flap.

Well, lets face it, without the frontflap half the playerbase would zoom in to see if those hotpants are as tight as they look. Purely out of of an interest for tailoring of course.

The front flap helps reduce the tramp level of a thigh high boots + hot pants outfit, but IMO a slant cut top in that shape would have been better than a reinforced leather flap. (But hey I'm a guy, what do I know about fashion)

When thinking about this costume today, i think i get why the skimpy options are so crap in eso..

    [snip]

What i find interesting is from just buying the dark shaman costume.. i thought it was going to just be a dumb bikini for the sake of showing skin.. but with the dye system ive made it look amazing and have its proper place in the general look for my character. Was very impressed how much i could make that pretty much topless bikini fit into eso in general.

Yeah i don't know if i like the new one. Didn't hate it as much as expected which is a plus. The flap doesn't bother me. Will wait until getting sick of the current costumes for this one though :) Not skimpy enough for an instabuy. Also bonus points for making the.. err.. chest window work.. the holiday in balmora is complete crap.

I totally agree with this, and I’m a woman too. I haven’t decided yet whether I will purchase this costume or not, but I generally like dark and sexy costumes. Outfits are already very much covering in general, so it gives some variety to have different types of costumes to show of your character.

I think these discussions about sexy things being made “for 12-year-olds” resembles those claims when people state that “characters with big chest and backside are the way to recognize men playing female characters” or those 12-year-olds. Well, I’m sorry, but most of my characters have big breasts and even bigger backside with a smallish waist. Because I like how that looks. I have no problem with different shaped characters and I like the variety in NPCs, but personally I like to make and play sexy looking characters with pretty faces (of course with some badassness added). I guess it’s part of the game for me that you can play as a character which looks you can admire or look up to.

Edit. And yes, the flap seems kinda out of place to me. I don’t really see how that fits better than being without it.

Best answer in the thread. Such flaps on ESO costumes do seem to be ZOS’s thing, either because it’s a stylistic choice or they perhaps have an aversion to showing a certain portion of the female anatomy in particular. In any case I just expect them and don’t have a problem with them.

Personally I like the costume, looks great on my lady vampire which I suppose is the point. The only issue I could have with the flap is that to me it appears to be too long, and needs to be about 12 inches shorter.

The appearance of this outfit again leaves me wondering why the Elven Hero Armour outfit, that appeared in ESO’s trailer/cutscene and the splash screen for Summerset, has the bare thigh portions blacked out on the character model.

I don't think the issue is with sexy women in videogames. It's when female characters are only given sexy options to wear. (Which isn't the case at all in ESO btw). And males are given 0 sexy options to wear.
Sexy females are okay, non sexy females are okay, sexy males are okay and non sexy males are okay too. But when some games only make sexy females and unsexy males. It does feel of sexism. And it's directly taking away options from people too.
I personally do like non sexy females because I think it's a much less used trope in games and media, and I like my sexy males because it's eye candy and also not very used trope in media, unless it's for laughs, or to be weird.
In tera most female armor is sexualized and most male armor is not, which is an issue IMO, for example.
As for this costume, hmm not my cup of tea, I don't like the flap as usual, and the jacket is too short. I would make the jacket longer and remove the flap. Now it looks like a slutty child boy scout version of a vampire outfit.

When thinking about this costume today, i think i get why the skimpy options are so crap in eso..

    [snip]

It's actually much more common, even now, for video game fashion to be based on old school gender norms. And anyway, none of ESO's costumes are intrinsicly male or female, right? They're just costumes that anyone can wear. ESO gives you that freedom to make your own choice.

No one's born wearing a bikini or basketball shorts.

What do you mean by "look uninspiring" and "prefer same gender in relationships"? Not sure what the connection you're making is
    [snip]

I don't see where there's "courage" involved in making gender-specific outfits, which is in fact very mainstream and traditional. It actually takes more courage and defiance to allow male characters to wear dresses, because it still makes some people red in the face to see things like that. 50 years ago, we would be having the same conversation about women being allowed to wear pants, which is normal now, but used to be very controversial. Times change

And IDK what you mean about BioWare, because I definitely want to see Morrigan's dress on Alistair ... purely for the sake of fashion science. And Mass Effect had many gender neutral civilian outfits a la Star Trek

The irony is that the mini-shorts is what really kills it for me. I get that's part of the point, but I think it would have looked better with a skirt (instead of the shorts and flap), or with tight pants (and no flap.) I'm underwhelmed.

This is exactly it for me. The shorts are fine...with a completely different outfit. And can we, for the love of the Divines, STOP with the effing shoulder windows? Whatever Child of the 80's who is slapping these stupid things on everything needs to be stopped. The whole thing is just so BADLY put together it hurts to look at it.

I don't think it would be a half of player base... But even if they are, so what? It's 18+ game... If someone wants one may run around without any clothes at all.
Also, we have shorts in game. Like the one from Zero Legion (from IC) or Agronian, for example. You can put them on without that flap.
If there was a half of player base zooming zero legion pants I have missed the result...

I'm now wondering if the flap is actually to hide the area if a male character puts on the Dark Passions outfit.

Like with how bodybuilders (and notably the Rock), tuck a towel into the front of their waistband when they're wearing tight compression leggings.

Well...since you went there, imho I don't think we could use the same reasoning why coverings like these exist for IRL people vs characters in a fantasy game. After seeing plenty of players remove all of their gear running around in only their knickers, the males in ESO are anatomically Ken dolls in the no-no nether regions so thankfully we don't have to worry about "Dirk Diggler" making an appearance in Tamriel -- especially when we already have a Volendrung to exaggerate that ideology.

    Flaps be damned.

The whole premise of the costume is creepy at best. I know marketing teams think everyone playing their game is a hormonal 12 year old who’s never seen a woman before but please chill out

That's rather toxic and quite sad of a view to have. The entirety and sum total of all gamers with female characters ( be they dudes, cis fem, trans, non, or anywhere on the gender spectrum) have nothing invested in taunting males or trolling 12yos lol. Gross.

People (google: "humans") like to look good, or fun, or cute sometimes. This outfit is a design fail with this GIANT pro-masculine ween flap that looks glued on as an afterthought by the PR department. Yeah, I bought it like we all did...and yeah, it'll never get worn.

The bottom line is, in a rated M game populated as afar as I know only by adults (some quite old, in fact), we can handle some cute shorts without the need for PR flaps added.

What's ironic is, one of my vet trial/dungeon stam dps chars is a pantsless build, [ 5-piece Perfected Lok w helm, half a monster Velidreth pauldron for + weap dam, Maelstrom bow back, 5-piece AY front dual wield dagger axe) and nobody gets triggered or loses their minds from it. It's way skimpier that the costume and uses plain outfit pages lol. It was more of a proof of concept than anything,, cuz I had a perf lok helm drop lol, though it does vet content no prob.

Only one time ever in a trial once, someone said "lol that elf has no pants on" that's it, and that's all. We can seriously handle a game without nonstop added flaps and nobody will lose their minds haha.
