Oh wait... we're talking about ESO..I was having flashbacks to virtually every other thing i've bought early in life....

It's like today Prada discount 50% and you just bought Prada yesterday and you come to the shop and asking for 50% discount for your purchased?

How do you know this to be true? Who's to say that they wont add other dogs that you can get?
Coming next: They'll probably offer the people who left a guar mount to come back.
Attracting new subscribers is always more difficult than retaining current ones. You know what's more difficult yet? Convincing people who left with a bad taste in their mouth to return.

You do understand this discussion is not about the discounted price, right? It's about offering an exclusive to future customers that is not available to existing customers.
To use your analogy, say you bought your full price Prada bag yesterday, and today you come in the shop, and they have a new, better Prada bag that you like much more than the one you just bought...and it's even cheaper. You walk up to the counter with it and you're told, sorry ma'am, you already OWN a Prada bag, so you can't have that one. That Prada bag is only for new Prada customers. Please put it back.
The Elder Scrolls games are all about allowing the player to go where they want, be who they want, and do what they want. We feel that putting pay gates between the player and content at any point in game ruins that feeling of freedom, and just having one small monthly fee for 100% access to the game fits the IP and the game much better than a system where you have to pay for features and access as you play. The Elder Scrolls Online was designed and developed to be a premium experience: hundreds of hours of gameplay, tons of depth and features, professional customer support – and a commitment to have ongoing content at regular intervals after launch. This type of experience is best paired with a one-time fee per month, as opposed to many smaller payments that would probably add up to more than $US14.99/month any way.

All Zos had to do was release some dog or pet to current players prior to this. You wouldn't have heard a peep. I can't fathom how the people working for this company can't see the backlash coming from decisions like this. Especially when it's directed at their premium customers (IE).

How many people do you honestly think would pay a second sub fee and reroll all their toons for that? Most people aren't going to buy a second exact same purse either (especially not a genuine Prada).
They would make more money offering the dog as a stand-alone purchase, but it seems like they're more interested in exclusivity and alienation.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Actually, I was able to get the beta pet just for being accepted into the beta and creating an account. I never actually got to download the game, due to data caps, but when I got the physical copy on release and logged in, sure enough, the beta pet was waiting for me.Later you made the choice to give all beta players who had logged in and helped during any beta period the pet for helping. With everyone who had put in a request to join the beta being given access to the servers for the last couple of weekends this meant everyone who had signed up to beta and actively took part got a reward. This was a good choice and went a long way to making people happy.

Well in the original analogy they are not exatly the same purse, the second one had a new flashy gold ring or something like that.
I get it, in a way. I beta tested, bought Imp edition, would like a dog for a pet.
However, I won't let a digital pet that does nothing useful, get me all upset, claim to quit, and curse a game I enjoy, or the devolpers. Look no company is ever going to make 100% of its customers happy, other pets will come, i would be willing to bet other dogs included.
It's not that big of a deal...
I find this also kind of sad. The people who had been here from the start should also deserve something if new people are getting (one of the) best pets so far for sticking with the game through its ups and downs so far.
Even if not the same dog, but a different one like a "Loyal Shepherd" or whatever really.
