ZOS, Massive Spike in Ping/LAG in Recent Days - What Gives?

They are aware of the problem, if they wanted to fix it immediately, they would have.

Zenimax just doesn’t see this as an emergency maintenance problem.

So after a third of the playerbase quits the game, they’ll go in and do some behind the scene reversions and fix the random lag spiking.

ZOS turned the server off and back on again... what else do you want?

PS: How is T&L going? I heard the combat was very janky.

Is ZoS currently taking any fundamental action to address this issue? Can it be fixed or not, or do they even know the cause? Or are they working hard to address it now?
Is it a server-side problem, or are we under DDoS attack? Or is it both?
I would love to hear back from some kind of developer. Whether it be hope or despair.

ZOS_Kevin made an annoucement a few days ago that they were working on this but there hasn't been an update yet. There has been no mention of any DDoS attacks.

Lmao! The good ole’ “Have you reset your router?”
    That’s a classic for sure.

Combat’s great btw, no problems for me. At first I thought tab target would be a problem, but it’s much better for large scale PvP, as players can’t just walk through their teammates like ESO and LoS all of your damage. Not to mention, having auto basic attacks feels a lot more natural, as less focus on LAs, in turn, means more focus on the skill-based combat.

My only problem with T&L, which I imagine will be worse when Early Access ends, is the fact that the game has a multitude of servers like WoW, where if you pick a different one from your friend, you would need to make an entirely new character to play with them, or pay for a server transfer.

That being said, no other complaints. Game feels amazing, story is phenomenal, graphics are leagues ahead, and I haven’t been this excited to get on to play a game in a very long time.

Just wish I could recapture that feeling on ESO but until the game gets a massive overhaul, it’s unlikely, and that’s assuming I can convince my friends to forgive them for all of the horrible patches we’ve had to endure, like this most recent one, the 30fps menus, the block bug, the second block bug, the double jewelry enchants plaguing PvP, the broken Arcanist ultimate/mythic reflect bug, ect… and that’s just over the course of a year or two.

I admire your courage for actively participating in this event. I've given up. When I finally successfully login after the 10th attempt, I just do the fastest Endeavors and logout, if I have not already been booted.

Personally didn't see such a bad connectivity situation since 2020's anniversary, but back then I think the population was at its historical peak.

Connectivity has been so bad lately - disconnects, lag spikes, multiple loading screens when porting into a new zone, these happen every time I play ESO now. Never use to be like this.

Just this morning, I had a disconnect when trying to do the intro scribing quest, only to log on again, get back into the game and have it become unresponsive to inputs, and finally disconnected again... this time with a 7+ min login queue, so I guess the servers dropped more than just me the second time around.

What happened to the server upgrades, quality of life, etc? This really needs to be addressed, wasn't like this earlier in the year.

"Good" to know it hasn't just been me experiencing lag spikes where you press buttons 50 times over before anything happens.
  • stonelisticub17_ESO
I've been a paying member since Jan 2014. Unfortunately, due to the server lag, I am unable to enjoy my playtime; therefore, I have decided to cancel my subscription. Once, the lag is fixed on the ZOS server side of things, I will renew my sub. ZOS please release an official statement as for why this issue is happening to the players followed by a fix.

I got disconnected seven times in less than an hour just now. Our whole group crashed at the same time and got login queues.
This game has become near unplayable trash since the event started. Were the Cyrodiil hamsters moved to a PvE server to accommodate the event?

last nights vLC runs were barely playable.

    rubberbanding: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sFe1o0MNpwApzuDA0R9QjtWqyuJ_Hix9/view?usp=sharing

rubberbanding that just freezes, and boots me from server:

after getting booted from server i get this message:

then try to relog in multiple times but get:
    u0kz2eezjuca.png

eventually i can get on again, but rubberbanding persisted in that vLC run.

Last night, 2:30 AM CST I just popped on to pick up nodes. Lag was so back chopping wood took 12 strikes. collecting other nodes took as much time, or had to be attempted multiple times.

Was not exactly a High population time.

quit playing after about 45 minutes.

This is exactly what has been happening to me for over 5 months now.

This needs to be elevated more than it is @ZOS_Kevin. Top of backlog priority.

As for the Error 103.. if you try to log in too quick you will get that error. If you're in a group have your members tell you,. if possible, when you're offline (assuming you're in coms) and then try to log in. If you log in before you drop from the game it will give you that error.

Rule of thumb... wait 60 seconds before trying to log back in and usually you'll be okay.

This game is super janky when it comes to connection stuff.

For many many years before PC/EU was a massive source of problems, and the infamous "R.I.P PC EU" thread with 100+ pages was closed and removed several times.

Funny, but nowadays PC/NA is the source of technical issues (and considering previous PC/EU experience - they are for years).
Here is my tracert and considerations:

    a5VWzCN.png

    First: Akamai.com is overloaded.
i connect from another side of the pool, so the fact transatlantic connection loses 10%+ of packets is sad

Second: load balancers used by Zeni, are probably too few and too cheap (by this i mean they do not have enough buffers for the sheer amount of incoming packets), so the connections are often lost

the good idea is to add more IP addresses for ESO servers and add more load balancers (if they, but not the lack of content servers are the source of frequent disconnections) and add more content-servicing servers (if they are too few to handle the load).

Honestly, we don't know the architecture Zeni is using, but, anyway, the packet losses mean either faulty NICs or insufficient buffers. When packets and subsequent retransmissions are lost "in the wires", the connection breaks (and later have troubles to be re-established).

Please locate and fix the issues, @ZOS

But for real... everyone is basically saying the same thing as this post right here. Zos knows this is the issue. Now is it something they throw money at and fix or just continue to build the technical debt is up to them.

It just occurred to me... what if it's the scribing system? What if the server can't handle all the customizations? What if it's all too much for it to handle? Did the scribing system single handedly kill ESO?

Unfortunately, the problem will sort itself out eventually by people moving on to less problematic games. Only the hardcore players will continue suffering through continually worsening performance.

This lag/rubberbanding/disconnection dysfunction was happening well before Gold Road dropped.

the majority of performance issues this year started about the same time as the PTS for scribing, including the planemeld incident that merged the PTS and live servers. theres been peaks and valleys with performance issues, but issues highlighted in this thread became really visible starting around april 2024 and beginning of may was when it was widespread hitting PVE.

is it directly scribings fault? idk, people seem to be piecing together that akamai and networking issues seem to be a large problem and likely at fault. but its possibly related at the very least. the game can barely handle the skill lines we already have, now add 5000 variations of skills (idk the actual number, I know it was a lot though and theyre adding more to it). depending on how its coded, each scribing skill could be bogging down excessive resources by comparison to normal skill morphs.

Not completely accurate. This is just when the bleed of these issues into overland became impossible to ignore.
I've also empirically noted that in there's more than 3 akamai jumps in your trace your performance will be dog poo.

Nothing says fun like being in vLC and having your main tank, both healers, and a couple of DPS disconnect at the same time while the boss is at 43% health. Our off tank was holding both the Orphic Shattered Shard and Xoryn, while we just kept throwing any and every synergy their way, while also trying not to push the boss to the next mirror phase. We've been farming since the event started and have not completed a single run without having several people DC at some point or another. Yay!

I just logged in tonight, 9/28 at 11pm EST on PCNA. The whole game is having frame rate loss, lagging, and parts of the environment aren’t even spawning correctly then the game has to go into a loading screen. [snip] happened?!?
