Discord is for people that have no clue how to work with server software. It works sure, but teamspeak is so much better. The backend, the rights management, encryption, queryconnections, decent bot support (not that *** stuff discord does).

To set up a decent teamspeak server one needs time and knowledge. Any noob can set up discord.

Oh and those who say "but discord is free". Nonsense in two ways. One you can just apply for a nonprofit license at teamspeak. Second discords privacy policy is terrible, that is how you pay for this "free" service. If you really think this software is free without any hidden traps you're terribly naive.

Discord is terrible. The clients are unstable, the browser interface was probably programmed by a monkey, because boy is it terrible. And seriously, why the hell would I want my browser open during gaming? It just sits there eating my ram.

Discord is for people with no knowledge about software, servers and IT in general. Which is good for them I guess, but when it comes to software quality teamspeak wins the race clearly. Just because people have no clue how to properly setup teamspeak, or don't know you can get free teamspeak if you just apply for an NPL doesn't mean discord is better.

We all know why discord is popular in some places. It doesn't cost anything. No money, no knowledge, no effort

But like someone said earlier. Teamspeak is incredibly complex compared to discord which is really simple. If that is what you seek, go for it. It will however, never be better than a decent teamspeak server.

If you use Discord, I hope you enjoy

    - Having your details processed by the government
    - Should you have facebook linked to your account, all your personal fb information is stored with your discord credentials, so it's not just a link.. they are actually storing your friends, email, phone number, etc on their own system.
    - Discord keeping snippets of your text and voice chat

God knows what else. But hey, it's free. What's your privacy worth, though?

I agree about that, and that is why I have no facebook or any other info on the internet that can be used against me. I use twitch without camera, I don't speak of anything but game when on discord, and also my native language is not English and my billing related stuff are connected to no bank account. I don't use instagram, snapchat, twitter, anything.

As someone who worked in IT for that long you are well aware about "privacy" on Facebook and similar.

Since moving to Discord, I don't think I'd go back to TS. My personal experience is that Discord is superior in most areas.

This is not an IT knowledge thing, I own two IT companies and we have designed and delivered some of the largest IT solutions in the world, it's just that Discord is newer, does not have the legacy garbage of TS, and for users (which is what most guild members are) Discord just works.

In 2016, if you need specialised IT knowledge to setup a chat service, then that chat service is overly complex and will die. Think about Skype for Business, hundreds of millions of users throughout the largest and most successful companies the world has known, carrying secure, regulated chat, all day every day, and you can set it up in 15 minutes via the Office 365 backend WWW page.

@Alucardo @Woeler since you two seem to know how TS and Discord functions - which option seems to be less of a headache to run/own for non-serious guild events?

I have a guild event in a few days where we do normal trials, many of my guildies are not experienced and the raid-leader mentioned we should get teamspeak or some alternative for the event.

(I know that it's not needed for normal trial runs, but we have many new inexperienced players in my guild & a 2K dps Overloading sorc ...so my raid-leader is slightly concerned)

I could probably borrow my friend's teamspeak for that one event, but should we get future events then I don't want to continue and bother my friend since he is not even in my guild.

At this point I don't care if it gathers my facebook information, I just don't want trouble or more stuff to think about. My main concern is if it needs any maintenance or anything - I just don't want to maintain it or deal much with it.

I like discord to keep everyone in the guild up to date on what's going on and to get everyone ready for raid etc since it saves chat.

However trying to raid in discord usually seems to lag so I prefer teamspeak

Also, discord mobile is literally ***

It's immaterial when a service starts, it's the delta from when that service comes into contact with a meaningfully competing service that we're interested in. In the technology sphere there are usually only two services of any note in any given domain (e.g iOS vs 'Droid), very often only one (e.g Exchange Server), because the others all get out-competed. But this attrition only starts when meaningful, level, competitive contact starts. Whilst there have long been alternatives to TS (some of which are better in some measures), they weren't ever at a competitive level with TS.

Discord is the first *competitive level* service to come along.

i.e., if, in 2001, I invent a new service to 100% automatically set fret height, action and intonation on a guitar, and no one else invents a competitive level service to do the same thing until 2015, it's no surprise if the only service which gets used is mine. It could be utter shite, but it will be used by default.

You can tell TS was not operating in a competitive level playing field because they never bothered to update their service to keep abreast of evolving customer paradigms; they did not need to, they were the only one operating at that level until Discord arrived, hence Discord getting half a billion customers in a year. It's not that Discord is great, it's that TS got lazy due to hubris.

Teamspeak had loads of competitors, mumble, ventrilo, raidcall to name a few. There was never any need for ease of use as most of its end users until very recently were hardcore gamers who knew how to type in server ips and setup push to talk etc.

Tbh it's not that hard to setup anyway, most providers do all of it for you. You just login as admin and setup channels and other admins.

I play both PS4 and PC and I prefer Guild voice chat on PS4 for ease of use and getting more people together without the complexity of sharing server links, passwords etc.

For the record I have my own Teamspeak 3 server running on a Linux VPS.

As to the privacy thing, the minute you first connected to your ISP you lost that. lmao

TS is so last decade... For a semi-advanced casual like me Discord is more user friendly, have better sound quality and is more reliable. We have two voice-comms in our guild: TS and Discord, and guess what? TS server is empty 99% of the time, everybody is chatting on Discord. I won't renew the TS subscription after it expires.
As for the privacy: do you use a smartphone or any Google/Apple product? Gmail, maybe?... Then you lost your privacy long time ago. Sorry, but not sorry.

I can't say how stable it because the highest number of people in the same room I've got so far was 5 or 6.

We have had more than 20 at one time in Discord and it was fine.

I am fine with either. I have guilds that use TS and guilds that use Discord and after a bit of adjusting the sound is pretty much the same. Discord does have one really nice feature. We have a guild member that is mute and she can use the text to chat feature so we hear what she types. I think she just has a tablet open and types into that?

Of course discord is free and worth every penny so for a freebee the lower quality sound would not be bad.

Ventrilo has great quality - If you are an admin you can ban IP's, move people into different channels, lock a channel with a password, AND has a mobile app. I hop on our server occasionally while Im out and about :) No, it doesnt allow fancy memes etc like discord, but thats what the forums are for right?

Ive had occasions where people have attacked our voip servers with tts auto join that changes their names etc and basically crashes the server so the ability to lay down the ban hammer is important to me.
