Ok everyone, here's the scoop. Tonight, we suffered from a DDoS attack on the European megaservers. At this time, things appear to be steady, though we'll continue to monitor through the evening and will take any necessary action in the morning. Thanks for your patience while we worked through everything, we know this week has been frustrating but appreciate you sticking with us!

Any ideas on specifics @ZOS_GinaBruno ?

I noticed that UK guild mates on Virgin Media, my ISP too, were completely unaffected last night.

we just watched the guild chat, laughing at everyone else appearing then disappearing mid-sentence :D

I didn't actually have any internet at all last night (Virgin Media) but I assume that was something to do with them digging up the road at 9pm at night rather than anything more sinister.

Well I hope things are calmer over the weekend anyway and that you find and punish the bunch of (possible) players of some lesser MMO who thought it was fun to mess things up for everyone else.

DDoS attack... Didn't honestly expect that

Given the amount of former players bearing grudges at Zenimax, some of us are only surprised that it took this long for something like that to happen...

A DDoS attack? Do you guys know from where? That is slightly disconcerning.

It may be just a rumor, but I heard it originated from Mark Jacob's office.
The question is, why is he doing that? Marketing stunt, okay, but why one needs to lag ESO, which can lag just fine on its own?

Fun facts about the general "DDoS for Hire" market:
    • Once a target, always a target: 20 percent of websites are attacked more than five times
    • DDoS attacks can last a long time: While 71 percent of all network layer attacks last under three hours, more than 20 percent last more than five days
    • Some attacks are exceptionally long: The longest attack was 64 days
    • DDoS for hire is more readily available than ever: Botnet-for-hire fingerprints are on roughly 40 percent of all attacks
    • Five countries create most DDoS botnet traffic: 56 percent of DDoS bot traffic emerged from China, Vietnam, US, Brazil and Thailand

And you can rent-a-botnet for $40....

I still don't understand the motivation behind these attacks. Money? Thrill? Yeah, I can do it!?

    Motivation?

Commercial blackmail, holding a grudge, action by competitor, action by goldsellers if previous action was taken against them, someone just seeing if they can etc.

All the reasons you can think of that someone might not like a particular company or game or group of players or commercial decision.

To be honest some people are just nuts also.

It could be that, it could be someone with a grudge against Zenimax, it could be someone on an anticapitalistic crusade (although it's doubtful someone would single out just Zenimax for that....), it could be lots of things

But we shall not yield to blackamailing! ESO players, veterans of debilitating glitches, are way too hardened by the usual lag to be hurt by the DDOS lag, most can not even tell the difference!
Let's keep playing. I, for one, even came to like The Lag, because it in many aspects improved the game. Take stun lock/unable to CC break for instance: wherease before The Lag it occured randomly, now it is consistent and effectively a new feature; hard CCs have fixed, full duration.

They can be controlled. Reaction time of banning IP causing excessive traffic can be less than minute, depends on logic. Banning whole network branches, banning proxies, banning anonymous DNSs etc. Its not the first company suffering from this. Seems other can do it. There will be collateral damage perhaps, but at least it will not ruin their business(bcs it does severe damage to it) and fun of the players.
Ofc, its not that simple and not the final measure, but it will definatelly limit desire, will and actual damage done by those who are doing it.

Even if they ban IPs and such, the connections will still reach the hardware that reject them. And use the servers bandwith. And so, severe lag.

I hardly ever get any issues on Virgin Media to be honest (maybe because I'm on the top bundle? :/ ) Can't fault the service I'm given personally.

Same here. I used to have a lot of problems with them in the old ntl days but it's fine these days. Mind you, I'm still using the old-style ntl 250 modem rather than the unreliable super hub which probably accounts for it! I could get a faster speed but don't need it and I'm very much of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school. I didn't have any performance problems on the PC EU server last evening, and haven't any significant issues at all since launch (although I don't PvP).
