Yeah, make fun of it mate... It is really funny isn't it?? You talk about the harassment your wife suffer like you care, but make fun of the harassment of others... thats why I don't even report trolls anymore, people just dont care! Most of the NA population is american/canadians, why bother with others...

No, the harassment suffered by my wife i commented as something curious, but i do not care at all, and I know that she does not care either, she only puts them on the ignored list, but they are like flies, there will always be more, it is impossible to finish them.

If it had been in real life the harasser was already in rehab and i in community service after a few hours in jail, is not the first time that happens to me and i assure you it will not be the last.

But this is a stupid videogame, those players who insult behind a monitor are cowards, just seek attention, as soon as you ignore them they leave, they are not worth wasting time with them.

It's like they say in most disclaimers: "Gaming Experience may change online."

but otherwise, if "you" think it violates certain paragraphs in the Terms of Service or the Code of Conduct, then it is up to you to report it, but it is wise to do so within the games report system, or if applicable, to PM ZoS staff describing the information and see if they can provide some assistance.
If you see me anywhere. Know that I am sitting back with a bag of popcorn, watching as ESO burns the goodwill of its player base with practices that only disrespects the players time like it did to me and many others...

I'm weird. I can take people insulting me. It might anger me, and if it's bad enough, I'll just /ignore, but it needs to get pretty bad for that.

But if I see someone being bigoted or abusing towards someone else, I'm all over that report function. I guess maybe I feel like I have an ethical obligation to stand up for others, and since that's the only option i have to do that, I do it.

This word's a special case, but not just because it pushes that "abusive to people other than me" button. In fact, though I'm not gay, when I was a long-haired nerdy kid in the 80s, I got the crap beat out of me by people who were calling me (the full version of) that word. Maybe that flipped a switch in my head, but I find it pretty hard to consider anyone using that word to be a worthwhile person. I certainly don't want to be on a team with them. It's a scummy thing to do, and my time's too valuable to me to spend it hanging out with scum.

So would I report? Probably. Cause you know what? Screw that guy.

What in the hell happened to society that mere words are insulting and offending everyone to the point they have to report it. Either grow a pair and take it, or just block the person who is offending you.
iirc ESO is 18+, init? Are you telling me bunch of adult people cant handle few curse words? Its a part of a life for christ sake. When you are in bar and someone calls you "s*iteating w*nker", are you gonna to report it and demand that person is banned from a bar? no, because as and adutl you take it and you dont give a damn.

You sound awfully offended by other people taking offense. Toughen up buttercup.

So from this day foward, we shall tolarate racism and harassement against women, which have been reported here , because you, clever and superior man said that it is a part of life... no mate, I wont tolarate that... hope you start thinking more of what you are saying here...

Let me clarify for you. I was explicitly talking about mere words offending people. There is a difference between words and racist or sexist behaviour, for example when someone kick you from trial group or dungeon group because you are latino or irish - that is report worthy racist behaviour. When someone kick you from a guild because you are a women - that is unacceptable sexist behaviour. On the other note, when someone takes you into trial group just because you are a women is acceptable sexist behaviour.
There is a difference between actions and words. I would not report someone who is calling me "filthy slav". Whatever, big deal. But if i was to be treated differently because im filthy slav, that would be racist action. You see my point?

Kind of funny, maybe odd, but I don't report players when they insult or ridicule me. I do report when a player is degrading another player. Not sure why that is.

people have bad days his dog maybe died
Thought I would click through a few quick posts while I ate, and it turns out this topic made me stop and think!

First, my honest answer, after reflection: I wouldn't have reported this. It's likely I might not have even noticed as I don't pay too much attention to chat. But I did start thinking about WHY, and as I read through the responses, here are my thoughts...........

I have always shied away from using the report function. I think it is because, for my day job, part of what I do every day is manage staff. I also interact with and manage other managers. To me the worst types of managers are people who make snap judgments and draw conclusions based on one, small, isolated interaction. I HATE THAT. The managers that see someone walk in late, once, and assume they are always late. The managers that see someone make a mistake and constantly repeat in meetings that this particular individual never pays attention to detail. The managers that question a positive review because they can't believe certain individuals made progress, because one time, 20 years ago, that person did a bad job on... whatever.

The report function basically encourages us to point out things that are "wrong" without consequence, without context, and then "mom and dad" (in this case ZOS) can deal with the accusations.

