I've only tried to play in Cyrodiil one time on one of my characters and I was really, really bad at it. I don't think I even got any damage done before I got killed. For me, it was a disaster. I never even got to finish my scouting mission. I am a member of only one guild, so it's not like I've got a lot of options for help there either. I'm afraid I'll get in there and not only a group will kick me, but my whole alliance will be embarrassed by my horrible performance and will try to give me away to the other alliances.

I'm not complaining. PVP players deserve love just as much as PVE players. I just want to participate, get some of the event goodies and not look like a fool while doing it. If anyone has any useful suggestions for me, I'd love to know what they are!

...sneak a lot until you find a warband of friendlies, then just wordlessly run after them? If you are a social awkward person anyhow.

If not... just ask for a group invite in zone chat, join the action, contribute as you can. Even if its just minor stuff from the sidelines, the good point about ESO PvP is that you can beat quality with quantity if enough of yours mass against them.

Ranged builds have an advantage there, by being able to do damage before the others come close enough to take them down... especially when defending castles!

Also, food buffs are a good idea when PvPing! You don't need the purple three-stat food, the much, much easier to make blue one that just boosts health and your attack stat is good enough.

And don't fear the respawn. it happens, a LOT when you are not that good at PvP. Just respawn and charge right back into the ffray, do what you can, get in the enmies way, heal or harm as you are able. You won't make gains like the super-duper playerkillers, but slowly and steadily you will have some successes...

It took me ages to enjoy PVP. I'm not great by any stretch of the imagination, as I just don't have the reflexes (or whatever) to blast off my entire skill rotation within 4 nanoseconds. That said, I do enjoy a bit a PVP now and again - here's what changed:-

    1. I fell in with a guild which has a fair amount of PVP action. These guys are in it for fun, and they have a great time. I met them as a LFG beginner, and they asked in anyone wanted to join at the end of the night. They changed my view of PVPers - they are not all gaming "elites".

    2. By playing a bit more, I got better at it. Better at understanding what skills work well in PVE, but are useless in PVP, etc. I'm still somewhere smack in the middle - I'm not great, but I'm good enough that I can have a little fun on my own now and again.

So, my advice is to dive in, look for a guild for regular support, be honest about your noobness (you'll be surprised at how many people feel the same way), and don't let death put you off. Oh, and always - ALWAYS - stick to the Crown!

pvp has it's issues, but it's fun if you don't take it too seriously (try really hard to not do that) so jump in and enjoy,it's at worst a change from the repetitive pve solo stuff :)

I was so scared of Cyrodiil for the longest time. The first couple of times I went in, I ran the heck back out, lol. When I went back after hitting CP 250ish with my main, I was still scared, but determined to give it a good try and I'm getting better and better. I'm at CP 456 now and still do die a lot, but not too long ago I took on a DC CP 530+ player alone at a resource and won! I was so proud of myself! I just do my best to tank when I can and revive players as we go. I have a hard time staying out of Cyrodiil now and have to force myself to go out into the world to gather resources for myself and my main guild and do some writs from time to time. I was actually going to make myself stay out for the next week so I could gather a whole bunch of stuff, but that'll have to wait now, lol.

Also, the very first time I went to do a delve there, I literally went in (can't remember which one, but somewhere in EP territory I think) and was immediately killed by a couple of DC guys. Then, a couple days later, I went into Pothole cavern and worked with someone from EP to take care of the bosses. We would accidently hit each other a few times, but not to kill. It was so much fun!!

Don't worry about being bad, firstly PvP is very different from PvE so it's totally normal to get super lost and insta die at first(not to mention there're builds that can one shot almost anyone, even a seasoned veteran for the most part). Secondly no matter how bad you are, there will ALWAYS be people worse than you, just trust me on that x_x

If you want ap, it will be easy enough to gain - like others have said, you lfg, stick to crown and follow commands. Healing for example is a very easy way to make ap, and it's always in demand, but keep in mind healers get focused a lot. If you want to properly get into it, see if you have any friends or guildies who could explain the basics, or hell even asking in zchat (or on forums :p ) sometimes works.

