Fresh characters now start out in (almost) full armour - am I the only one who doesn't like this?

I see that new characters (created without using any of the templates) now start out in the Wailing Prison actually wearing armour (only lacking belt and helmet)... Light for a sorc, medium for a nightblade, heavy for Templar and DK...
Am I the only one who doesn't really like this? It was much more realistic when you started out in prison garb... Maybe make the chest the prophet gives you, have an almost full set instead (and make it actually give you armour related to your class, not completely random)? Or make it possible to pick up armour on your way out of the Wailing Prison?

I noticed that now novice gear look like garbage. And it's nice to see. But appear in prison in full heavy armor - seriously? Molag Bal is so caring^^

I think it will confuse new players into thinking their class can only wear one type of armor. It was bad enough at character creation that your character would display certain types of armor. This takes that a step further.

I agree, that sounds silly & really immersion breaking

I hope this gets changed back.

When I first read this I thought it was a joke. Apparently it's just a really, really poor decision on the part of ZOS. They've made a few regarding the beginning stages of the game IMO, so it's not a huge surprise to me. I've still got a bad taste in my mouth about how they completely ruined the flow of the game by dropping us in Stonefalls/Auridon/Daggerfall after the escape from the wailing prison. I REALLY hope this doesn't make it to live.

I was thinking more along the lines of an 'armour closet' in the room where you pick up your weapon, or something like that. Perhaps as a replacement for the crate The Prophet gives you (which is totally random, anyway).

Noticed it, it was a late addition to the patch notes. While I didn't think it was that big a deal, I did think of those players who use to chains as part of their costume, and how they won't be available to get again after if this goes live. So I went over the the RP guild forum and gave them a heads up to stock up just in case.

If so, they could make it a template. The fact that it happens when you create a NEW character, and that it is in the patch notes as well, suggests they actually intend this as a permanent change...

The whiners they listen to while bigger more important issues go on...

I put this right up there with forcing us to stand there and wait for an NPC's dialog to end otherwise we hear it get cut off. Full immersion right ZOS? Play your way - as long as it is the one way we have chosen for you.

Why not have these silly ideas as options that power alt makers can select if they don't want to play the early stages of the game so that the rest of us can "play the way WE want".

I like the change. However, I can see the point that newcomers might think those characters can only use one kind of armor.

I would prefer a closet/wardrobe where the player can pick a few pieces of armor.

Yeah, this is a bad idea in concept. I do reserve the right to actually try it on PTS, though. Maybe this weekend.

Definitely a tangent to the original post, but yes, the change to starting players in those zones makes no sense to me either. There were some players and reviewers in beta who didn't like the starter islands, so ZOS decided to make them optional.

That makes sense. Good call. Give options. Not everyone wants or needs a starter island. Bravo.

So why not have someone on the starter island, near where you wake up, who can point you to a boat to get off of the island? It is just as easy to implement as what they came up with (starting you in Stonefalls/Auridon/Daggerfall near someone who can point you toward a boat to take you to the starter island) but it is better at preserving immersion, encouraging new players to use the islands, and making the pre-existing dialogue and NPC reactions/placement sensible.

An an example, when I go back to Bleakrock with a new character, if I go upstairs at the inn where Captain Rana is waiting, an NPC facing away from me (toward the room with the bed where you used to start the game after escaping from Coldharbor) is still glad to see that I'm finally awake...

Getting back to the original post, my tangent is relevant. If they just want to add armor to the PTS for testers, that's fine, but if they want that change to go to live, I am not for it. In the latter case, if they are getting complaints about new characters being under-equipped, add some armor to that room where you grab your first weapons or better yet, increase the number of armor in containers you find or to drops from the mobs you face after moving past that room.

Again, as with the alternate way to give an option to skip the starter islands, you keep the logic of the story and experience of immersion intact by making a similar sized change.

Would be nice to get a ZOS response on this thread, why they felt this change was necessary and if there was some meaning to it we have failed to realize yet, @ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_JessicaFolsom

My personal opinion is that it goes against the beloved Elder Scrolls tradition of starting in rags & building up your character from there.
It also creates certain kind of expectations, when your character starts by wearing a certain type of armour.

As fugly and as low-quality the starting clothes look (from a technical standpoint, compared to just about all other clothes in the game) this is a weird change.

The pts isn't the game, the pts isn't a special playground for you. You are invited to go test things pertaining to the patch and upcoming changes/ content. Some of the comments here are beyond silly considering its the pts not the actual game. Its a testing server. They absolutely should give you everything you need so you can strait to testing! This honestly blows me away.

Thats what templates and the character transfer are for.

And things you see in the patch notes aren't PTS only things. They will be going live. This includes the new armor for fresh players in coldharbor prison.

The way they are doing it, starting sorcs in light, nightblades in med, and temps/dks in heavy is kinda forcing the archetype on the player. The game should still start you out in rags, but they should add the armor pickups inside coldharbor so players can pick the armor they want to start leveling up in. I know as a new player it does take a while to get a full set of desired armor type so that would be a better way to go.

Just wanted to let you all know that, based on the feedback we received, we will be reverting this change once Update 5 goes live tomorrow. New characters will still begin the game wearing the Soul Shriven rags, and the low-level armor you started with on the PTS will be available in chests throughout the Wailing Prison.

Well so much for my plan to sell my stockpile of chains to RP cosplayers in game.

Don't give me that look, I gave them fair warning the change was coming.

'Tis a pity you ignored the same feedback about the change to where new players emerge into the world, from the start island to the main city.

IMO that was actually worse than waking up with some crude armour, though I also think that's stupid, there's no need to change anything now in Wailing Prison, except perhaps to undo the content nerf pre-launch to go back to the full Oblivion experience you originally created right at the start of the game.

    Glad to hear that.

Sounded pretty cheesy immersion wise and not really needed outside of that. You find enough gear in chests, you can pick up many pieces of armor now off racks on the ship when you first arrive or in the towers and buildings. So by the time you get to the starter island you should have a pretty good starter set of gear anyway if you put effort into looking.

Good stuff. Much better method. Will the chests be the same no matter what class you start out in tho, so sorcs arent forced into light, nb into medium, and dk/temp into heavy?
