You can delete 2 more at the moment. I presume there is a cap on deletes of 3 to save server issues.

You will regain one more delete each day, so tomorrow will have 3 again.

Correct that their is a cap. Not sure how it is restored.

Zos added it because people where deleting character and asking for them to be restored. It is to protect us form doing dumb stuff to ourselves.

It restores over time. I want to say you get a delete restored every 24 hours. (With a max of 3 deletes, obviously.) But, I've only deleted maybe three characters from the live servers in the last five years.

As for why, unless you know something I don't, the limit was put in place because of goldsellers abusing character delete limits. They'd roll up new characters, run meet and greets, send the gold to a control account, and repeat. So, stuff like the race in Windhelm or The Hollow City's walking tour. Stuff like that was outright shut down by delete limits, and the botting tanked at almost the same time.

So, like I said, unless you've got confirmation that this was because players were being idiots, I'd be much more inclined to believe the goldseller theory.

Correct, @starkerealm, it’s a 24-hour cooldown per each character delete.

For PC players, don’t forget you do have the option of using the three (3) character deletes on PTS, too, when trying to generate a character. Just take screenshots of the character sliders on PTS.

Though, if you’re like me, characters are pretty easy to generate:

Orc - sliders all the way to the right. ;)

Actually this was introduced very soon after release to prevent RMT from endlessly creating characters, doing an initial quest for a bit of gold, deleting the character and doing it all over again.

Definitely not so easy to please. My last character, an altmer female, took around 6/7 tries to get right. The delete cooldown is a pain. Now I'm trying to make a nord character and is going to be the same all over again :(

It seems to be 24 hours from your last deletion, so you're better off not deleting any more until your first deletion slot is restored, at least that's what I think I've observed.

thought it had more to do with bots and then rerolling characters to complete first quest over and over..
Maybe would be better if the limiter only applies when your new character has delivered its first quest. That way those who recreate their character several times to correct some cosmetic aspects of their new chars are never hindered by this limit

It wasn't, technically, the first quest. It was quest in late zones that either didn't have combat, or could ignore the combat. So, the Windhelm race, where you run around the walls, technically doesn't check to make sure you do it as intended. In which case, they'd simply clip through the environment bouncing from NPC to NPC, instead of walking the route and being one shot by hostile NPCs. Another one I remember was the introduction to The Hollow City. This quest doesn't technically, have any prereqs (other than getting there), and you can port to a friend or guildie who's in the hollow city (back then, even if they were in a different alliance, though you'd get dropped into your alliance's version), and then run that quest, which was worth a fair amount of gold for the time commitment in the days before One Tamriel. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that quest also can be zipped through, simply running to each location and ignoring the Groundskeeper's dialog. So, then they'd delete and rerun the quest of their choice, and repeat endlessly.

the delete limit is there so players cant abuse the free 1 day reduction research scroll and 40 transmute stones received at level 50.

The research scroll is character bound. The 50 transmute stones are once per account. (Same with the crown crates, by the way. You only get those once.) The only thing you can, "abuse," is the furnishing choice, and I guess the costume and pet unlocks, but those can be fully collected anyway, even without deleting characters.

Also, the delete limit predates the leveling rewards by four years. So... yeah, that's not the reason.

    @starkerealm is right.

It’s to prevent botters from gold selling.
