What level did you get your horse?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but on the alt I play right now I only have 15K by level 25
I don't spend on anything except the occasional repair, and I sell anything that is not green or above
It took me to around level 40 to have just around 45k saved up. I tend to buy crafting improvements fairly often so that can be a pretty large money sink D:

for my first 42k horse, I sacrificed breaking down white items and just sold them for cash. broke down green-purple only. It helped :) also crafted my own gear, and I farmed all the mats I could find. When I leveled my crafting past a point of needed a certain mat, I sold it to someone lower.

Also joining a big trading guild helped.

Stuff like that helped, got my horse at level 30.

We got the Imperial edition, so we've been able to use the white horse from the beginning. However neither of us actually uses a horse all that often because we stop to harvest materials all the time and it's too bothersome to get on and off, or because we're just simply enjoying the scenery and taking our time wandering around. The only place where he ever felt he truly needed a horse was Cyrodil because it is so vast, though it was handy for getting across boring stretches of the Alikir Desert, and if you're trying to hurry from one quest marker to the next to just 'get it done'.

My husband keeps saying he's going to save up for a horse and has had enough gold to buy the cheapest one only about twice since we started playing during early access (he's now level 48), but bank space and repairs have always taken precedence (and so far it's been a better deal than the space that could be added by a horse), and he's never had enough gold for one of the more expensive ones. My husband mainly plays solo though he sometimes does dungeons with friends, and has been focusing on doing every single quest available in each zone (since completing quests seems to be the main way to acquire gold). I think he was somewhere in the 30's level-wise when he had finally saved up enough to buy the cheapest horse, and then chose bank-space instead. Though an important point is that because he does crafting he deconstructs a lot of loot rather than selling it, and he does always repair his armor. I myself am still around level 10 (being indecisive about which character I really want to commit to) but even though I sell everything I pick up aside from the stuff I harvest for crafting, and never buy anything, by level 10 I've barely accumulated enough to get 3 bag upgrades which I think comes to 7,400.

I myself was asking him how in the world people could afford things like horses, or those rare motifs people advertize for 90k in zone chat. He said 'that's your answer - they sell stuff to other players like those motifs'. It seems like he's probably right, considering that my penny-pinching method certainly doesn't seem to be resulting in much.

The first 42k horse I got around level 36 or so on my main. Still will take some time to equip the other 7 characters with 42k horses.

You can use the palomino at level 3, same as the Imperial. Of the alts I have made, the first place I go after skipping the tutorial is the mages guild. The reward for joining them is 20 something gold, then I go straight to the stable and buy the palomino for 1g.

VR3 and I have 3 horses, 42k draft horse, 42k speed horse and 1g imperial horse, nearly got enough to buy the last 42k stamina horse, questing in VR zones yields a fair bit over time, the odd lucky rare motif drop sells well altho I don't try to price gouge like most you see in zone chats, I sell both barbaric and primal for 10k each, stacks from deconstructs, sell to npc's, never bought gold nor will I, and to be honest I never really use my horses except for the added capacity from my draft horse, I find loads more stuff when I walk.

Yeah, Imperial Edition and Palomino aside, it's pretty easy to have enough gold to buy a horse by the time you hit level 20. If you harvest every node you come across and sell the refined materials you get from them, sell the dropped gear that you get instead of deconstructing it, don't buy inventory/bank upgrades past the cheapest ones, and don't waste too much money on repairs... You'll easily be able to afford a horse. Heck, if you do that you can probably afford a basic horse by about level 12-15.

So basically don't do any crafting, and you can get a horse much earlier, um thanks for the info, but I'll enjoy the crafting and wait.

I see people riding around that are level 16 and have a horse already. I'm lucky to have 3,000 gold at level 16 cause I die so much and spend so much on repairs.

Of course, I'm playing solo. I join people sometimes but mostly play single which makes it much more difficult.

I'm wondering if they were able to save up 14,000 gold for their horse by level 16 or if they were able to do it because they played in groups or if friends loan them the gold.

Oh yeah, forgot, they maybe BOUGHT their gold to get their horse.

Just wondering if I'm that bad of a player or if they are they good that they can accumulate 14,000 by level 16.

I purchased the Imperial Horse from the Zenimax store.

Usually they have alts if it is one of the 40k horses.

For me, I have the Imperial edition so I had a horse by level 3 (when I left coldharbor).

But it took me till 36 or so just to afford the 40k horse. Was not happy about that.

But that was also before they raised the gold dropped from 1 per mob to 2+ per mob. So I am sure I could get a 40k horse by level 20 now.

My Imperial horse is maxed out and my Gaited which I'm putting speed into and a bit more stamina (it's nice to fly through mobs and not get knocked off as others in your group do) --- anyway my Gaited horse is more than halfway leveled, I could've bought it earlier but didn't until I realized I wanted Frost and Shadowmere.... from Skyrim... and there you have their names XD Now I just need some dragons to spawn to watch my horses go attack them..... c'mon ZOS make it happen! Attacking horses and Dragons!

    a) People might have the Imperial edition. The white horse costs 1g then. All my alts have one at level 3 from day 1. (March 30th).

    b) They are alt of another character, and money was transferred.

Thanks to all for their responses. I discovered I could buy the Palomino horse without buying the Imperial Edition ( the other features of the Imperial Edition besides the horse didn't seem to be all that useful ).

Wow, makes a huge difference. Let's me travel much faster and I was able to almost double my gold in one day even after paying for repairs several times.

Wish I had realized I could do that a long time ago, I would be much further along.

    Very very interesting discussion.

My main is level 24, and I can afford the expensive horses.

The trick was to join several trade guilds and sell racial motif books. You search the guild shop for undervalued books and announce on the chat that you are selling them. Usually people offer a lot more, so you just buy the book they want from the shop, then give it to them personally. You get about 0.8-1.5k profit per book, and it's easy to find buyers. Moreover, you don't get stuck with books you can't sell, since you don't actually buy them until you have a client.

Upon accumulating a starting capital of about 25k, I started trading the more expensive motifs, though it was a little more time-consuming and nervous. Daedric styles seemed the most profitable. Some people would sell them for 30k, while others would buy them for 45k. One suggestion is not to be too greedy, otherwise you'll end up waiting way too long to resell the book.

I went from having around 12k to 50k this way. The second part was slightly tedious, so I don't think I'll be doing it any more. The novelty of earning money the smart way didn't last long.