Tbh I'm not very good at PvP, especially lately, but one most important thing I can tell you - when you go in PvP lands, you will die. A lot. Sometimes back to back. Sometimes without doing anything useful in between dying. And that's okay. Everyone, even Grand Overlords and the people who are reverred as best PvPers of the server, die a lot. Difference is they kill (more) people before that(assuming non-potato GOs for the sake of the argument here) - but that'll get better with practice for you. Your armor doesn't degrade, your gear/gold cannot be taken(tel var can but only in IC), there's no punishment for dying so res, run in and keep trying til you get the hang of it ;)

You think everyone in Cyrodiil is a pro? Run with a large group with other casual players, don't wander off alone, and you'll be fine. You will die, probably, but everyone does, so no shame.

Just think of enemy players that they are buggy world bosses, but with bad AI and unpredictable behavior. At least you don't have repair costs when you die.

I guess this thread has already taught you one thing about PVP..: The PVP community aren't the demons and trolls that they seem to get painted as

A lot of good advice here so far - here's a but more...

    AP/Siege
Buy siege and wood/stone repair kits as soon as you can. There is a starter quest in PVP which teaches you how to use siege and rewards a bit of AP - so worth doing that first.
Since you're new to it and so probably going to be worse at combat than most, I'd suggest trying the no-cp campaign and using a lot of siege (its more effective against players there).
There are siege merchants in your starting keeps (where it ports you when you join cyrodil) - and some repeatable quests that grant AP too (kill x nightblades etc..). These are worth getting. There is also a siege merchant inside the keep of every castle and at every resource node. So stock up quick when you start to earn.

    On Grouping..
Ask for a group - as a new PVPer you WILL be more successful in a group and you will benefit from the AP that the group as a whole earns. You also will be using the leaders experience to give guidence, decide where to go etc. You generally get three types of groups in cyro..
    1. The guild-only group. You will not get invited to these. They vary in skill/ability etc. The best will be seen moving in a tight ball, have builds which compliment the group rather than the individual, are using voice comms and are very well-practiced at moving together, co-ordinating ultimites/keeping each other alive etc.. The more casual will still probably be using voice comms but won't be as practiced and won't have group-focussed builds.
    2. The small-man. Usually 2-4 friends who have played a lot together, have complimentary builds, TS, often found in resource nodes running In circles around objects.
    3. The pick-up group. This is the group who will invite anyone who's looking at the time. This is the group you will get into. The pug will get defeated by the guild groups in most engagements, and will also struggle to defeat the small groups too (even if outnumbering them 3 to 1) But its usually part of the zerg and is capable of starting a siege.

Now if you do spam LFG in /zone, you will either get snapped up or not. Its simple. In PVP pugs, nobody cares which build you run, what your CP is, how many kills you get, how effective you are, etc. Its just about numbers. The leaders are generally trying to get a full group of 24. SO if you don't find a group - it will not be a reflection on your ability/experience.
When in a group, all you need to do is watch chat, take directions and follow the leader(crown). The only reason you're really gonna get kicked from a pug is for being offline or constantly being in a totally different place to the rest of the group(leader).
Also stealth when the leader stealth's (usually on approaching an enemy keep)

If you don't get a group - don't worry, its just because there isn't one running with spaces at that time (or the leader was too busy to notice your LFG in chat at that time - which is why asking every few minutes is useful)

In the meantime, if you don't get a group - you can still play. Learn to understand the map - see where the conflicts are (crossed swords) or keeps are under attack (have a yellow glow behind them) - and go there. You will generally see plenty of other people going there too. When you get there, there will often be a large amount of friendlies in combat - stick with them. You don't have to be in a group to play alongside others. You benefit from each others heals/buffs etc. grouped or not. You can help kill the same targets grouped or not. You can join in with a pre-existing siege etc.
This is called zerg-surfing. There are probably more people doing just this than there are in groups at any one time in cyro.

    On Dying
Rule number 1. Don't get salty. You will die - a lot. Its what PVP is. I've seen some PVEers get really upset when someone kills them in Cyro or IC.. and take it as some kind of trolling/hatred directed against them etc.. It isn't, its just PVPers Pvping in a PVP zone.. I honestly think this is one of the main reasons people think PVPers are toxic etc.... I suspect if you do see this kind of rage in chat - its probably PVE-ers who are only there for the event and havn't learned this yet.