As a manager of people, I form my assessments of my team based on multiple interactions and I don't assume someone is a problem unless I see a repeated pattern of behavior.

Therefore, it goes against my grain to report someone for an isolated incident. Everyone makes mistakes, has moments of bad judgment, or maybe says things that they think are funny that others find offensive. But in addition to that, let's keep in mind:
    • Many people are not native English speakers (or whatever language in which your chat displays)
    • Many people play under the influence of substances where they may not always be themselves
    • Many people are just kids, or have the maturity of a child ;)
    • People may log in and let others try out the game.
    • And yes, people may be having a bad day and using the anonymity of a video game to take it out on others.

So, I would only report someone if I see multiple instances of bad behavior. It bothers me to think I might report someone who normally is fine but my report could lead to a ban that wasn't really warranted.

Also, I believe you should stand by your opinions. Reporting bad behavior, and then not having to own up to your opinion, or be involved in any follow up, feels cowardly to me. This may just be a generational perspective but reporting people in a way where it is anonymous to the person being reported ON just feels like a mechanism that is ripe for weasels, liars, and people who avoid accountability for their actions. I do understand that in real instances of abuse it is imperative that individuals have a safe way to report issues anonymously, but this is a video game, and people just... say sh#$. How many times have I seen "reported" written in chat for the dumbest of reason? More than I can count, let me tell you.

Finally, I agree with everyone who has said that people need to toughen up. The culture today in the workplace is sad. People complain about each other but refuse to handle even the simple step of first talking to the person with whom they have issue and trying to work something out. Everyone is offended by everything. And catering to this mentality is bad for all, because the people we are protecting by validating those "feelings" will become less successful and more isolated as they are unable to cope with any conflict whatsoever. Food for thought: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/09/the-coddling-of-the-american-mind/399356/

Should a repeated behavior of typing offensive, slanderous terms in chat be tolerated? No, of course not. But should we all jump to report isolated incidents of wording that SEEMS offensive to us based on our culture, interpretation, and mood? Personally, I just don't. I understand that an MMO creates an environment where someone might be terrorizing lots of people and each individual might only witness the bad behavior once, but even so, I feel that truly toxic people will end up impacting players multiple times and we can afford to look the other way without multiple experiences to confirm that someone is being offensive. I would want someone to give me the benefit of the doubt, so I do the same.

Regarding the female player comments, I also am a female player who makes female characters. I've been playing MMOs for at least 20 years and I've never received excessive harassment for my characters being female. You never know who's playing on the other side so it's amusing to me when someone assumes I am female. However I will say this: especially with new guilds that I join, I very much avoid speaking in voice chat. THAT is when people really know that you are female, and the immediate questions about if you are single, etc., etc., are obnoxious and inevitable. I often will pretend I don't have a mic because THAT scenario is when I find that the female comments become too much to take.
My #1 wish for ESO Today: Decouple achievements from character progress and tracking.

I'm probably showing my age but I think people need to toughen up a bit and stop being offended at every turn.

I'm probably showing my age, but I remember a time when MMOs were played by mature, adult-behaving people who were generally friendly, and when people insulting others were not tolerated the least. A time when, if you were fighting nearby a ressource node, people would wait for your fight to be over in case you were trying to harvest it. Those were good times, long before that thing called "WoW".

No I don't report. People do have bad days you know.
If it is the same person over and over again I just put him/her on ignore. Easy peasy.
But not for live. I just cleaned my ignore list.
    - (Hate) whispers I love, since I collect them.
    - Tea bagging don't bother me because, well... It's just a game lol.
    - Racism and homophobic slander.. I'm not in EP so don't have problems with it. My wife does though, but she is smart enough to put them on ignore or just use another tab then zone chat.

More that it is the children that are doing the insulting. They are rather sad and probably more pathetic in real life. As someone stated, it is best to ignore them as that type of person generally fumes when they do not get the attention they are seeking when they insult others.

When one really thinks about it one really has to feel sorry for that type of person since they are clearly so desperate for attention that they have to put someone else down to try to make themselves feel like something. Best to just ignore them.

Anyone know how the system actually works?
Like, if I insult someone and I get reported I probably won't be punished. But if I keep doing it and ZOS keeps recieving reports (to which they'd have to go through the chat-logs etc) will I get any kind of punishment then?
Will their punishment escalate to a point where I might recieve a perma-ban?
How is their report-system intended to work?
