It may seem like a trivial thing, but some do like that control of their character's skill growth from the very start rather than relying on what they find until they get out of the Tutorial questing area (Before skipping is available). If you're unfamiliar with this practice it works by crafting level 1 gear in all 3 types: Light, Medium, and Heavy along with at least 2 weapons, and 3 pieces of jewelry; upgrading it all to at least purple quality, for those of us with a crapton of mats. Then as the character enters the world they use the Banker NPC (alternatively you can mail it to yourself and have that character pick up except the bound items) to withdraw crown food, pots, XP scrolls, and their crafted items. Kill something with each weapon so you have access to the first skill even before weapon swapping is available and equip all the armor of each type to get all 3 skill lines actively showing.

I rarely craft gear for a new character, preferring to rely on training pieces that I find. If I do craft, I only improve to blue.

Nah, I just do that for level 4 - it takes very little time to get to level 4 after skipping the tutorial. Pick up discovery points at Shimmerene, then port to the Inn room in Alinor, hit the bank for crown xp scroll and level 4 gear, pick up the skyshard above the winery, use the xp scroll then wayshrine to Vvardenfell, pick up the skyshard in Seyda Neen, and get the rest of the level with a few more discoveries. I only improve it to green, but yes, I have green of all armor weights so they get all lines; also have all weapon types. I normally only pull out the weapon a given newbie will use though.

Level 16 (the 2nd mat tier) is when I generally start gearing an alt.

Those lower levels go by very fast ...

"First, I would ask that you look to the poor and the suffering around Cyrodiil. Look into their hearts, and then look into your own."

I have light, medium, and heavy sets of level 1 (white) and 4 (green) training gear, and an assortment of weapons (daggers, axes, and staves) that I store and re-use on my new chars so I can immediately ditch the tutorial gear, then I tend to use what I find in-game for awhile.
I'll craft blue training gear for each char, according to class, around lvl20-22, then again in the 30s, if I'm not finding stuff I like for them.

No, I skip the intro to begin at lvl 3 and have training sets starting at lvl 4. I use crafted sets in a 5/4 config and fill in with whatever jewelry I pick up along the way.

I like doing the intro quests to quickly get to level 3 or 4, and just quickly level through quests and some enemies to lvl 10. Then I start making gear for every 10 levels. Just blue quality and blue enchants of the appropriate level. And purple weapons. A little extravagant, but I find having the fancier gear since I mostly solo grind, not ride thru Skyreach a million times,

I tend to craft at lvl 4 then again when fights become a struggle which tends to be twice while leveling. The second time I go into PvP with fresh crafted gear.

I have leveled up an character on a new alt account without sending them any gear at all. I used only what dropped and this was an account without any CP. it becomes what you can handle and what is worth the time. Considering at launch I leveled up my first two characters on my main account the same way, only drop gear , it is very doable.

Edit: the main reason I craft gear when leveling is for the training passive. After more than a dozen characters leveled I could care less about a challenge during those few days it takes to level up a new toon.

    never ever needed to.

I do focus on unlocking as many skills as possible however but initially we are low on skill points.

So its unlock skill get it ready to morph, respec, choose other skills, rinse and repeat.

Always have all three armour classes worn at any time.

I like doing it this way especially with a new class as I can pioke at the new abilities.

I don't bother trying to optimise XP because you level so fast anyway.

depends. some of my alts started out as crafting mules while they are leveling horse speed, so they get to lvl 15ish give or take, without any gear on them other then whatever you get in the tutoral bag. so I throw a green basic set at them and after that - its pretty much whatever they get from quests/dungeons.

otherwise, if I'm too impatient to wait for a horse leveling, I quest from the start and that way its not really necessary to craft at all. drops and quest rewards are more then sufficient.

the only gear I make for low lvl characters is for the the characters going through Maelstrom prior to lvl 10 for those with a heal skill or at lvl 20 for those without a heal skill.

    EDIT:
and only to blue for gear and green for jewelery

New chars go into the tutorial and pick up everything.
Normally come out with all armor and weapon lines open and one of each class skill slotted.

