I've read that I should steal junk and fence it. That's easy enough. I can steal 220 items in a few minutes. But then I can't fence/launder anymore items for 24 hours.

Is there anything I can do to efficiently power level this skill line, or is it simply time gated?

I think I helped level mine picking chests in Khenarthi’s Roost in between fence cool down. There are tons of chests there and you get XP toward the line picking the chests. Can’t force, though, from what I remember. I just put on music and picked chest after chest.

I’m not sure if it’s the most efficient way, but it’s a way.

Well if i am not midtaken, selling stolen goods also gives points.
So go to sentinel docks in alikr, there its super easy to stel a lot of stuff, and then sell it in a hideout.

Took me about 2 weeks doing the craglon apple orchard on each of my toons. The nice thing about apples is they stack to 200 and the orchard is right beside the hideout. I would generally steal everything in town and finish is the orchard. Took maybe 5-10 minutes a day.

"power level" no. But you can find areas that have an abundance of items you can easily steal. Bring invisibility potions -- use when you get caught. Do your thieving near an area that gives you quick/easy access to a fence (selling items as well as paying your bounty in case the guards want to kill you).

Picking higher level chests/lockboxes and Pickpocketing higher difficulty people awards more Legerdemain rep than the lower tiers of said targets.

Simple chests & Beggars (and all others on same pickpocket tier) award 1 point, while Master chests/lockboxes & guards and nobles (I think?) award 4 points. So you'll get caught more, but it pays to pickpocket guards and fancypants people when your focus is leveling the skill line.

You can see your Legerdemain rep gains with an addon, but alas I forget which one. Might have been Loot Drop, which I no longer use.

So, afaik, the best way to level is to focus on high level targets, fence (and launder!) stuff to the cap available to you daily, and go chest cracking once you've tapped all you can accomplish with the Outlaws for the day.

It takes a while no matter what, but it takes literally four times longer if all you do is focus on low-tier targets. I learned this after leveling Legerdemain on like 5 characters :/

Find an NPC who owns livestock (such as the one near Dragonstar Wayshrine in Craglorn). Kill the NPC, then kill their livestock. Rinse and repeat.

Yes, here's the closest thing you will get to a ledgerdemain power level:

    1. Go to Khenarthi's Roost, on the east side of the island (near that skyshard on the east). There's an area with 30 or so sheep and 2 shepherds (there's also a roving shepherd that shows up occasionally).

    2. Murder the shepherds (if you have Blade of Woe, that prevents you getting a bounty, but it's not critical either way). You can pick-pick-stab if you want to.

    3. Kill all the sheep. Loot all their bodies. Wait for them to respawn, rinse and repeat for about an hour.

    4. Now you have STACKS of stolen guts, hide, and meat. It's not going to make you rich, but you can now easily just stop by a fence once per day and launder up to cap (for like 100 gold, because you're laundering provisioning ingredients or bait) along with selling up to cap, too.

There's a few other sheep to the west of that area with tons of sheep--if you are bored waiting for the respawn, you can go back and forth between the two areas.

The other thing to do is find a decent rotation for stealing that actually makes you gold--I like the houses on the outer perimeter of Rivenspire, personally. Do a rotation, port out, port back, do it again, etc. etc. There's one house in Rivenspire that has 3 locked doors, after killing the owners you can unlock all 3 doors for ledgerdemain XP (and progress on that one housebreaking achievement).

Higher Legerdemain skill allows for better pickpocket chance, reduced sneak cost, and better fencing.

Pickpocketing grants I believe 2 points... so you can hit up slaves/fishermen I think those are real high % even without points in pickpocketing.

But really doesn't take that long just stealing and laundering/fencing... something around 2 weeks total hitting daily limit... I almost want to say 8 days but that seems to short.

Steal from containers and fence till the light fingers passive becomes available, then spec into those and start pickpocketting since it raises the skil much faster. Pickpocketting without passives is horrible so don't do it right from the start.

What I've actually done is training my chars the slow way up till 16+. I allot a few minutes each day, steal everything I find in containers on the Daggerfall docks and the 2 ships anchored there, then fence in the outlaw refuge which is on the peer. The location is quite nice since the containers are unguarded. I do this every day for a few weeks 30-40 items a day. I'm only interested in raising the skill for the sneak cost reduction passive and I don't want to spend on the others.

I do have one char who has all the pickpocketting passives as well as the one from TG line which reduces witness awareness. He's well suited to the role since he's a Khajiit NB with 5 Night Mother's Embrace 5 Night Terror 2 monster pieces all medium for the thieving spec. Just like the others he's fully combat capable PvE & PvP wis3 and crafter but the thieving specialization is extra since it only takes 13 skill points out of a total of 370+

Put one point in the passive that lets you fence/launder more. Go to Orsinium. The palace and a couple of houses have large sections unpatrolled by NPCs. Fill your inventory, and hop over to the conveniently located outlaw's refuge right there. Fence & repeat.

Takes like 2 weeks of max fencing every day, IIRC.

If you are talking about the Five Finger Dance they haven't been pickpocketable since sometime in 2015.

-Edit- Unless something was in an update that accidentally reverted them to the old status.

I'm not talking about that. Has no one else heard about the Gold Farm? Maybe it's only something on Xbox1. I don't want to say too much, but you can get close to 30k in about an hour with your fences, and then you can obviously launder as much as you want which means you can get that skill line maxed out in no time.

Well the problem with Hardan's Caravan NPC slaughter is that you do get a lot of stolen items quick, but you also build up your character bounty to a 6 figures sum that will take months to wear off. By comparison I was able to get 2-3 levels per night just pickpocketting NPCs in Vvardenfell and fencing the loot - back then the Great House motifs fetched good prices, up to 20K a page plus 20K+ worth of bycatch green & blue treasures, for a 5-6K bounty that wore off by the next day.

If you do it correctly, none of your main characters will ever have a bounty. The question was: how to powerlevel your legerdemain. This is by far the fastest way, hands down. It may not be the most fun, or the most rewarding, but it's the fastest way to powerlevel that skill line.

Nothing even comes close to the efficiency of stealing easy things (particularly ingredients from barrels) and then fencing/laundering them.

You can go chest hunting or pickpocketing as people suggest, but in terms of time spent per point gained, they are miles away. So, yes, you can level it without time-gating. But you can't efficiently level it without time-gating. (At least, I wouldn't consider any of the suggestions in this thread to be anywhere close to resembling "efficient" by my standards.)

Just be patient and wait for the daily fence resets. It's not like anyone needs maxed legerdemain anyway.

    um yea

you think hadrans is the only location in the game with a group of npcs that respawn every couple of minutes? lol

also pretty much all the targets in hadrans are classified as easy marks by the legerdemain system which means on average they give the worst possible loot

I go to a quest instanced location with 20+ hard difficulty npcs that perfectly respawn after a loop but you can stick to hadrans with the other novices
