CASH SHOP. It is never going to go away, and it will always dictate game mechanics like this. Crafting furniture is supposed to be ridiculous else no one would buy it with real money.

THANK YOU! Reading this thread was starting to make me depressed. It's embarrassing that I had to scroll down this far before I finally saw a post from someone who gets it.

I'll put this in bold letters for all of you who don't get it:

ZOS MAKES MONEY WHEN YOU BUY FURNISHED HOMES AND FURNISHINGS FROM THE CROWN STORE. THEY DON'T WANT YOU CRAFTING FURNISHINGS YOURSELF.

Jeez, this isn't rocket science, people.

I think players would be more likely to quit in frustration than they would shell out $200 in the crown store to furnish their house.

So far I've found 3 recipes, 2 I could learn and 1 I had to put in my bank to save for when my crafting levels are high enough. I also found 3 decorative wax. Not too bad. If I can gather the materials, I'll be able to make a pot and a chair.

I would assume that the guild stores will start selling items as soon as people learn designs and start making items to sell. Or are you saying you can only furnish a house with stuff you make yourself? I thought the items were tradeable?

I think most people have needed to go to other crafters to get armor made in the trait/style they wanted. Is this any different?

    @OldGamerESO
I am saying this as a master crafter myself, though. Before the patch dropped I had 100% motifs learned, all provisioning recipes except the 3 million gold XP pot, and all traits researched. So obviously I don't mind a grind like the blueprint acquisition. I know I can just buy them over time and eventually get stuff. It is that mixed with the rarity of the furniture-crafting materials that gets my hosiery bunched. Even CP160 gear isn't this bad. For gear, materials are plentiful and you only need to make a few pieces at the end of the day. For furniture, though, the materials are incredibly scarce and you need to craft 700 items to fully furnish a top-tier house. That's really not cool!!

Playing devil's advocate for a second. (1) How long has this patch been out and people sound like they want their entire home decorated already? (2) ZoS probably was thinking those who don't pay cash shop moneys will WORK for it. (3) Wont it be more impressive an accomplishment if it is harder earned?

    K, done with devil mode.

I have questions. Can I buy furniture from the cash shop and sell it on guild trader? If so, will what is in cash shop be limited time only with replacement new stuffs in future cash shop updates?

It's a matter of scale. Currently you can farm for hours and only manage enough material to make a couple pieces of furniture. A couple out of up to 700 furniture slots, and that's only in a single home. Nobody minds working for it (well, probably nobody, anyway) but when I can make more pieces of Cp 160 gear from farming than I can furniture objects we have a freaking problem.

Things will definately get better in a month or so when there are enough mats and recipes and people with recipies out there in the world.
And guild traders aren't charging more than my house for these things.

It is a little frustrating right now, but I am patient, the crown store is right there for those that are impatient and many of the complainers are ESO+ subs you have crowns lying around to buy it.

There are some small improvements they can easily do next week.
    Hirelings giving you mats
Straight up higher chance for mats, I need it to be more 1/3, 1/4 instead of 1/10 it is now.
The system is like provisioning, but it isn't set up like provisioning. You need the mats to be extremely common and recipies uncommon but given to you free such as in writ rewards.
I understand people want to furnish in a single style but I think exploring and searching for patterns is part of the fun, but you really need to remove one of the grinds basically, and the mat grind is the one I would remove.
Finally the vendors need to supply you with more basic housing things, I unstand you can't craft trees which is why they provide you with those but we need to be able to furnish in a basic way off the bat.

Right now its basically ikea but instead of them selling you a box...oh... we need Ikea. ESO Ikea please. Give us a container with the mats plans and have us construct it ourselves.

The patch came out yesterday. Since then I've done a variety of things in-game and out.

