Why is it so hard for people to support games they play for hours upon hours each day/week/month?

Even WoW players complain and get angry when Blizzard adds in unique things to the in-game shop. Same with every game. You guys want them to bring out new content, right? Well that takes time, and it takes money. If they don't charge a monthly fee and the majority of people play for free then how do you expect them to pay their devs? They offer alternate ways to make money.

I do pay money to support the game, but they keep releasing stuff like Crown Crates that make me think they don't think I am spending enough. I have ESO Plus and purchase Crowns, some of them for full price. I own a lot of costumes, pets, mounts, hair, and I purchased DLC. I pay them, but it does no good; seems to me that they just ask for more.

I would much prefer to have a $15/month sub then have the Crown Store. Hell, I'd pay $20/month to get rid of the Crown Store. But of course ZOS makes more money with this system so they will keep it and I am sure many people have already spent hundreds of dollars buying multiple crates so it's only going to get worse from here.

At the end of the day though if it helps keep ESO up and running and produce more content for us then it's a necessary evil, I suppose. It's not like ESO is the only game that does this. We just have to come to terms that MMO's are in a current style where it's F2P or B2P with obnoxious cash shops to sustain it.

I agree with almost everything that you say. I happily paid the subscription before Tamriel Unlimited. This isn't a necessary evil, they are a ingenious product of psychology. This game wasn't making choices before this addition that a game in trouble makes. I played Warhammer Online before it was shut down, that game was one obviously in trouble. Games do these things to increase profits massively in a cheap way.

I hope these lead to more more playable content, but I haven't seen that happen in any other game and don't expect it here. If this is the way MMO's are going from now on, this will be my last one.

I just read an interview on a gaming site with ZOS. Evidently the early numbers on crates are so good, they're gonna be able to push out some actual gaming content for the first time in years!

I never thought I'd buy any Crown Crates, but having left for a few months, coming back I saw the Storm Atronach Senche and since many of my characters have a 'storm' theme, I really wanted it... and the Senche is the only mount that I like because it runs quietly and doesn't make annoying sounds.

I bought a 15 pack, and got nothing that I really wanted/needed, ended up with only 73 Gems after trading in consumables. Since I started, I figured I'd end up having to wrack up Crates until I had enough Gems to just outright buy the Senche- especially considering there are several other Atronach mounts possible- and I've seen mostly Guar and Camel Atronachs running around, very few of the others, including Senche. So I bought my second batch of 15 packs, and what should appear after opening my fifth crate in the second pack, the Storm Atronach Senche!! ;) Normally RNG is not my friend, but I'm happy with the results. Some people might not think spending 10,000 Crown was worth the price, but I got a few other things- including the Storm Aura and Storm Transformation momentos, a few XP Scrolls, and a couple other costumes that may or may not be useful later.

I have been feeling this way, as well. I am not liking the direction that the MMO industry is going.

I am perfectly fine with paying for services, expansions to the game, and even cosmetic things that extend the game, but not the game play. I do not like feeling like I am a walking wallet, or some toy for the studio executives to play with.

I definitely don't want my success in the game to be related to how much I spend in the game, or how savvy I am at spending money on the game to purchase the right things.

This is the direction that a lot of studios want to go, and it is unfortunate that there are players that not only contribute to this, but cheer them on.

I feel that ZOS and Bethesda are all fine with the walking wallet and toying with us. The Crown Crates are nothing but them playing mind games with the players, in the name of fun. Deliberate inconvenience is a way to remind us that we should be spending money, not gold or time, on this game.

I like ESO. I have spent a stunning portion of my life, and money, playing this game since March 2014. That does not change the fact that, if this game cannot earn money on its own merits, it should simply close down, and not be extended through cash store tricks and traps. I do not feel that giving money to them simply so that the game can continue is a worthy use of money, if the game cannot earn that money without resorting to cash store gimmicks.

Nothing in those boxes is game breaking if you don't get it. They are not going pay-to-win. Stop complaining and start supporting the game.

Supporting a game and supporting gamble boxes where the odds are never published, the items are never available for direct purchase, and where the revenue may not even flow back to develop new playable content is not the same.

As someone else pointed out, ZOS / ESO has already failed like many other MMOs by being unable to provide a game that is good enough on its own to convince enough players to support it by paying a monthly subscription. .

WoW and FFXIV are the only two MMOs I know that have been able to do so, and they both continue to offer a subscription only model with paid expansions, and continue to develop and release new content (and large amounts of it) year after year.

So while players may complain about mounts being sold in the WoW store, they still get large content patches and paid expansions, and nothing is locked inside a gamble box designed to fleece as much money from players as possible.

Sadly ESO feels like it is headed in the same direction as SWTOR, where just about anything new added to the game is released only in gamble boxes, while very little new content is added and balance / bugs are given abysmal support.

Same here. I mean, why spend money for aesthetic items if you can’t stay logged in long enough because the game is broken. Stop buying the things until they fix it. Only logical solution.

Because it's just ranting, there's been plenty of anti-Crate threads since then, and this is a necropost?

    Hello,
This thread is from a long time ago and seems to have run its course. Because of this, we have decided to close this thread.
