Gap Closers - Then and Now

    There were changes to how gap closers work in a recent patch. They apply a 200% movement speed debuff to the target. When you're targeted by one or more gap closer abilities at a time, you cannot move, attack, or defend yourself. Often you are stuck in place until the player gap closing you connects, which leaves you open to other attacks and usually results in a death.

    Before this change, combat felt more fluid. You could apply a shield, block, dodge, or even use an offensive ability. It did not mean imminent death as it does now.

    This change, along with the nerfs to dodge, streak, and block negatively affect combat in PVP. I've spent so many days and nights playing with friends that are now deciding to leave the game because of how frustrating combat has become in the more recent patches. They could deal with the bugs, but the bugs compounded with these changes are what made up their minds.

    I've compiled some clips from before and after the 200% speed reduction was added. @ZOS_BrianWheeler and @Wrobel which of these two versions of the game would you prefer to play?

    This is frustrating as hell, let's hope ZOS take more seriously PVP and combat design, invest in it, love it, make it a jewel.
    PVP is what make games leave for ever.

    This issue is sadly adding to lag, heavy armor (so bad in PVP) and balance.

    whoever thought this was a good mechanic to include in the game needs to experience being trapped in it, again and again, til their nose bleeds.

    i thought it was a bug, until i was directed to this thread by another post.

    I have been playing Age of Wonders III until its fixed because this *** is just dumb now. Having way more fun with a game that is thoroughly developed and isn't riddled with bugs, imbalances, and lag. Ambush spammers can keep their *** ambush spam game. I don't want to play a combat game where it takes the mental capacity of a tulip to defeat any opponent, because that is not combat - its dumb.

    I'm fairly new to ESO. However, every game I play, I always get into the competitive pvp aspect of it. Just barely getting into ESO pvp. I watched the video, and frankly, I don't like either THEN or NOW. Both are terrible in their own ways when it comes to balance.

    I'm looking at your vid, watching you instantly teleport all over the map whenever someone gets close in the THEN part. I feel for all those melee players trying to get close to you to land a hit, while you can just teleport and pepper them from far away. In other games I played we would call this the get out of jail free button. Take all the risks you want and get out at the press of a button if things go sour. This sort of thing usually involves a big cost to the player doing it in. There seems to be no cost for you at all here. Totally not fun being the player on the other end of this.

    I'm not trying to bad mouth you. I'm a pvp player too, I understand that we take advantage of every little thing the game allows us to use to get an edge. However, what I'm wondering is why would the developers allow this sort of thing? All it does is create a Range>Melee advantage. This teleporting business is only a pain for melee who have to get close and aim at whoever they're hitting. Range can just shoot the teleporting person at their new location.

    As for the NOW. Yeah, I don't like this locking your character down just cuz someone is gap closing you either. I've experience this. I can understand someone channeling a spell to slow you down while his buddy gap closes. That makes sense. But just being locked down for no reason as someone is gap closing you? It doesn't make sense. Totally not fun.

    In my opinion, the gap closing lock down business should be removed. But the teleporting business should get a channel/cast time at least. Those guys charging in with their shields have 1-2 seconds before they connect. The teleporting person should have a delay before moving to their new location. Also, since it's obvious where the charger is going. I would make it so that players trying to bring down a teleporting player have some clue as to where the other guy is teleporting to next. Some lightning effect that travels to the location the teleporting player is going go to, before he gets there. Teleporters can still teleport across terrain, like rivers, while chargers can't. I think that would be pretty balanced and give a fighting chance for both sides.

    Lastly, what's the deal with that smoke screen that makes you invincible to all damage? How the hell did a skill like that make it into a pvp game?

    @EdmundTowers as far as your comments on Cin being able to blink all over in the 'then' portions, it's all moot now. Bolt Escape has since been nerfed with the removal of the cost reduction passive and the addition of an infinite stacking 50% cost increase.

    @EdmundTowers What you're seeing with blinking was related to high regen along with stacking Arch Mage with Seducer 5 piece sets and three cost reduction enchants. The nerf to Arch Mage along with the stacking cost increase of Bolt Escape, damage reduction to other players, and regen CP bugs make unlimited bolting a thing of the past.

    I don't fully agree with how they went about changing Bolt Escape costs to make sorcerers easier to catch, but I can understand how annoying it was.

    This issue just gets more and more irritating. After being locked down by two NB (one spamming Ambush and the other Lotus Fan) to the point where I could not cast or use a potion, I shut the game down for the night and played something else.

    I find myself doing this more and more. I even cleaned my carpets and my car on my days off instead of logging in for hirelings while drinking coffee like I usually do.

    This issue, along with the litany of other bugs and asinine descisions, is leading to more and more players looking for something else. We want to play ESO, but the state of the game makes that very difficult.

    So, would this be fixed enough for now by making all gap closers require a 5m minimum range, including ambush/lotus fan?

    Note that current gap closers have a 3.5m minimum range and melee range is mostly 5m.

    If you are trying to kite, you can still be charged spammed. But at least the same 2 guys can no longer lock you down if you plan to stay and fight.

    This also fixed the stupidity of crit rush, step back a tiny bit, crit rush again, repeat

    A single ability should not do all of the following:
    1. High Damage
    2. Provide Support (increase caster movement speed, heal caster, etc.)
    3. Opponent Control (stun, root, etc.)
    4. Become Unavoidable
    IMHO, no ability should do more than two of the four. No ability should do #2, #3, and #4. Any ability that does #2, #3, and #4, better have extremely low or zero damage.

    Gapclosers are disgusting.

    Remove the stun as they plan on doing, but do not ad a f*cking snare to gapclosers.
    Put minimum range on ambush & lotusfan morphs so they can't spam it at pointblank range.

    Fixed. Not as hard as it seems ZOS?

    Oh and give magicka users a rapid manouvers morph so they can't be permasnared/rooted. With the rollnerf it's a pain in the ass.
