I think most people that were having a hissy fit were people that had bought the game and then played without ever giving another penny. I know this will be an unpopular view but I feel that doesn't give them the right to an opinion (unless they'd only just bought the game) but makes them actually part of the problem, draining resources without contributing to its upkeep.
I appreciate the update, but just a point to consider;
You mentioned that you use bots to test the load but acknowledge that isn't as reliable a test because of them not accurately mimicking player activity. I also recall that when you tried to test this on the PTS, the testing event was done at an awkward time for EU and offered little incentive.
Therefore, can I suggest that your next test be exactly that.. a test - not an event. Don't commit to having it working, don't dangle rewards that people will miss out on if the event crashes. Have rewards linked purely to participation in testing the event.
You could run a GF Test Event where everyone that logs in and tries to use the GF gets a reward. Or make it a community event and say that if the community has X,000 people participate in the event then everybody who was logged in on each day gets a reward.
This way nobody gets frustrated, you get your group finder properly tested and nobody has unrealistic expectations about what's actually going to happen during the event.
- Update 23Ice Furnace: This item set now grants Spell Damage, rather than Weapon Damage for the 4 piece bonus

I mean I was genuine disappointed when the "upgraded" group finder tool was introduced and it was still missing this features and somehow they managed to make it work worse... and in some cases not work at all LOL.
But well... maybe, one day we will have this... full support for all Group Content. Arenas & Trials... one can only hope I guess...
The core issue we’ve been having with the new Activity Finder is that it shares many of the same system resources as the rest of the game. This means that when the Activity Finder gets overloaded, everything else on the server starts to bog down – which is why players experience long loading times, timeouts/disconnects, and sluggish server response at these times. It’s been a challenge for us to identify and fix these issues as each time we go through a cycle of overload, we fix that particular problem, but then discover a new one as new concurrency levels are hit.
