Latency and mitigation

Last night I was doing veteran hard mode pledges on my magicka sorc dps and templar healer. In Banished Cells on the final boss, my sorc kept getting one shot, while my healer did not.

Mitigation aside for a second, I know we're meant to block the magic bolt from High Kinord Rilis. But I couldn't manage to block reliably at 30 metres. I think much of this has to do with a 300ms ping. From everything I've ever observed, this gives me half a second less to respond to something than another player with a ping of 50ms. So for a spell such as this magic bolt that doesn't have a long animation / cast time, what exactly is the southern hemisphere to do?

On mitigation, some of these hits on my sorc were 19.7k while in lightning form, and 18.4k without lightning form. As lightning form gives me an additional 5k spell resist, what the heck is going on there? As a sorc with a HP pool of 17.5k, I'm also very aware of the need for mitigation. With all my warrior CPs in elemental defender, thick skinned and hardy, I really don't expect to be oneshot by regular somewhat unavoidable mechanics. Conversely, my templar rarely gets oneshot and did not last night. The largest hit was 18k, same CPs, all light armor, and a few K less spell resist. Although I do run it with 20.5k HP just to be sure.

Thoughts?

Kinda hard to do with an ocean between me and North America. Perhaps you missed the reference to the southern hemisphere?

there is no reference to the southern hemisphere in your post. if you have it in a sig (like mine) i can't see it.

Easiest way is you're going to block it, cast a damage shield when you see the animation. If you don't have one, dodgeroll when you see the animation. At range the animation is a lot easier to see than close up.

I made a post about this earlier. Basicly 300 ping or 80 ping what i havrle doesnt matter with this boss. Ive found ways to avoid death on rilis but i have to change my hp for him from 18k to 20k. Ive found that roll dodge wont fire off in time on this guy most of the time. https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/307839/banished-cells-1-last-boss#latest

Yeah I was dying to him too... very embarrassing lol

I'd get knocked back and by the time I'd hit the ground I'd be in a circle of blue flame.

    Good night.

I'm play from Japan on PS4 btw... I was hopeful of a Japanese server a while back but it seems pops are diminishing so low these days that it'll probably never happen.

I used to run my healer with healthy willpower rings last meta so I could survive those one shot mechanics that other players can react to. That could help a little.

These days I've done everything so many times so I just anticipate mechanics.

That random double hit from the high king with no tell is the only one I've ever had a problem with though.

Luckily my mates were kind enough to pick me up quickly <3

My oceanic guildmates keep damage shields up at all times to try to combat the ping. It makes the mechanics a little more forgiving.

I got a constant 200 ish Ping playing on the NA server from Sweden. And I don't think that its that big of a deal, maybe 300 is a tipping point but I'm not so sure. I have seen Australians with that amount of ping dodge attacks left and right and have no problems surviving would be one shots.

On the mitigation part however, did you check to see if you had other buffs that were in effect at the time of your Damage Check? Cause that will always make a difference.

Thank you for the link, I did have a read through.

I might just avoid Banished Cells Veteran for now, nothing else really one-shots me.

    Thanks

I was speaking to someone else tonight in game who was doing exactly this, on that one specific boss.

Something I'll definitely do in future.

So cute see people not being able to play with just 300ms... ^_^

Rilis is so annoying especially since he's the final boss of one of the 3 easiest vet dungeons in the game. Train and slot a damage shield just for him. I play with 100ms ping (from Canada, eh?) and even then he's still a Pita. I rather lose a small bit of DPS refreshing my shield than lose a lot of DPS taking dirt naps.

Another question is this thou, how much HP do you have? I see people take direct hits from him all the time without the use of damage shields.

My sorc wears 5/1/1 Light / Medium / Heavy, 17.5k HP.

My healer wears 7 Light, but 4 prismatic enchants + a couple of attribute points, 20k

Interestingly, I did this fight again last night on my Nightblade. She's in 5 medium, but took those magic spells without a problem. The medium armour made a big difference.

I've been having issues like this also.

I was doing tempest island the other day and sometimes her rush move would go right through my block. Other times it would not. For the same reason I'm guessing that sometimes when I hit my heal or ward nothing happens.

I don't know what has happened to this game lately - but it now has unpredictable bouts of unresponsiveness which can really mess you up on a difficult fight. Not to mention it's just annoying as heck.

All that being said, I wouldn't feel safe on a lot of boss fights without at least 20k HP. I watch DPS get instant killed on a regular basis (even the good ones) because they don't have enough HP. But considering some of the more brutal DPS-race mechanics on this game I can't really blame them for neglecting their health.

Exactly this. The amount of actions / spells etc that just never translate into a character reaction is astounding. It never used to be like this. I wonder if this relates to data centre works that happened a little while ago? It's certainly been more prevalent in recent weeks too.

Also, I was doing CoH2 last night, and kept experiencing the same hiccups on Mezeluth. Randomly myself and others had rolled out, dodged anything red, held block, but still somehow get hit by some mystery AOE and killed. It's so entirely buggy. This was in normal mode too. I should record a video of these broken mechanics, not that I expect it to do any good :(.

It's just, you know, if the technology can't support the mechanics 100% of the time, well obviously something needs to change.

That was something I really reflected on last night. I think it's these unreliable player actions with the sheer unforgiving nature of mechanics that is demanding a tonne of DPS. In my case, I definitely felt pressured to push for more DPS while trying to preempt some of the more dangerous threats to mitigate being made of glass. I think this is also ingrained in the minds of many of experienced players.

In all honesty, I would much prefer an environment where any player could reliably follow mechanics on any reasonable internet connection, without having to focus on doing a tonne of DPS.
