Discord is for people that have no clue how to work with server software. It works sure, but teamspeak is so much better. The backend, the rights management, encryption, queryconnections, decent bot support (not that *** stuff discord does).
To set up a decent teamspeak server one needs time and knowledge. Any noob can set up discord.
Oh and those who say "but discord is free". Nonsense in two ways. One you can just apply for a nonprofit license at teamspeak. Second discords privacy policy is terrible, that is how you pay for this "free" service. If you really think this software is free without any hidden traps you're terribly naive.
Discord is terrible. The clients are unstable, the browser interface was probably programmed by a monkey, because boy is it terrible. And seriously, why the hell would I want my browser open during gaming? It just sits there eating my ram.
Discord is for people with no knowledge about software, servers and IT in general. Which is good for them I guess, but when it comes to software quality teamspeak wins the race clearly. Just because people have no clue how to properly setup teamspeak, or don't know you can get free teamspeak if you just apply for an NPL doesn't mean discord is better.
We all know why discord is popular in some places. It doesn't cost anything. No money, no knowledge, no effort
But like someone said earlier. Teamspeak is incredibly complex compared to discord which is really simple. If that is what you seek, go for it. It will however, never be better than a decent teamspeak server.
If you use Discord, I hope you enjoy
- Having your details processed by the government
- Should you have facebook linked to your account, all your personal fb information is stored with your discord credentials, so it's not just a link.. they are actually storing your friends, email, phone number, etc on their own system.
- Discord keeping snippets of your text and voice chat
God knows what else. But hey, it's free. What's your privacy worth, though?

Administrator is not the same as a user. I guess you use discord.

As if you are planning the terrorist attack so its relevant what you speak from goverment's perspective.
As if having facebook isn't already giving away all privacy, including that of your family and friends.
As if anyone could do anything with my voice or picture. Maybe make funny video. Oh, wait, I do that myself on twitch.

Something tells me you don't really understand why these kind of services are free, why they lack privacy, and how they make all of their income to keep servers running.
I've worked in IT for 10 years, meaning I know a lot of things people like yourself don't. I'd rather not have my details scattered over the Internet.
If you're OK with it, that's fine.

I have a guild event in a few days where we do normal trials, many of my guildies are not experienced and the raid-leader mentioned we should get teamspeak or some alternative for the event.
(I know that it's not needed for normal trial runs, but we have many new inexperienced players in my guild & a 2K dps Overloading sorc ...so my raid-leader is slightly concerned)
I could probably borrow my friend's teamspeak for that one event, but should we get future events then I don't want to continue and bother my friend since he is not even in my guild.
At this point I don't care if it gathers my facebook information, I just don't want trouble or more stuff to think about. My main concern is if it needs any maintenance or anything - I just don't want to maintain it or deal much with it.

In 2016, if you need specialised IT knowledge to setup a chat service, then that chat service is overly complex and will die.

For simple things use discord. For a permanent, stable, quality guild quarters use teamspeak. In 2016, if you need specialised IT knowledge to setup a chat service, then that chat service is overly complex and will die.
Ha...ha...ha... sorry.

I am fine with either. I have guilds that use TS and guilds that use Discord and after a bit of adjusting the sound is pretty much the same. Discord does have one really nice feature. We have a guild member that is mute and she can use the text to chat feature so we hear what she types. I think she just has a tablet open and types into that?
[*]A common annoyance I have on both are people not using their @name, seems like a third of the people either use an old nickname and another third use a characters name who they are not playing.
