Why is this game getting so much hate?

I agree that people only vent about negatives, I mean I think the alchemy systems sucks (my favourite craft in other TES games), in both use (via the crappy quick slot mechanic) and craft (18 reagents is just dismal given the 100+ in other TES games). BUT I still love the game and had some of the most fun I have had in it last night before the maintenance stopped us in a 3 friend group +1 random doing group dungeons.

But I doubt I ever be spurred to make a thread about that, the Alchemy on the other hand, has had many a rant by me on a few threads.

The game is not without its faults, but if you are going to unsub due to an issue here and there outweighing the vastness of the game, then I could not care any less and good riddance. Don't bother posting goodbuy.

I am sure now, the main problem with ESO, and I am not saying they have a lot to fix, but they are fixing it.

The main problem is that the player who bought this product did not bother to read what type if MMO it is. What key Features there are. I am not saying you need to research everything (Like dorks like me do), but there have been way to many who complains over things that ESO never informed about.

To give you a few examples what I am talking about. And ALL of these points are answered by Zenimax.

    1. ESO is not skyrim online
    2. ESO is not wow
    3. ESO main features are mainy. Levels is one of them, but there are many just as important as level.

My base of this conclution is way to many people saying this game sucks, they going back to WoW, or wait for Wildstar. Eh.....A player who enjoys WoW, is VERY unlikely to have ANY interest in ESO.

YES, there are many problems ESO is working on. But they are working on them, fixing em, and have a short - medium and long term plan they have published.

ESO is a NEW type of MMO. For those who like fast and easy......you bought the wrong game....

    You really have no idea.

It's not about skyrim online, wow, or features. Unless, of course, you consider:
    • 50% of classes to be useless end game,
    • stamina builds being vastly inferior to magicka builds,
    • weeks to fix progress halting bugs,
    • system damaging memory leaks,
    • 301 errors,
    • gamebreaking skills ignored,
    • extreme ability imbalance,
    • client-side trust,
    • 1 viable armor type
    • "accidentally" deleted pvp campaign,
    • staff ftw,
    • questing grindfest
    features.

So yeah, if the above are features and I somehow missed that on the box, my bad.

I have been.. lurking the forums since 1.1.2 dropped,
well lurking isn't playing, so you haven't seen first hand how they dropped the ball. Ninja nerfs and bad design decisions is what is causing the hate.
Anyone who is currently dropping subscriptions because the game isn't perfect..
Only a few asked or expected perfect, but we have a right to expect better quality then what we received.

Because that's the attitude that's killing games,
This I strongly disagree, its these companies which see a sub based mmo as a continuous revenue stream for which they feel they can ship beta level code.
That is what is killing the games, why on earth should we as customers pay to test the game? The customers have a right to be upset and make recommendations to their friends / coworkers /people on the street and say to avoid a bad product.
Why are you guys complaining about that?
    1. quest bugs and freezes,
    2. rollbacks
    3. update process fiasco where it deleted the manifest (reinstall or copy from friend was needed)
    4. all the bots got in
    5. dupe exploit
    6. xp exploits
    7. ninja nerfs
    8. passives which only worked to before you died
    9. 2/4 currently broken classes
    10. DK-Vamp fiasco 2014
    11. Ww
    12. customer service not responding
    13. turning off the wrong mega server!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    14. recipes that don't work
    15. loot nerfs
    16. boss nerfs
    17. vr grind levels
    18. design logic ( concepts that allows my horse to have oats every day but only my retainer can find them)
    19. relog lootable item farming
    20. login issues
    21. account names visible to all
    22. guild AH design
    23. lack of any real immersion
    24. the only god knows what else

    simple answers..
The dev team puts out patches that wind up breaking more things that it fixes...that deserves some hate for their incompetence...
The game is full of bugs with more introduced every patch...that deserves some hate
Customer service is stuck between a rock and a hard place as the devs are clueless trying to fix crap (most of their fixes fail) despite their ineptness customer service still has to deal with the consumer but ZOS CS reps now hide.

Long answer..the game is beautiful and a brilliant idea, however for a million reasons ZOS and their inability to communicate, develop, problem solve, and inspire any confidence in their company has created a very dissatisfied yet hopeful (cause we love Elder scrolls) player base.

Since calling someone a fanboi must be offensive and rule breaking, I won't call you that but I will say you are wrong and need to stop with your nonsensical banter about how good this game is. Are you on drugs?

This thread received more replies than I ever thought it would! I will go through every reply and compile a reply later on, I feel as if most of the posts will express the same opinion, but each post will be worded differently and has it's own appeal. :)

Thanks for all the comments and such!

Okay, haven't read all the comments, although I'm sure I'll be repeating alot of stuff.

Overall, I enjoy the game. Make that I enjoy the Pre-VR game. I have a variety of characters with their own quirks and styles. Obviously that's a given, considering they're different characters.

I have a Nightblade, which is currently VR2 (probably a couple kills away from VR3) I've had absolutely no problems with solo content there, but I'm sure that'll change soon. More on that to come.

I have a Sorcerer, which is currently steamrolling through the content. Ranged Magicka users are definitely much easier to play. Okay, that's a given. I get beat up, but it's a rarity.

