However as guildchats seem deserted it feels like it's either join Discord or play the game without much social interaction?

I see it like this, there was a time when a guild actually matters. Still does in a few games that are not eso where you can join 5 guilds.

Discord is a good tool to keep you updated on what is going on without having to log in a game and check guild infos(which usually dont hold enough writing space to post most things).

To socialise with your guild mates. That is what MMOs are all about. At least should be. To socialise, make friends. Playing together. You can random chit chat. while not even play the game, have some funny conversations outside the game while you are waiting for the bus or whatever.

You always have all information at hand in one place with enough space to put everything.

I know it is hard to understand, but people is what MMOs are actually about. MMOs are no singleplayer experiences. (Even though newer MMOs try to eliminate most human interaction)

And that is why something like discord is a god given.

Back in the day we had to use a guild website on top of the voice com tools like teamspeak etc. Discord combines everything into one. very useful.

My biggest issue with Discord and other "free" services is that "Free" services are never really free, they make money from the data they collect on users. If you are all right with not knowing what they collect and how it is being used then go ahead and use it.

You can request all your data collected.

^ Do this and check what they collect.

If you scared of data collection. Just leave the internet. Wherever you go, you data will be collected. Literally any website, any game/program that is online collects your data.

People are not always crazy about voice chat but for Raids or difficult dungeons we use Voice Chat. Our preference here is clear Discord cause it also offers so many features, Offline Boards for text messages and also pictures. TS can not offer such service. Also very handy are raid planers you can integrate in Discord and - it is FREE!

TS is no competition here anymore and most users get used to Discord and the superb features very fast.

They ignored the market shift for a good three to four years. They did absolutely nothing. The teamspeak 3 client is virtually still the same as it was 5 years ago.

They also completely missed the mark when it comes to servers. Your average Joe either has to pay to get a server from a provider, or host it themselves (and setting one up requires at least a general level of understanding of the commandline and probably linux). It's just not user friendly for people outside the tech scene to get up and running, unless you are willing to put down money.

Lastly, their policies regarding licensing are terrible. You have to have your own website and hand in proof (whatever that is supposed to mean) to get a non-profit license which will then up the 32 client limit to 512. Mind you, I have two such licenses, but I absolutely see no reason why the average person would go through all that crap when Discord does it at the click of a button.

Then, once you are done paying for your server, or waiting for your license. Guess what? The phone app costs money too!

Once again, I love Teamspeak. I still use it every single day. But as a company they have failed spectacularly at understanding their gaming audience and are now in a desperate last stand to save whatever is left. They lost. And they lost not because of inferior tech or anything out of their control. They lost because of negligence.

Innovate what exactly? The TS does what it's supposed to do, nothing more. It does one thing well.

And again, Discord is a data mining service. Does nobody now days know or care what that means?

....hint: it's not good to link your twitch, discord and Amazon accounts. This is how they put your real, actual name together with your "anonymous" online activity. This is how data mining services work.

You are better off not being in a guild with leadership like that. I have been in many guilds over the years, and can tell you from experience; be glad you're not a member of that guild anymore. There are SOOOOO many great guilds with very fun, very nice (and maybe a little prankish) members in them that make playing ESO a grand experience. Discord makes it even better. But mandatory discord and enforcing it tells me, whoever kicked you for not using discord does not have the leadership qualities to run an even marginally fun guild.

Agreed! You can not force guild members to anything. They are not part of your guild for long. This is a game and never should be "work" or mandatory. We only use voice when it is needed and let the players the choice to use voice or not. When they use it in Trials for example they see the advantage over typing in chat. In Trials there is almost no time to type messages in chat. In normal play style or normal dungeons there is no need for mandatory voice.

When you have guilds making stuff mandatory and you don´t like it - wrong guild.

Well, it would depend on what you are joining. In many cases, you are not just joining another guild, but a gaming community. In such cases, the leadership of such community might be building it around Discord as a social platform. Many guild leaders create such communities to have nice time together, both socializing and gaming. And when they see a prospect of not-wanting to be part of that, they just cut you lose. Totally normal - depends on what community leaders are rooting for.