So dying.. When you dye, people will generally resurrect you if its safe for them to do so (even if not grouped with them) - so don't release straight away - wait a bit and watch the flow of the combat to see if it will likely be safe for them soon or not.
If you rush into the middle of a ton of enemies/siege, die, get resurrected, and then just do the same thing again, people will notice and will stop risking themselves/wasting their stones on rezzng you. So back off behind friendlies after a rezz, and be a bit more careful.
If you don't get a rezz, there may be a camp nearby. you can rezz there - but they are only temporary, and you can only use them once every 2 minutes? so its better to get a player rezz if possible.
Failing that, you can ressurect at any keep (or village) your faction owns - usually the closest keep and then a run back to the action on your trusty mount. Speaking of which, Cyro is big. Build up your mount speed as much as possible.
Use your dead time usefully, stock up on more siege/repair kits, turn in quests etc, before porting back. Learn how to get around.

    Getting around Cyro
There is a 'transitus system' which is quite simple. The map shows lines between keeps you own, which are not under attack and control at least one resource. You can use this to instantly teleport from one keep to another. Each keep has a kind of glowing pedestal surrounded by npc casters which you can use to port.
If a keep in the network goes under siege, and its walls drop to below 50%, it will be 'on fire' (ie it has a firey icon behind it on the map) You will not longer be able to port to (or from) it. Also it may cut off other keeps that it links, removing the ability to port to them. You will also not be able to resurrect there either. But these 'flaming' keeps are the ones that need defending. Most people, when this happens, port to the nearest safe keep, then ride there.
Each keep has 3 resource nodes (farm/mine/lumber) If all 3 for a keep are capture, you cannot port. (but can still rezz)
Horseback - when travelling, there is a skill in the assault line usually called 'rapids' - it gives a 30% speed buff to you which also works while mounted. It is also one of the few skills that affects your nearby group members (where most skills affect anyone nearby, grouped or not). IF in a group, you will probably benefit from this.
Galloping makes it even quicker. your horse will run out of stam quick, but as long as you keep galloping, it won't stop (if you do stop, you need to recover some of that horsey stam before you can gallop again. Now this is important, Horse stamina is a measure of how much damage you can take before getting knocked off you horse.. This means that if somebody light-attacks you while you are sprinting with no horse-stam, you will be knocked off. Getting knocked off stuns you for a good few seconds - and gives no CC immunity - allowing you to be stunned again straight after.
Basically, getting attacked while on horseback is usually a death sentence - so dismount BEFORE you get to the fight.

Most importantly - Don't get annoyed, Persevere and Have Fun

    Minalan owes me a beer.

Oh, one more thing: If you siege make sure you use Stone Trebuchets and a) hit the same wall as everyone else and b) don't hit doors unless it's a main gate (the small doors are immune to siege damage, the main gates are the big gates at the front of the keep and at the front of the inner keep).

Then you're already doing it better than many others in Cyrodiil...

    repairing siege and forward camps

^This. I usually carry around a stack of siege repair kits for one simple reason: it is much easier and cheaper than carrying around six different siege weapons. Repair kits stack; siege weapons don't, and the really expensive (but useful) ones like rams and forward camps will probably be out of your reach starting out any way. Repair kits let you contribute to keeping the useful siege up, and they don't cost AP. Added bonus: you can repair YOUR OWN siege, so when you do start carrying around a few catapults and fire ballistas, you don't need as many.

Maybe following a big croud round might not be the best way to show off your indiviudual skills but it should get you the achievements and you never know, you might even have fun while your doing it :D

You can totally suck in PVP and still easily get a million ap per week or so. Believe me, I'm an expert at sucking in PVP ^^.

I you have a bad experience, though, I would try below lv50 campaign. It's much more forgiving for new players.

And expect to die a lot. There is no easy way around it (unless you're going full tank, no damage, but that's plain boring). Death in Cyrodiil has no penalty (other than being unable to play till ressurected or waiting through loading screens and riding back to the warzone :D ).

    Did I mention you'll die a lot?

BTW. Count your kills and deaths. Once you realize you kill much more than die, it will make everything so much more enjoyable. You only need to have one more kill than death to be above average... Well, unless you're killing one and the same guy and being killed by everyone else...

PvP can be tough and very confusing to people new to it, due to how different it is from the rest of the game. If you are interested in doing it though then you really just gotta keep going back inside and taking things one step at a time. It also really does help if you have a guildmate or two that can help you and answer questions.

Personally, I stepped into PvP with my first char a long time ago, and I just got confused and almost decided to give up on it. I gave it some more time in the following days though and I've loved it ever since.
