Texture Quality

On thing to note when adjusting settings is to set it to the highest level recommended (or Ultra-High as you wish), then work down settings individually to get the best balance for you of image quality v performance.

If you set say Medium quality defaults, then adjust up settings it will not enable some graphics features which are directly related to the different settings. In other words, some graphics features or level of detail will not improve as they would if set to highest setting then adjusted down.

Also, on this LOD (level of detail) issue, I believe that the Mac client still has some fixes implemented which will reduce down LOD as memory usage increases which will lower texture quality over time if memory use goes up over time (perhaps not so much now the core memory leak issue seems to have been addressed) This is separate from the PC client though there may still be some correlation between memory use and texture quality in LOD popping in and out and reducing in quality over time.

Bear in mind also that while it gives you nice 'shinies' using the settings tweaks, the settings are there for a purpose and higher texture Quality settings will impact performance especially in PVP big battle situations where performance is perhaps more important than great looking armor.

Lastly, comparing textures close up in the environment such as a stone wall or wooden post, they look better from a distance but moving within 1-2 metres will look low quality and this is just down to the texture resolution of the assets in game. All about getting nice looks (which ESO does really well IMO) balanced against performance of client and server.

Just to follow up, we did see the same issue internally and will roll out a fix as soon as we have one. :) Thanks again for the excellent repro steps, it helped a lot!

    Yaaaaaaaaaaay! Super awesome!

Wait. Will come with the Werewolves buff patch?

(See what I did there? Uh huh.)

if you could be so kind, please direct me to the relevant shadows settings in UserSettings? A google search provided only one relevant entry, which i seem to have topped already.

    SET HIGH_RESOLUTION_SHADOWS "0"
(or 1 if you want them on)

That controls shadow resolution independently from the main setting which is for draw distance and base shadow resolution. The plain one is just SET SHADOWS "4".

the '-3' did not seem to change anything for me.

It makes a huge difference on my computer, though I'm running an i7 2600k and a gtx780sc acx.

There's no texture pops (all textures load up at max). Metal looks all shiny and you can see stitching and weave in fabrics.

Same here, I have been using it ever since I became aware of it around launch. I run an i7 2600k, 16gb ddr3, 3840x2160 (4k res) 60hz ips monitor (Dell UP2414Q), ssd, and was on a gtx 780 "ftw" acx (but I sold that and am buying a pair of GTX 980's as soon as they launch which is supposed to be sep. 18th, since the 780 couldn't cut it at 4k for me). It makes an enormous quality difference and is another one of those options that should be accessible in-game, but are not. Others include skill screen transitions, maximum framerate (via minimum frame time setting), camera options (clamped and reverted automatically even though it can be changed in the usersettings file :( ), and high-res/low-res shadows independent of shadow draw distances. All but the camera options can be set and are retained by the game.

An example of what, if the camera settings weren't automatically reverted by the game despite existing in the usersettings file already, would be possible is this:

OMG, make it so!! Any word gina on this since youre in the thread?? :)

It has always looked like that for me.

same character, early level to current level. So the gear has changed. Prior to the -3 and even some of the game updates for video quality.

I am curious if you see the concern in these pics as I have not noticed what it is you guys reference - not saying it is not happening - just that I am not sure I have seen it.

Must admit I just finshed ebonheart so have been moved to daggerfell at vet level. The faces appear wooden and non descript compared to ebonheart. I dont know if this is an early character model res issue or its just me.

So, just bringing this thread again... seems like there's nothing done on v1.4.x.... still same issue.

BUT I think forcing it on AFx16 on the driver level seems to help. I think...

It looks worse as time goes on, nothing has changed with my pc yet walls dnt load properly texture wise, other players detail is horrible, they just keep messing crap up over and over and over and over ...oh and overrrrrrrrrrrr.

    Video evidence at 15 seconds.
Low quality texture increases to high quality as you move in....then degrades back to low quality.
    This is ultra settings.

how does this work in pvp? will it auto adjust to adapt performance ? or will i get fps issues ?

Only force -3 if your computer can handle it. Try -2 if you think you might get fps issues. With -1 you'll still see some texture pop. And 0 is the default which you have now.

this is much better on npcs thanks!

    but..

it only works on npcs, im still getting it on buildings and rocks ect, is there anyway to force this ?

pics attached notice the middle building from difference distacnes.

with buildings it doesnt gently gain detail it just pops out of nowhere.

I've never noticed any problems on buildings, so no idea if the setting changes texture pops on buildings or not.

okie so buildings dont pop for you ? or just not noticed ?

Buildings and wall surfaces don't pop for me, they all load in at high res.

Might try turning "depth of field" off.
Evidently this causes the distant blur effect...so the texture may upgrade ?
    I'll find out later.