In some specific cases, e.g. in the case of our Lodge of Sorceresses, the guild/community might have processes which are tightly integrated with Discord, both as a social platform and as a managerial one. In the example of Lodge, the whole community is run by in-house software which is basing all its processes on our Roster on Discord: ranks, events, all kinds of management (including onboarding of members). MMO communities have changed a lot: in old times when there existed no social platforms like Twitter etc, Voice-servers were used for group content only. In today's world of Web 3.0, voice-servers are not enough. That's why something like Discord was invented, which is more than just a voice-server like Teamspeak or Ventrilo.

This is the first I've heard that people use Discord for text chat. I can't imagine why, if they're actually playing the game. How can anyone stand to switch back and forth between screens to do things in the game and then look at a chat outside of it? Blech. I use Discord for voice chat but that's it, and my guild uses guild chat in-game to talk in text.

Mmm, no. Chat text is for example used in our guild fpr messages. Like Guild news, Guides, Links to other good websites/resources, addons and so on. It is used like this forum here. You can check in there every now and then to catch Guild news. No one types there text messages and expect you catch it righ away in game :)

Your PC, your Alexa, your cellphone, your smart watch, your TV, and even modern cars ...all is data mining. It depends what kind of data I give them.

I can manage what my browser shares, I don't use Alexa, my cell phone is a burner phone without my real information associated with it, I don't use a smart watch, I don't drive a car with Onstar, and I don't have a smart tv. I also do not use anti "social" media.

If we don't maintain our privacy now days, we don't have any. People need to know what data mining is and how it works.

Here, you forgot that. You may as well quit the game, the forums, leave the internet, go live in the woods and off the grid if you want to avoid having your privacy infringed because face it, we have none. If it wasn't companies doing it, it would be the government. And technically, they already do. Birth certificates, social security, licences, tax information. You've already given the biggest invaders of privacy your information.

It seems Discord is much more prevalent, and necessary, for PC gamers (not just ESO). The main reason seems to be organizing people. Whereas consoles have friends lists and gaming clubs to organize people, it seems that PC players don't have to use Steam to log in (one way to track and organize friends) and therefore there is not one centralized location where you can see your friends. I know on consoles there is some in-game UI for your "friends list" but it is severely lacking, and I assume the same is on PC as well (can't really remember what it looked like there). And the other main reason seems to be voice communication. Consoles have in-game voice communication for zone, groups, and each guild, as well as the fact that Xbox (and Sony too?) has party chats which is similar to TeamSpeak/Discord voice room. But PC players need a way to use voice communication, and services like Discord offer an all-in-one package (blog, chatroom, notices) that makes it extremely helpful to organize people in a somewhat disorganized environment. Even on consoles, you'll see some guilds try to use Discord or Band app, but it's just one more thing for console players to manage (usually via a phone) and you don't really see the activity that you'd see on a PC discord room (in a couple myself for some good testing information). So the original question of "does everyone use Discord" -- the answer is no.

My biggest issue with Discord and other "free" services is that "Free" services are never really free, they make money from the data they collect on users. If you are all right with not knowing what they collect and how it is being used then go ahead and use it.

I agree with the data collection thing.
Do you use Google or any other search engine? They do the same thing. If your that afraid of data gathering, get rid of your computer and your smart phone. Every time you go online someone is collecting something on you.

Now if the fact that I play ESO 2-3 hours most days and that I shopped for socks last week on Amazon is that valuable, hope they get good money for that data.

You can request all your data collected.

^ Do this and check what they collect.

If you scared of data collection. Just leave the internet. Wherever you go, you data will be collected. Literally any website, any game/program that is online collects your data.

Never said that I was scared of the data collection, just stated that free services are usually collecting data on you and that you should be aware of that. Also while I am not paranoid. I am absolutely sure every phone call and internet connection I have made since I got my security clearance in 1978 has been, and is still monitored and recorded by a specific US Gov entity that was founded in1952.

I love Teamspeak, have even been an evangelist towards it when Discord first came out. But even I must say that Teamspeak has simply just failed to innovate.

Are you in some sort of mafia or a crime lord? Dude, you sound super paranoid. That is not healthy.
I reckon you are big into conspiracies aswell.

The data about your person doesn't do anything. Nobody is out to get you.
