I am wondering, did they ever mention in doing this?
I'd love to dye staves on my sorcerer and my swords as well.

This happens to be one of the suggestions I have in my Overhaul thread which you can find on my signature. Interestingly, ZOS has added basically every suggestion I listed down in there in a span of over a year - except Weapon Gilding/Weapon Dye.

Here's hoping that's in the works, too.

A few months back this was discussed during one ESO live show.

Supposedly this has been a heavily debated issue discussed internally for... reasons. And that's why they haven't implemented it yet.

Personally I believe we're good as we are now but I understand some gear tiers might not look good in terms of their colors mixing with the rest of your atire.

I would say that if you could.. just make them a few types of metal colours for the steel and then your garden variety for the hilt non steel parts.

That would be more realistic, but it would seem very odd in a game where we can dye metal armour any colour we like.

That's the point I've been hearing more and more from people. The fact is, we can dye metal armor any color we want, including bright purple/pink, neon colors of all kinds. And now (after months of hem-hawwing from devs) we can now do it to shields. But they still refuse to let us dye weapons. Why?

Frankly, my problem is that I can't just dye my swords to look like regular iron or steel, and instead have to constantly deal with these ruby-red or (previously) blue weapons from void-steel.

They don't like to tell us things if they don't have to, so we'll likely never know why they won't make weapon dyeing a thing. It could be at least another year before we see it, if we ever do. But seriously, they need to revoke decision making abilities from devs that argue against it. I'll tolerate pink and neon green weapons running around just fine if I'm able to dye mine a reasonable color. I honestly can't find a good reason for it not being a reality... unless they have tried it and can't make it functional, which I find unlikely.

As I say on every one of these threads....

Please let us dye weapons! I just want silver swords! SILVER SWORDS!!

Why is it too much to ask to have things look more realistic? If they are worried about people making things bizarre colors, they could specifically have a weapon color palette that is only browns/silvers/black/white/gold/etc.

Agreed. The fact that we still can't do this is just ridiculous. Especially after they finally decided to let us dye shields.

I'm not a fan of green sword blades. It kinda looks like I'm wielding a plastic sword instead of an actual metal sword. Just an option to make weapons look like regular metal would be great. The option could even limit the colours to what is already available to craft (if for some reason it needs to be limited). Like be able to make voidsteel look like steel or quicksilver. After a certain point, the models are the same anyway.

Then why do 90% of us already run around with bright red swords?
I suspect there is something technically different with weapons.

because that is the color of the style/material you use which is immersive.

Then we shouldn't be able to dye armor or shields that use metal either...the logic makes no sense.

I heard they don't want to do it because they don't want male characters swinging their big pink swords around. That should be the least of their worries. Thanks to the many emotes we have people have been using them cleverly to simulate sex acts. I would much rather see pink swords than continue to see the naked *** in the cities.

Ya I hear ya. I don't necessarily disagree. I am just telling you what devs said. To be fair thoug, you could argue that amortization and shields could be covered with a material that is able to dye. This would not have an effect in battle and therefore plausible. With weapons on the other hand, you are not necessarily able to cover them with a material that can be dye because it will hurt the efficiency of your weapon such as a sword or axe. That said, it would not apply to stuff like grips and staves so oooo idk.

I refuse to use the ridiculous red weapons so this subject really annoys me. We can dye armor, shields and costumes but not weapons?
The immersion argument is weak when you see people in pink Dark Brotherhood robes...what's immersive about that?

One could argue cloth is something that can practically be dyed. Adding to dye to steel sword is not practical.

That's subjective, though. Having a green/blue/red/ginger sword is not immersive to me. It's the opposite of immersive.

My guess is it has not been released because of some future crown store item. Whether that be separate weapon dyes or something else there is no other reason to have not added them yet.

That argument would fall flat though since we can already dye steel when we dye our armour. It would only make sense if no metal was dyeable at all.

It is immersive if the natural color of the metal or style is that color. For instance, rubedite naturally comes in red from the ground. It is immersive to be red because it is the natural color in TS lore. Same as how gold or silver have a natural color. This is objectively immersive because it is natural to TES lore like gold or silver would be to us.

Agreed. However, one could argue that when steel.is dyed for armor that it is covered with a material that is dyeable. Such as a thin layer of cloth. This would not ruin the effectiveness of steel in combat, but also allow it to be dyed in an immersive way. A sword on the other hand would have its efficiency reduced if you covered it in cloth to make it dye.

That's not really what immersive means, imo. Immersion typically means you are engrossed in a fictional world and there is nothing that jolts you out of it back into the real world. Bright and garish coloured metals might be a thing in the lore of TES. But when you're immersed in a visual representation of a fantasy world that, for the most part, seems visually consistent with realistic medieval aesthetics we know and understand, then out comes a bright green sword, it looks out of place and breaks the spell, imo.

If G.R.R. Martin decides there is gonna be giant pink panda people in his world, that might then be officially and objectively part of the lore of that world now, but it doesn't make it any less silly and immersion-breaking for the reader who was, up to that point, engrossed in that world.
