You see the Redguard woman behind you? I assume that's what your friend sees when they made the comment about seeing your face.

I made my Redguard woman light skinned but that's because I was going for a GoT Sand Snake thing with her.

My stable of characters from most popular to least.
    • The tiny Dunmer female on the left has been harassed by guys wanting to hook up IRL. Srsly? She's a toon! People strike up conversations with her. Some questions about what a Dumner is doing in DC. Plenty of friend requests but only one guild invite (which she accepted so I could be in a DC guild).
    • The next one -- platinum blond Altmer -- has gotten many guild membership offers, though I just use her as a bank mule.
    • The redheaded Altmer has gotten a couple of guild invites and most of my friend requests. She was my first Sorc
    • My imperial gets offers to group, usually (I think) from women. Usually carries a giant maul so maybe that and her scar are off-putting for the guys. IMO she's attractive in a badass kinda way, but what do I know? Master crafter too -- if you ever see gear from Claudia Caerellius, she made it.
    • My leopard spotted Khajiit gets group requests if he happens to be doing the content someone else wants to do. One guild invite, from a Khajiit only guild. This was my first character and I have played him far more than any other character.
    • People will text chat with my bosmer, but no requests. Not sure why she is not as popular as the other pretty females. Short?
    • LoL, people generally won't even answer my big black shirtless Khajiit when he speaks to them. One guy said thanks after I saved his backside in a delve about 5 times. One guy made a joke about how I needed to put on a shirt "for the gods' sakes!" Another guy asked me why I don't wear chest armor. Those 3 are all the social interaction he has had.
    • My old, scrawny male Dunmer is essentially invisible. Nothing. I don't know if people are just horrified or what. IMO he looks the part of a wizard. I have to wonder what the reaction would be if I ran him around in a city au naturale :-O
    ESO-Stable1.png
People's IRL prejudices really come out in a game like this. No one makes much attempt to hide them here.

I stood in Mournhold once, when 3 level 3 players in goblin costumes, who were searching for 1 last guy for goldpledge, walked up to me and did the /laugh emote...

Also I experienced enemy players in pvp do the same, and I was once mowed over by a zerg, who decided to run back 70 meters to look at my dead noob body Q.Q

I have an overweight female Orc templar that gets a lot of abuse. It's an interesting social experiment to see how people treat her. They say the things out loud that they probably whisper and snicker about in real life.
What sense would that make? They're just pixels you created on your whim. More likely people are bothered by pink armored knights and bearded, fat orcs in wedding dresses breaking any last bit of immersion. Those are the only reasons that would explain abuse to me. But not being fat or ugly.

I have an orc with the half body burned scar and during the height of the ebola scare a couple of people randomly commented about how I have ebola while I was crafting ha. I then proceeded to strip off all my clothes and sexy dance next to the loudest guy talking crap. He was like "eww dude cover up and get away from me, I don't want to catch that". I chased him around the Vulkhel crafting pagoda for a minute casting molten weapons unarmed so it looked like I was magically fistpumping the air :p

I have a dark skinned Redguard female, which has an "african" look to her. I was curious about if people will comment on this. They don't, but something else is very strange with it - it is like I would be invisible to them. No one is talking to her or is approaching her. Totally different experience than with my light and fair skinned other female characters.

Actually, I have just the opposite issue. The only one of my characters that gets any comments from strangers on her looks is my Redguard female (and actually she gets quite a few as well) but my Nord female gets no notice at all. I really have no idea why..

People really are silly when they think your characters' appearance has anything to do with anything.

IRL I look like a cross between Anderson Silva and Shrek, so it's especially interesting for me to interact in an MMO as a small petite female elf or an old geezer Dumbledore type. The old geezer has never had even one join group, friend request or guild invite and he's almost level 20. He's also DPS so he leads a lonely dejected life, lmao. I play him when I don't want to interact with anyone. My petite female elf receives plentiful offers to trade, daily guild invites, join group and friend requests, and is happily Mara pledged, lol. I'm considering making a character that resembles me physically, but I'll have to think about that.
The gauntlet has been thrown down to create the ugliest character possible!

If you select "randomize appearance" you get the inbred look.

A friend of mine saw me at first in my Redguard avatar. He did not mention anything about my appearance. But next time, when he saw me as a fair skinned Breton, his comment was "finally I can see your face" - that was funny, but strange as well.

Edit: had to correct the race, it was a Breton, not a Bosmer.

That sounds like a pixel problem.

