No more jewelry grains?

Twitch stream said ZOS is reworking how jewelry crafting works. No more grains, only plating.

But how will that affect furnishings that take a grain? Only one I can think of is a Leyawiin bookcase which requires a zircon grain (not a plating), which I always thought was strange, but… is that gonna be reworked to require a plating instead? Otherwise, it will be rendered uncraftable.

if it's switched from grains to plating, it'll likely be the same as the other crafting skill lines:

    1. you'll probably get a hireling ability.
    2. the cost of upgrading will probably increase to the same levels as other crafting skill lines. That is, 8 gold mats for 100% success.
    3. Mats will be will be much easier to obtain. The cost of mats will go down. furnishings that cost grains will cost mats instead. It won't be much of an issue with cost since mat costs should decrease

Very interesting move on their part.
I wonder if they plan to make jewelry crafting part of the base game too, like the other crafting disciplines?

Okay but during the conversion to ancient to plating, are grains going to be counted as equal to platings? So should I buy all the grains and make a fortune when they are converted to platings? Help me understand, devs.

Too late, everyone has been taking the grains and such off the trader.

But yes, grains will become Platings.

The Ancient Grains will be converted to Platings on a 1:1 ratio, while the Ancient Platings will be converted to Platings on a 1:10 ratio.

That means that you probably want to wait until Update 40 to upgrade jewelry. For instance, right now it takes 4 Chromium Platings (40 Chromium Dust) to upgrade to Legendary, while after Update 40, it will take 8 Chromium Platings (the equivalent now of 8 Chromium Dust). Prices at The Golden will also be adjusted, so it's best not to buy from there until Update 40, either.

I wouldn't buy grains or platings right now because they are very expensive to get now, and they'll be worth less per unit after the launch of Update 40.

I agree with this assessment. People think grains being converted to platings mean they will be more valuable after the conversion but the reality is: platings are being converted to grains!! HUGE nerf to value.

It's not really a nerf. It's a rebalance, and if you have 600 platings now you will have 6000 after the change so you will not lose what you've already farmed in terms of raw materials gained.

The price will drop dramatically though which is a very very good thing.

Btw anyone buying grains now you're not making a good fiscal decision. I wouldn't transact them at all right now.

Maybe I am just not seeing the writing on the wall, but does buying any of these grains and holding them really change the value compared to plates?

    10 old grain -> 10 new plates
    10 old grain -> 1 old plate -> 10 new plates

It would be the exact same??

What matters is, how much of material you need to make one upgrade, how many upgrades you need per build and how accessible are materials.
Drops rate for all gold upgrades from writs (main source of gold upgrade material) is ~25%
    v7qqwqa0j3zj.png

Today, to upgrade one piece of jewelry you need 160 writs done (1 grain is awarded every 4 writs on average, you need 10 grains for one plating, you need 4 platings total).
After update, you will need 32 writs to upgrade one piece of jewelry (1 plating is awarded every 4 writs on average, you need 8 platings total).
That is 5 times less effort needed for one piece.

Also factor in how many pieces you need per build. People definitely want their staves and bows golded for build, but you need 2 wooden pieces per build at best, sometimes even 0. Clothing pieces you need up to 7, and it's usually 7 except for tanks that are mostly heavy and pvp builds that typically involve at least some heavy pieces, both are in minority anyway. You need 3 jewelry pieces per build at best, bust mythics are already golden, most of perfected jewelry is reconstructed already in gold. Platings will be coming at the same rate from writs as Rosin or Wax, but demand won't be on the same level as Wax, above Rosin, somewhat close to Temper.

It looks like 4 old plates (now) become 40 new plates (after U40)

4 old plates (now) can upgrade 1 ring.

8 new plates (after U40) are required to upgrade 1 ring.

So after U40 your 4 old plates can upgrade 5 rings. Do I misunderstand?

I think I get how the conversion rate will work, but I keep asking myself "why?"
Why are they twiddling with jewelry mats in the first place?
Is it to try and force price adjustments to more reasonable rates? That's the only reason I can think of.

But once the new system becomes the norm, won't pricing for platings just start climbing back to where they are now?

I mean, ok we get rid of "grains" and the cost to gold a ring goes from 4 platings to 8 "new" platings.
But the value or desirability of having gold jewelry isn't going to change, nor will its stats.

So I'd expect eventually prices will go right back up again?

No easy way to tell. Current prices are so supply constrained that it's hard to predict where prices will go. On the one hand the amount needed for an upgrade is lower, so if everyone were currently golding out jewelry then yes, because supply will be 5 times higher in terms of "one item upgrade." But many people don't upgrade to gold jewelry because of the high price, so there will definitely be more demand as accessibility increases. If that increased demand is high enough then prices will actually increase, if it isn't then they might decrease.

Maybe. Golding jewelry isn't any more desirable than body, yet wax or alloy aren't worth nearly as much. Current prices are high because of low supply not because everyone is willing to pay that much for gold jewelry. In any case, regardless of economy stuff, this is a gameplay benefit since it takes less grind to make a gold jewelry item if you farm yourself, which makes things more accessible.

Well at least it will be reasonable for more players. For example, you get gold jewelry in cyro and you decon 1 or 2 pieces you have a plating, vs taking 15 or more. All the trial jewelry too, the decon will go further.

Players can actually obtain these themselves now. Even playing a few tribute games a day, and you will get 1-2 a week. I might mine a 100 or so jewelry nodes every week or so, because what you get is actually worthwhile. I never bothered mining before .... seriously 200-300 ores for 1 grain. Up to 3000 for a plating. That's not reasonable. Mostly bots are mining that many, and we know who runs those. Now you will get a plating from that effort.

    Great update.

    Simply put:

1 grain currently will equal 1 plating after patch.
1 plating currently will equal 10 platings after patch.

Currently to upgrade 1 piece of jewelry it costs 4 platings (assuming maxed out passive) which is the equivalent to 40 grains. After the patch it will cost 8 platings (assuming max out passive) but that will be the equivalent to the current 8 grains.

TL//DR: The cost to upgrade jewelry to gold after the patch will be about 80% cheaper than it currently is.

As for prices for jewelry, they will go down a lot in the short term, they might bounce back a bit, but won't be back to their current prices. You will be getting platings as commonly as you do rosin/tempering alloy/dreugh wax.

At most the price will settle somewhere between rosin and tempering, rosin at most is 16 to max out gear for a build, tempering is anywhere from 8 (one 2h) to a full load out (50+ for heavy armor + 1h) but generally closer to 24-32 temperings (max 1 heavy piece + weapons), platings will be a flat 24 per build (3 jewelry).

Gold jewelry itself might stay somewhat high for a while since it will still be fairly rare to get for a while, but it will drop as well.

Yeah, I have a fairly large stack of them.

I also didn't see or hear anything about what will change to existing writs although Rich mentioned the writs being looked at. I have a pile of purple (200+ vouchers) and a few gold (600+ vouchers) writs and am wondering if I am best to do them now or after the update.

I figure if 1 plating now converts to 10 with the update, doing the gold ones now uses 4 platings, but those 4 platings would convert to 40 after the update. Doing the gold writ after the update would need 8 platings, so I would still have 32 platings left, which would put me in front if I waited until after the update.

This is all good if the value of the writ stays the same, but not if it is diminished. Maybe the PTS patch notes will tell us more on Monday.

If you have lots of Jewelry mats or will have after the change goes live, save any Purple or Gold master writs till after as I believe you would have more mats required, at least according to planned conversion.
