A bit more friendly if it says "removed" from guild instead of "kicked"

I help running an end game guild, and sometimes we have to make the unpleasant decision to remove players from the guild. It doesn't need to be bad feelings or anything. When you right click on a player, you get the option to "remove" him from guild, but on the guild history, the word "kicked" are used. I feel this looks more negative then the situation is, and some players can get uncomfortable when they see this. Just a small detail of a thought I had :)

    Yeah. Same thing for groups.

I'm just removing folks who are offline. I feel like I'm being rude if I'm "kicking" them.

    I agree!

If you go by the implications of the word, I have only kicked two people from the guild (racial slurs and other hateful language are not welcome here), but have removed quite a few (mostly inactivity).

If I am cleaning up the roster to remove inactives, I usually get at least one question about why I kicked a bunch of people. I now make sure to add a note to the MotD, but a change to language from Kicked to Removed would be very welcome!

I'm obligated to agree that it's a good idea given my current employment, however personally I think that anyone who can't accept the use of the term "kicked" when it refers to others and themselves probably isn't the most mature/stable/stoic/accepting person to have in a guild.

A kinder and more gentlier ESO.. I guess we could use a bit more of it, given there are so many bashing, thrash talking and toxic behaviors/conducts going on. Giving the boot or don't let the door hit you on your way out won't be on the vote, then.

It's a matter of unnecessary shaming through thoughtless wording.

And if folks running guilds are bothered by this that's all that need be said.

An aside, Zenimax held a guild leader summit during the first year of the game. Have they held one since? Seemed like a good idea.

Seriously, oh my gosh I hurt your feelings. So what, it's just a game. If you got kicked you did something that was against the guilds policy. It's the same thing we u get fired from a company, should we change that to; because it hurt someone's feelings.

Not everyone take things the same way. Its also common to fire people in a nice way, just as its possible to "remove" people from a guild in a nice way :)

I think that's exactly the point. The word "kicked" has a specific meaning along the same lines as "fired." You did something wrong, ergo you got kicked.

But people being removed from guilds isn't always about that. Sometimes, it's just a case of the guild reaching near capacity, and so the guild leaders trim out the people who haven't been on in 4+ months, since they're assumed to be inactive.

The word "kicked" has specific connotations. I'd have to say that "removed" is just more pleasant for everyone all around. No harm in that. :)

Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."

Agreed. And there is another issue. Other members in the guild see a message saying "@randomguildie left SoAndSo Guild" when actually they were kicked. To me this is a way bigger deal than the way they worded a member being removed. For obvious reasons.

I guarantee the people voting on " removing " someone from the party will not be using the word " remove " when discussing it...you can bet your last dollar the words banded around will be KICK THE USELESS G*T

.if it flashes up on screen X was removed from the party...do you honestly think that it will make the KICKED player feel any better?

I say leave it as is.

It accurately describes what is going on. Someone broke a rule, caused a disruption, or did something else contrary to good sense. The word for removing someone in any of those situation is kicked.

Is it negative? That's a matter of opinion. I could say 'has been removed' is offensive to me, and I could make an argument that removing a part from the whole has a spiritual context. So does that mean we have to find something else? Maybe that's offensive to someone else too?

No.. the word has no bearing on real world ethics or sensibilities and has been used in MMORPGs for at least 17 years. Let it stay. Its a word used like Mob instead of mobile object, agro to determine how much attention a mob gives a player, and raid to describe a group of groups. Its part of MMORPG culture.

    This thread has triggered me.

The word kick is completely unacceptable, as is removed. I believe that we should change this to "hugged out of guild by way of unicorn" and award them with a completely justifiable participation award in the most inclusive font available.

Of course this is just my opinion and everyone knows all opinions are always welcome in exactly equal measure from all sources.

I will now retire to my safe place and pet my bad feelings animal.