After that, home town to pick up mages, fighters, undaunted, thieves, and dark brotherhood ~ and get certified!

Journal to do the Clockwork City intro for the skill point!

Then off to Gold Coast for my Blade of Woe (opens the Dark Bro skill line), followed by a trip to the docks to do the Thieves Guild intro and will grind out to level 3 via daily board to unlock Clemency passive because this one has sticky paws ;)

After that, have 3 active quests (mages, fighters, main) and am set to go start anywhere I like.

This one rolls too many new characters =8))

I craft white level 1 gear for a new character, and the purpose is simply to open the skill lines. But there is no way I am wasting upgrade mats for this. Also I do get them some money since summerset starts next to a barn and I increase that mount speed to a whopping " 1 ". I pick up some soul gems, and lockpicks as well, but that is about it.

I love crafting gear for little alts, it's so cute when they receive their little Julianos/Hundings <3:blush: Last I leveled alt before Summerset and jewelry crafting, so they got their first purple training crafted set at level 6 + a crafted sharpened purple weapon; they had to use some jewelry which they loot overworld and some random set items to fill empty spaces.

Few days ago I gave up and bought 4 more character slots... :D Jewelry crafting is grindy and I hate grains system, but I love leveling new alts now much more - they can use 2 crafted sets, no more struggle with combining random jewelry drops from dolmens and chests! For 2 alts I used 100% exp bonus during the event, so they got their first crafted gear at level 10. Weapon and armor are purple, jewelry is blue. All enchantments are purple. Then I craft same sets again at 26 level and at 40 level.

For third alt which I've made yesterday, I crafted first gear at level 4 (I used 50% exp scroll when I started the tutorial). I love those little numbers, so cute! Weapon is purple, armor is blue, jewelry is green; all enchantments are purple :D

    vgrHfMc.jpg

All my characters are 50 level crafters working on their daily writs, so all investment in them (gear and bag upgrades) are returned very fast :) Except for last 2 mules, I'm not leveling them higher than 10 level until next 100% bonus exp event... :s

    P.S.

Coldharbour tutorial was much better, but Summerset tutorial is fast and good when you level new characters every day one by one :D I hope Elsweyr tutorial will be as fast

Takes less time then crafting a set.

I actually like leveling a new alt! With 15/15 alts I will often delete a CP160 to start again.

Have level 10/20/30/40 crafted sets, food, potions and jewelry on a mule, so after the Wailing Prison and a starter isle (for the skyshards and using any dropped gear to get the 3 armour skills started), I can equip 5/4 sets and 3 jewels, getting gold and soul gems from the bank. I'll pick up the mages, fighters, undaunted skill lines and get certified. Use four skill points for Hirelings.

On the new alt I'll be around level 10 or 12 and have blue level gear and jewels, and purple weapons. The alt is parked at the stables and left to level riding speed for a few weeks. Using gold the riding capacity is maxed.

Then PvP. Kyne is a great way to level skills. Lots of fun, skyshards, lore books, skill points and AP. I tend to buy siege etc with gold as AP is more useful elsewhere. By the time the alt is level 50 it should have over 20 unused skill points.

Try PvP to level - it's great fun.

The only thing I do is make a L1 weapon of a new character's desired type (bow, staff, etc) and put it in the bank before even creating the new character. Then when the new char starts, I immediately pull the banker out and grab that weapon. Just feels better to have the intended weapon right from the start instead of picking up that 2H sword until finding the right weapon type.

I've had (and to an extent still have) several Shacklebreaker training sets for leveling. Swapping out at a 10 level intervall. + a 4p stam or mag set to fill the other slots except jewels. But it takes a bit of slots to keep them so I decon'd most of it. I mean, you know what you're into anyway, you have done most of the quest so why should I lengthen the grind?

I have stored in a chest in my house purple training gear of level 4, 10, 20, 30 and 40 with weapons and have reused them on all my alts. Wasteful? Not really I have used the gear for 8 chars already and will reuse it on the two necros I will create after patch on Monday. Oh, and btw Jewelry I only use what I pick up did not waste platings to make purple rings and necklaces.