I do have to say that My Orc Templar has gotten a lot of unkind words for his looks. I actually take a lot of time into building a style and theme for every character I make. I don't take it personally either, because I actually wanted him to look ugly. In many MMO's I've made ugly characters, because to be honest I like bucking the trend that a hero has to have shiny hair, gleaming teeth, perfect figure and the rest of it. You'd be surprised what some of the deadliest soldiers ever looked like. Heroism is internal, it is not external. I like that Orc Templar. He's old, he's got wrinkles, he's got some pretty bad scars over his whole body (Spent a long time in Coldharbor), his skin is unhealthy and pale, and yes he's fat (but didn't I mention he's really old) but he has a cheerful smile. I pause on that a moment - he has a cheerful smile. The whole notion behind this character was that behind all the hell he'd been through, the good person within keeps trudging on. I'm not a roleplayer but I do like to add a little 3d to the character (even if I do skip dialogues now, its only because I know what they're going to say before they say it).

Just going to say: Sometimes its fun to push the slider down and make someone shorter, normal sized, skinny, fat, or 'odd' looking. I don't do such things to be mocking, but more because of a recognition of the internal. I suppose the reason I think about things like this in character design is that I do in some manner recognize the RPG part of the MMORPG.

Edit: As an aside, the character I've played most is Dodge Hopper. He's a muscular north-Italian (the idea being mixed between Imperial and Nord) looking guy of normal height (I never pushed the slider up or down). I tried to give him a determined look on his face. Its funny how many people tower over that character, and I'm not talking just Altmer and Orcs. Being normal sized in the game seems small. I even find most Bosmer males are my height (or at least really close to it). As an observation, I guess no one wants to be short (Or normal sized for that matter).

That being normal sized looks small is a matter of the camera angle to the character - I know this very well from second life - in second life this leads to that all has to be oversized to make it look normal. If the camera would be on character height and nearby the character, this is different, but normally we look at it in 3rd person from a position behind and up - and this leads to that speed, size and other factors are distorted to our perception.

Edit: and no it is not a pixel problem with the appearance of my Redguard - her face is clearly to see.

    pK50Gbq.jpg

Well, this one has better lighting - when she emerged from coldhabour at level 3.

    dhT42dX.jpg

I guess you are right. I figured it was a dark lighting and poor screen issue by what was described. I know I've gone to Cyrodiil before on terrible gfx settings, and everyone just looks like wandering blobs when you do that. I figured the same here. Either way, cool character. I'm a big fan of the ragada. I'm planning to make one when I get more character slots, but the hard choice for me is the class. The new Hurricane skill for sorcerers is tempting thematically, but the sorcerer class as a whole seems pretty abominable to standard Redguard culture. Besides, I suspect DK or NB would work best with the racials. The irony is I think Templar is probably closer to their culture.

I thought a Redguard stam sorc would be a Sword Saint kind of deal. I'm hardly an expert, but the bits and pieces that I've seen seem to suggest that.

Its interesting that most of the heavy set characters are made to look ugly as well. I have seen quite a few large orc females but, I cant recall ever seeing a large female high elf.

I made a large female high elf for my first toon. Unfortunately i switched alliances and now she is rarely played, but they do exist!

@Lysette: Odd. Are you wearing the same costume on both characters? Maybe it's a contrast thing.

My Redguard is normally wearing the brocade robe like in the first picture - simply because I think that goes the best with her hair dress and styling. Just when she is on a stealth mission, I take it off - and her real armor is breton medium, so just her eyes and hands are exposed, even this doesn't matter due to her skin color, it would not reflect light easily - well, I am a role player, I pay attention to such things, even they do not matter in regards to the stealth game mechanics in ESO.

I do not think that it is a contrast thing, but that it is something different. Maybe similar to what my real life person is experiencing, when I look at dark skinned people. I can see their beauty and consider their sexiness logically, but my body does not react to it, whatsoever. And maybe that is for people with my avatar this way, she might appear to them in their minds as if she is wearing a mask instead of her skin. I really don't know, it is just a guess. Even when I let her wear the bosmer doeskin outfit, she is not recognized - it looks nice on her, but to others it might just appear to be all chocolate-brown.

It does not bother me though nor would it be an issue - it is just something I recognized.

At the bank today there was a sexy naked Nord lady on the table.

Of course Gontrand removed his clothes and went on the table with her.

Some player said: "Aww, thank God for clothes".

My pot-bellied, flat-chested Argonian, "Squirts-All-Colors", gets the same sort of abuse. Her extreme appearance was my goal, though...so I take the insults as compliments. x)

My main character is a Nord. A fat Nord that goes by the name of Alphonse Gabriel Capone. This is him:

Nearly everyday someone will make a comment along the lines of "omg you so funny you so fat" or "You'd look badass if you weren't such a ***" and " You're disgusting". I don't mind. I think it's hilarious. I was wondering if anyone else has received comments about their fat characters.

If it makes you feel better i would tots do him :p

The only comments I've seen about my fat-cat Khajiit have, hilariously, been on the forums.

You guys should make a guild for fat characters xD
You could call it "Cuddly people have feelings too" or something, because fat characters are so nice to hug <3<3<3.
I used to have a fat Khajiit and also received immediately a message "You are fat"... why thank you, I know that xD
