CASH SHOP. It is never going to go away, and it will always dictate game mechanics like this. Crafting furniture is supposed to be ridiculous else no one would buy it with real money.
THANK YOU! Reading this thread was starting to make me depressed. It's embarrassing that I had to scroll down this far before I finally saw a post from someone who gets it.
I'll put this in bold letters for all of you who don't get it:
ZOS MAKES MONEY WHEN YOU BUY FURNISHED HOMES AND FURNISHINGS FROM THE CROWN STORE. THEY DON'T WANT YOU CRAFTING FURNISHINGS YOURSELF.
Jeez, this isn't rocket science, people.

Other ideas to help fix the problem :
- Give furniture materials from refining
- Give furniture materials from hireling mails
- Make furniture materials purchasable from various vendors, like for Alliance Points, Tel Var, etc.

I think most people have needed to go to other crafters to get armor made in the trait/style they wanted. Is this any different?

K, done with devil mode.
I have questions. Can I buy furniture from the cash shop and sell it on guild trader? If so, will what is in cash shop be limited time only with replacement new stuffs in future cash shop updates?
The patch came out yesterday. Since then I've done a variety of things in-game and out.
My characters have found (and my main has learned) 4 Blacksmithing Diagrams, 7 Clothier Patterns, 12 Woodworking Blueprints, 6 Provisioning Furnishings, and 1 Enchanting Praxis. My crafting bag contains: 35 alchemical resin, 3 clean pelts, 20 bast, 92 decorative wax, 44 heartwood, 48 mundane runes, and 54 regulus. I also found a painting in a random treasure chest. The schematics aren't the ones I would have chosen, but if I've gotten this many in a day and a half, I'm pretty sure others will come along in due course. The mat drop rates don't seem to me terrible either, given that there's a chance that every time you harvest a regular crafting mat, there's a chance of getting a furnishing mat. Every time an alt we're leveling picks a flower there's a chance of resin. If they were much more common, they'd soon have no value.

@Imryll
Regular crafting mats are extremely abundant but they still sell for fat stacks. The furniture materials could be exactly as common as the armor and weapon materials and they'd still end up being worth more due to how many you need, so I must disagree completely.
This is holding back what should a fun and engaging system.

I love crafting and farming mats in the wild, but this is far too much. Hours needed to furnish my planned medium home are far beyond my reach. Three days of excessive farming, and I have two plates, two channelabras, a pumpkin, nice table and bulky washbasin crafted.
Fun and engaging is what I hoped, considering I easily find crafting both fun and engaging. Now I'm exhausted already.
You know, there is a traiding system in the game. Try to find Aldmer style schemes and furniture there, just like you search for Aldmer style motifs in example.1) I would like to have greater influence on what recipes I can get. Let's say I would like to decorate my house in an Altmer style, so the most reasonable thing would be to go to Auridon to loot all the containers there. But now? I need to count on a huge luck that one of the recipes will be actually the Altmer style item. And since there are so many recipes in the game I am 100% sure that I will never decorate my house entirely in a way I would like to. Some recipes should drop in certain places, connected to their style/feature/quality etc.
Agree.2) No preview options for items that can be purchased from merchants. The lack of this feature I just don't understand. How am I supposed to assess if an item is worth its price and would fit my house and taste only by its name and a little icon?

Is someone forces you to do all that things? Is it nessesary to furnish your home ASAP?
Homestead is just a side activity. And as every other activities it shouldn't be completed in a week from the start.

Since there are countless recipes out there I would like to farm these with more control over what I can get. I don't want to be limited only to guild traders.

All of us don't want to. But traiding is a huge part of the game, and if everybody able to farm exactly what they want, then people will trade nothing but some useless things, imho.

I've been stealing in Orsinium for like 2 hours and found over 100 of them.
@IronCrystal are you getting them by stealing from containers that have food or food that's sitting out in the open? The first 2 Wax I found yesterday was from 2 bananas sitting in an open crate.
I know at least some came from food containers, but I know they didn't all come from them. I steal from a house in orsinium that has lots of backpacks/urns/dressers/barrels/food containers. Some came from there yes, but definitely not all of them.
