A lot of bored kids out of school. A lot of bored, angry adults worried about their businesses and/or jobs, stuck at home. Mix in being anonymous on the net and a lack of class= more toxicity. Better words on the net then violence on the street.

Sounds like juvenile behaviour. Think about this way it may help; They get bullied in real life about their race so they use the game platform as a way of relieving that pent up hurt, anger and stress. So essentially you are a part of their therapy.

I know you dont deserve their tirade of hate but it really is not about you....it's everything to do with their brokeness

I apologise to you on their behalf and hope next time yo might consider using hearts or humour or ignore to counteract their rage and to protect yourself and not allow it to ruin your gaming experience. If it's one thing I learned from gaming is that I cannot cotrol what other people say or do i can only control how i allow it to affect me and how i react to that bad behaviour. Also expect toxicity in some pvpers it comes with the territory so the moment you step into pvp you are signing up for it. Im not perfect i have bad days when things do get under my skin but i also have a lot of good and even some great days😊❤

I'm amused at the people who seem to be obsessed with the idea that I did something wrong to deserve it, and am not telling them.

No folks, people really do quite often suck, and if you can't see it, then you're likely part of the problem.
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

Snowflakes happened that report anyone for any reason or no reason at all, including simple disagreements and misunderstood jokes. Playing ESO since 2015 and MMOs in general since 2005. The only people I ever reported were spammers or cheaters (people that spam you in /w trying to sell gold or people using fly hacks), and I have a grand total of one person on my ignore list in ESO.

Which is another thing... Running to the nearest authority figure to punish people who said mean words to you instead of using tools at your disposal and just blocking them. Cancel culture at its peak.

If I had to guess, you're both provoking them, and overreacting when they respond to your provocations. I'm sure you could have done a lot to prevent the situation.

That is your truth. And there is their truth, and there is the truths of others who may have just sat by watching it. Somewhere between everyone's personal truths sits the actual truth.

Personal truths consist of focusing only on what one believes to be the correct information, while willfully ignoring other details thinking they are minor, but in reality could hold vital insight to situations on how it developed, why it happened and should it have happened, or is it really worth discussing at all.
As well, we have yet to see solid and coherent reason why the community is warranted to be compared to a very small group that pushes buttons and ruffle feathers to get a rise out of people.

Screen shots, and send it via the website. That tends to do the trick the best.

This. I suggest there is more to the story. Especially since we are up to 4 in one week. After 6 years my ignore list is empty and I have gotten my share of hate whispers in PvP. All of which I passively ignored and they quickly move on after seeing I do not have a hot head.

I enjoy getting hate whispers in PvP, I mail them a potato.

LOL. That is a great idea.

And if it's six lungs, that sounds less like a blue alien with tentacles in a jar and more like a Krogan.

On a more serious note, though, I can't say that I myself have ever had anything like this happen to me before, but I don't doubt that it's possible, especially under the current circumstances - those (all kinds of people being stuck at home with nothing to do but play), combined with the anonymity of the internet bring out the worst in people. I don't think that has anything to do with the state of the ESO community, however, lots of good people here, too. Just some idiots who probably have issues of some kind or another IRL.

I constantly report people for harassment at least in game. I get sooo many weird and straight up creep messages by the one half and the other half keeps insulting me because whatever they please.

Thats insanely annoying and it doesn't need some schoolchilds at home for that, it is often even people who at least claim to be adults.

Hate tells for no reason, overtly Racist comments (REAL RACISM) , you name it.

So people randomly selected you as a target and randomly assigned you a race so they could lash out with racism about the race they randomly picked for you? And it happened four times?

For most of us it is extremely rare we get unsolicited hate messages like this and you got 4 in a week. We are already aware that you give players unsolicited advice and they took it in a poor way even though you were very nice about it. Maybe some SS to show the actual conversation as that would be commonplace for most of us if we were truly be harassed in-game.

Follow the advice Ryan provided. Make sure to take SS though Zos will be able to tell if some of the conversations is left to make the issue look one-sided.

In addition to reporting them do not reply to them after the first harassing comment. There is no reason and nothing good can come of it.

LOL, i`ve done the same (mailed a potato) couple times to a hate whisperer with the *hugsies* as the post title. Yes, gotten some caps lock rage after that.. but, it just fuels me for more action and brings joy to PVP sessions. :)

I don't notice anything that goes on in chat. I never have it open. Antisocial? Yep. I don't group as I wouldn't expect others to deal with the high ping associated with satellite being my only viable (marginally....) connection, so I don't have to be social.

I mean giving someone polite and friendly advice in a nice way should not be something one has to avoid ever.

People should have the basic decency to, if they dont want it, at least not react like a moron.

People should also realize that advice is not always warranted or needed and that they should have the social intelligence to know when to keep their opinions to themselves. But hey 3 or 4 threads now and it seems some individuals either haven't learned this important lesson people typically learn by Middle School or are intentionally poking people that are short on the trigger to get a reaction and then reporting them for it.

    Victim blaming? Seriously?

You assume that the OP was in any kind of argument at all. And even if they were, that certainly wouldn't excuse racism.

I mean I make "racist" jokes about in game races, like making Argonian skin boots when I get the kill achievement in PvP and stuff like that :)

This was the determining factor in me deciding to not pvp.

I don't want those racist achievements. We live on a planet where racially motivated killings are a thing. These achievements are just awful.

    So are racist passives.

Seriously. Story-wise the Elder Scrolls IP has never been racist. Certainly there have been storylines which touch on or even revolve around racism. But they don't promote it. It's shown as the evil it is.

But ESO's game design is very racist and those "in-game racist" remarks are a problem. Legally I don't think they are. Fictional races aren't owed any legal protection to the best of my knowledge. But their expression and acceptance might shift some people's minds a bit towards being more accepting of real world racism.

Don't throw around that buzzword ffs. People are taking a fairly reasonable guess that there is more to the story -- as stated in the post you quoted, that is very often the case with these kind of situations. And that's ignoring the fact that OPs behavior on the forums makes it difficult for people to believe their innocence.

OP has made several threads about how people are supposedly mean to them. At least one of them was after they offered unsolicited advice, at which point I and several people told them some people may not accept said advice with a smile on their face. This isn't to say that there are no rude people in ESO. There are plenty, just like any other public space. It's your choice whether to ignore, try to defuse, or escalate confrontations.

As for racism in Elder Scrolls IP, I agree that the franchise doesn't *promote* racism, but certain parts of the lore are definitely racist, and racism weighs heavily in many TES questlines. RPing as a Dunmer making a snarky remark about making new boots off of an Argonian would be pretty much aligned with TES lore. I don't think it's useful to conflate fictional racism and actual racism, e.g. people making racist comments about real world people and/or situations.

My rule in this game is to stick to game related things when I chat, and avoid political or personal issues when talking to people I don't know well. Thus far it worked fine, I haven't really quarreled with anyone. I did berate quite a number of random people in dungeons and trials for not listening to me and messing up the mechanics. A few days ago a player was so obstinate in doing his own thing in Mazzatun HM that at the 5th or 6th wipe I told him to take a hike and stick to simpler games, like Tetris. I don't hold grudges, I just left the group, and with the next I was able to beat HM easily, even did speed run.