My characters have found (and my main has learned) 4 Blacksmithing Diagrams, 7 Clothier Patterns, 12 Woodworking Blueprints, 6 Provisioning Furnishings, and 1 Enchanting Praxis. My crafting bag contains: 35 alchemical resin, 3 clean pelts, 20 bast, 92 decorative wax, 44 heartwood, 48 mundane runes, and 54 regulus. I also found a painting in a random treasure chest. The schematics aren't the ones I would have chosen, but if I've gotten this many in a day and a half, I'm pretty sure others will come along in due course. The mat drop rates don't seem to me terrible either, given that there's a chance that every time you harvest a regular crafting mat, there's a chance of getting a furnishing mat. Every time an alt we're leveling picks a flower there's a chance of resin. If they were much more common, they'd soon have no value.

Regular crafting mats are extremely abundant but they still sell for fat stacks. The furniture materials could be exactly as common as the armor and weapon materials and they'd still end up being worth more due to how many you need, so I must disagree completely.

To make a costume you have to buy 2x2 meters of cloth and 5 buttons.
To make a window curtain you have to buy 2x3 meters of cloth, 5-10 rings and a 1 stick.

To make a sword you need 2-3 kilos of metal.
To make a chair with metal legs you need 5 kilos of metal, 2-3 boards and 10-20 nails.

Clothes, proffesional tools (swords, staves in ESO), boots, all that things people buy every season. And people buy furniture once a year or even once a decade.
So, why do you think furniture crafting should be easy breezy?

My strategy right now is to spend all my time farming mats. This gives me gold as well as mats that I need to actually craft the furniture. Then I buy the blueprints or actual furnishing items from guild traders.

Farming blueprints is too unreliable. You have a 20% chance of getting a blueprint from a drawer or desk, and then you only have a 1/1100 chance of getting the one you need (and even that of course is affected by rarity level, so the chances of getting a purple blueprint are somewhere in the ballpark of 0.000001%).

This is holding back what should a fun and engaging system.

I love crafting and farming mats in the wild, but this is far too much. Hours needed to furnish my planned medium home are far beyond my reach. Three days of excessive farming, and I have two plates, two channelabras, a pumpkin, nice table and bulky washbasin crafted.

Fun and engaging is what I hoped, considering I easily find crafting both fun and engaging. Now I'm exhausted already.

Is someone forces you to do all that things? Is it nessesary to furnish your home ASAP?
Homestead is just a side activity. And as every other activities it shouldn't be completed in a week from the start.
I'm really frustrated of all that whining about time-consuming furnishing. What did you expect? All rare furnish in your house after one week? Are you serious?

I agree entirely. Housing is a huge disappointment for me so far. The grind seems to be ridiculous and I won't be able to afford all the things I want even in 2 years. To the things you mentioned OP (which make housing completely unenjoyable) I would like to add two more flaws of the housing system which discourage me and make the housing experience even less fun:

    1) I would like to have greater influence on what recipes I can get. Let's say I would like to decorate my house in an Altmer style, so the most reasonable thing would be to go to Auridon to loot all the containers there. But now? I need to count on a huge luck that one of the recipes will be actually the Altmer style item. And since there are so many recipes in the game I am 100% sure that I will never decorate my house entirely in a way I would like to. Some recipes should drop in certain places, connected to their style/feature/quality etc.

    2) No preview options for items that can be purchased from merchants. The lack of this feature I just don't understand. How am I supposed to assess if an item is worth its price and would fit my house and taste only by its name and a little icon?

Unfortunately I don't think we can count on any changes to this system. It was clearly designed to push players towards the crown store...

Because they sell furnishment at Crown store, the greed demands that furnishing crafting needs to be as hard as it can be so they sell stuff.

See what all sorts of crap it implements to game when its not subscriptions based.

Which would be fine, except there's nothing else to DO in this update. If we had a new zone to explore, or a new set of quests to complete while we're looting every crate and barrel in sight, it wouldn't be so bad; it would be a nice little diversion while we were rescuing the townsfolk or killing bandits or what-have-you.

Right now our options for new content consist of looting in circles. Yay.

Believe me, even with such a little control over what you can get, you are still a victim of grind and huge RNG since the number of recipes seems to be endless and the drop rate of those is really really low. Trading system would not suffer from this at all. It would be like farming overland sets: many people farm them in particular places where they drop, but others just buy them straight from the stores.