I haven't touched my Deathknight yet. It's level 7 right now. So can't really give an opinion there.... yet.

My Templar .. my oh my.. my templar. Currently VR6. VR6 since 1.1.1 dropped. Through 1-50, was slow and steady. I took a beating, but kept on chuggin' along. But once I hit VR6, I logged out for the night, as I was still chuggin' along Slowly but surely... Then 1.1.1 happened, and my templar became completely unplayable for me. Right now, I'm just waiting to get some gold together (on one of my lower level toons) because I'm completely unable to progress through my questlines and achieve a profit, and have no desire to play my Templar in its current form.

Before you throw out the L2P BS, I know I'm not god's gift to ESO. I know I'm probably a mediocre player at best, but your average Joe who isn't min-max ing should be able to still progress, through so-called SOLO content.

I can definitely see where the hate is coming from. This is a MMO, which means it's everchanging. There will be bugs. There will be hiccups, and OMGWTFBBQDEV moments. But that's to be expected with a MMO.

However, my problem, is that with the linear questlines, which push you to your new areas, and allow you to progress, should NEVER be bugged. Because that is going to draw the most hate.

In other MMO's if a quest is bugged, whatever, because you can just move on to the next zone. In ESO, you will HAVE to at some point progress through a quest to continue. It'd be akin to having an amusement park say in order to get onto the new awesome ride, you *HAVE* to participate in all the others. But the kicker would be that the ride right before the awesome one is busted, but still you have to wait in THAT line until they get it up and running again.

The way ESO is set up with skills and whatnot is awesome in my opinion. The idea of it anyway. Play what you want, how you want. You don't have to be Gandalf in a robe with a staff. You can be a badass battlemage in full heavy, and 'magetank' or whatever the hell you want. I like that idea...

...except the reality is seeming more like "Play whatever you want.. Pre-50" After that it's more like "play whatever you want, as long as you weild a staff" and stay out of a mob's face.

So yeah, I totally see the hate. I also can totally see why people will leave, and take their money with them. It doesn't make a person any less of a gamer to go on hiatus until ZOS puts out what is perceived as a better game.

I wouldn't toss money at a bad product if I didn't feel there was any redemption. For right now, I still see possibilities, as long as ZOS can figure out WTF needs done.

So yeah, I've seen the gamebreaking bugs. I've seen the glass ceiling of some classes/builds. And quite honestly, one thing I haven't seen, is a very appreciative ZOS acknowledging the issues, and letting us know of an impending fix.

While I'm sure most people hit VR1 and go straight to Craglorn, it still is very disheartening to see populated cities up through coldharbour, then once VR1 comes around, it's a ghost town. In VR Zones, I rarely see anyone running about. The MMO portion seems to end as soon as coldharbour passes. I've never seen zones so empty so soon after release.

My main guild is small, probably 20 people in total. All experienced gamers, dating back to games like DAOC, UO, EQ. And when there's only 3-4 people who log in a couple times a week, that's telling me something. Some have already quit. I'm the only schmoe that still logs in daily.

But the hate for this game is abnormally strong. Not only is there hate from it's own subs, theres hate from various game reviewers like Gamespot. Theres even more hate from various youtube personalities such as Shoddycast (Who by the way got a sub from the Bethesda themselves!)

Look,i want to like this game,i really am trying but when you reach veteran rank, there is just something seriously wrong with this game and i just cannot put my finger to it!

There was someone in an earlier post that mention perhaps the PC release was just to test things. So ZOE could have a great release on the Console and therefore be the FIRST to launch a console MMO. With all the accolades about how polished and refined the console release was to be the first of it kind.

If that were true Just WOW what a slap in the face to everyone that bought any edition for the PC.

and sometimes that thought does look like it makes sense.

TESO isn't going to be the First console MMO, as far as I know, Final Fantasy 14 has already beaten them to it.

NCsoft anti-marketing campaign. Billions at stake, and hating works.

Beyond that ESO launched with far to many bugs.

NCSoft is the devil ---ask any City of Heroes Player...wait I take that back ask any City of Heroes PVP player... lol

honestly though there do seem to be some basic bugs that really break the game play - the targeting bug when there are non combatant npcs in the same range as a foe is a bear.....

I think this MMO is awesome. There is no grind, none forces you to kill everything, I actually have free time in my life for my other hobbies, the graphic is my style, the quests are funny and entertaining, the mechanics are unique. I started to play 6 months later because I was aware of bugs of a new released MMO, so with almost no bugs now, I see no problem with that.
It just still seems like half done - but again it is something you can expect with a little try to understand as long as you can see the company is doing their best and I think the team of ESO is just amazing.

One of the reasons I saw in other MMO quite often was players of WoW - they do complain a lot. They have done the new expansion there and they play some other MMOs just because they have nothing else to play. Just because they are bored. And usually they dont like that MMO, because it is not like their favourite game - they will never be fans of ESO, they will never bring anything new, they will just point out what is not like in WoW in better way, in worse they will just spit dirt on that game.
I just hope devs will not listen to them - or this MMO will became another clone of WoW :(
