This post is total and complete speculation, and is very long, but, based on what ZOS has done for Morrowind, I believe we could be seeing a tease or announcement date very soon. To start off with, I would like to point out the events that took place around the announcement of the Morrowind Chapter.
How was Morrowind Chapter announced?
When the Morrowind Chapter was first teased, it was teased on the 27th of January 2017, at the very end of the first
housing ESO Live stream. The stream had absolutely nothing special in it, except for a small, 5 second clip of the Morrowind volcano background image as a teaser at the very end of the show. Immediately after that small tease, ZOS changed all of their social media pages to the same volcano teaser image, then they posted videos of the volcanic rock slowly opening up each day over the weekend. On
Monday the week after, the volcanic rock had fully opened, showing lava, and they posted the announcement of Morrowind Chapter Announcement live stream on the 30st of January 2017. The day after, on the Tuesday, they had the Twitch event with Pete Hines and Rich Lambert announcing the Morrowind Chapter. There is precedent for Pete Hines to show up when ESO announces major expansions, for example, he was there when One Tamriel launched, and obviously he was there for Morrowind's launch too.
What if Summerset Chapter is delayed to Q3 instead of Q2?
Firstly, we have to consider that the Summerset Chapter is due to come out in Q2, and due to the sheer amount of datamined assets that has been uncovered, it looks like they're ready to pop. I do not think it would make sense for the Chapter to be delayed to Q3, as that will interfere with the next DLC's release schedule. Additionally, (you will have to take my word for this), in the last ESO Live, I believe someone asked in the twitch chat "Chapter announcement when"? To which (I think?) Jessica said "Chapter soon" or something to that effect. This says to me that they are on schedule with the Chapter release in Q2. It also should be mentioned that the next crown crate season is based around the Psijic Order, which is a group that is heavily involved in the story of the next chapter. Since new crown crate seasons are released every quarter, we expect to see this new season come with the Summerset Chapter.
Why do you believe we will get a Summerset announcement in March?
There are two main reasons. I noticed on the german side on the forums, there is a post about a ESO meetup in Frankfurt on Wednesday 21st March. As you can see
here, KaiSchober says (translated):
For reasons that I will explain later, we are scheduled for Wednesday, March 21st.
I'm sorry it has to be midweek. I hope that many can set it up anyway.
Kai is saying that an event that was previously earlier on in the week is now scheduled for midweek instead. This could of course be a random meet up event, and the reason for the delay could be completely innocent, but for reasons I will get into later, I believe this could indeed be related to a Summerset Chapter announcement in that week. As you know, Chapters, from what we've seen with Morrowind, are large expansion-like releases, with new disc box art, and a large hype window in order to get as many pre-orders as possible. Additionally, Morrowind had quite a large PTS window, a month and 11 days to be exact. This brings me onto my second reason:
ZOS have a maximum of around 3.7 months from now to announce, hype, PTS test and finally release this chapter before they miss their Q2 deadline. If they don't announce it soon, they will likely not make it for the Q2 release, which as I said before, I believe is unlikely to happen. Therefore, I believe it is very likely they will announce in March.
Assuming that the PTS cycle for this chapter is the same as Morrowind, and that the early access release date of this chapter will be mid June, that gives ZOS 1.8 months from now to announce and hype up the Summerset chapter before the PTS release starts, this seems like a decent amount if we take into consideration that Morrowind was hyped extremely early for nostalgia reasons, as well as the fact it was ESO's first chapter.
For reference, Morrowind had 3 months worth of hype before the
eventual PTS closed beta announcement. Obviously, ZOS has wanted to give the Dragon Bones DLC its own breathing room in order to maximise profits, it would not make sense to announce a new chapter at the same time as hyping up a new dungeon DLC. If the week of March 21st is indeed the announcement date, then that would mean that the chapter is announced three weeks after the console release of Dragon Bones, which is fairly respectable if you ask me. There is a large enough gap between the console release of Dragon Bones and the supposed announcement of the Summerset Chapter that most console users will have played and or/bought the dungeon pack already.
How do you think Summerset Chapter will be announced?
I believe on next week's ESO live episode (3 days before announcing the livestream, if they follow the Morrowind formula), they will have a Summerset teaser at the very end of the episode. They will then likely swap all of their social media to an image based on that teaser, and will slowly begin hyping the chapter up until they announce the livestream on the Monday the following week. Then sometime during that week, they will show the summerset reveal livestream, and the event in Frankfurt will probably have the first details on Summerset, perhaps a playable demo depending on if the announcement livestream comes before or after it.
Am I on the right track or do you think they'll wait longer to announce? It'd sure be funny and also disappointing if all of this turns out to be incorrect and they don't announce anything lol.
