No Necromancer Class for Elsweyr!

Disclaimer: I know this opinion is unpopular and I know that this has been the most requested class in the game since launch, even over the Warden which was datamined before the game was launched.

However, I must STRONGLY disagree with the notion of tying the Necromancer Class in with Elsweyr.

Reason One: Necromancers have NO place with the Knahaten Flu!

The Knahaten Flu was a disease with an very high mortality rate, and notable supposedly caused several races to go extinct and devastate the population of Tamriel, most notably the Khajiit. Technically the Flu is still supposed to have approximately 15 years left before the disease is not longer found but in ESO's time line it is presumed that the disease is no longer a threat. The only mention of the Flu so far in the game is by visiting the past with Shazah in Reaper's March during one of the final quests in the zone.

It is suspected that the Elsweyr DLC's main quest line will be dealing with the aftermath of this plague. With a disease so devastating, second only to the Thrassian Plague, Necromancers looking to reap from all the death would most definitely be seen with extreme prejudices, even more so than usual. So I wonder how a Necromancer player is supposed to go through Elsweyr, supposedly helping with a plague so fresh in the survivors' minds.

Reason Two: Warrior Monks are common among Khajiit!

The Monk class is the second most requested class I have seen among the ESO community, along with the most requested Skill Tree of Unarmed. Warrior Monks have already been in previous games. But the biggest reason for this is simply that the Khajiit culture heavily supports the monk-class type. One of the most obvious examples of this is in Khenarthi's Roost, where several monks are being trained:

Screenshot-20190106-152220.png

If we are going to add a class, then let it be added with content that ties in!

Reason Three: Necromancers had their chance!

Manimmarco, the most powerful Necromancer in all of Tamriel history, already caused chaos with his Worm Cult. The Worm Cult was defeated, and Manimmarco is bound in Coldharbour (unless you freed him... for some reason). He won't be heard from again in 800 years! A Necromancer class would have fit well earlier on in the game.

Reason Four: Nothing Ties In!

Necromancers make sense, we already have lots of necromancer NPC's, necromancer questlines, and loads of necromancer support. Dragons do not, and it is extremely risky added them into ESO. Titans were their substitute and Titans are sufficient. However, Dragons, Necromancers and Elsweyr make no sense! There is so much rich lore with Elsweyr, the Two Moons, Lorkhaj/Lorkan, and a culture we have not yet seen in an Elder Scrolls game that we should not need to throw in Dragons and Necromancers to fluff it.

If all that was datamined is all being thrown in one package, then I'm just going to assume ZoS is throwing everything in that was requested with no regard to the content. Not that we should be surprised, ZoS has continuously thrown out pretty things with no substance, just to try to increase sales.

The Warrior Monk class would make the PERFECT choice for the Elsewyr DLC. The Necromancer, as I've seen already requested, can be permitted to a skill tree.. or wait until 2020's DLC where it can be tied in a bit better with a theme that really says "necromancer" and "undead".

Its some dragons around, so ok for dungeons or trial bosses but not like common large hard to kill cliffstriders like in skyrim.
    Or 250K quest bosses :(
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Wardens had nothing to do with Vvardenfell (the Dunmer are probably the least nature loving people in Tamriel). The class and the zone are two separate, unrelated things.

It's far too late to get any changes this big made to the next release. They wouldn't have gone this far - announcing a date to reveal what it is - without having all the major elements agreed, otherwise they'd either have nothing to say in the announcement or they'd risk promising something which then gets fundamentally changed or removed and upsetting a lot of people. They may not have agreed 'details' like the names and exact functionality of all the skills for the new class or skill line or whatever it is, but there is no way they're going to scrap the overall theme and design and go back to the drawing board now.

The only reason they won't be announcing necromancers is because the datamine was a mistake (or ZOS deliberately misleading us) and they were never included in the first place.

Also, having said that they don't have to find a way for necromancy to be accepted to let players learn it. The Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild are illegal in most places and anyone identified as a member could count themselves lucky if they were only arrested, but players can join both. It's not because theft and murder is somehow ok, or even justified under certain circumstances, it's simply that in this game the player character is not necessarily a good person and can do things which are amoral, blasphemous or just plain wrong. Sometimes (not often enough IMO) we also have to face the consequences of that, but it doesn't stop everyone.

Edit: Come to think of it the Dark Brotherhood and Necromancy skills might work well together - a kind of 'choose your own minion' kit.

Y’all need to cut it out with all this Lore BS. It has no place in a game this big, especially when it’s an MMORPG. If you want lore go play those single player games.

I don't understand who you are directing this thread at. The content has already been created. The datamined text makes it clear as day, you are getting Elswyr with dragons and a necromancy class in June. Nothing will change that, it's far too late in production.

Spellcrafting was too. And the other half of the justice system.

ZOS would disagree. As would Loremaster Lawrence.

Lore is central to every TES game, and especially ESO precisely because it is so big.

I just want to not have to download a huge mess of stuff I won't buy or play.... as bandwidth is at a premium for me. I'm sure that's not going to happen.... *sigh*

Think I'll be among the missing around here until y'all get over the datamine. I really hate that.... Unfortunately, I clicked on a thread absentmindedly and half-asleep this morning.

No unseeing it now. See y'all in the spring maybe.

Yes it is. There is a quest where you interact with one of the races that went extinct. The quest in Reaper's March allows you to actually see the Flu though.

I don't accept "because they made inconsistent errors before, it's okay now".

Wardens were tied in with the far less popular choice of making the entire animal companion tree specific to one region, a region where Wardens wouldn't be popular anyway.

I'm just a little dubious of the Necromancer icon being for a class, it's colored like the DLC releases, making me suspect this is going to be a DLC release, rather than a new class.

I agree. I just believe there is a time and place for things. Necromancer would've gone great with Dragon Bones DLC. Would go great with another DLC centering around Necromancy; I just believe there is a much better choice with the Elsweyr Expansion.

I'm all for asking for stuff you wanna see, but if you think they will scrap a planned class or skill line and throw a new one together in the next few months you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Personally, I'd want neither a necromancer class or monk class, but I'll see where the game goes and if I'm enjoying it I'll stay along for the ride. You could keep up the fight for unarmed though, maybe they will add in next year.

Oh i dont like it either, but it has happened just because they wanted to. They release a class and a zone together (that dont fit together) just to sell copies.

Op, you're not alone. I'm not a fan of the idea at all.

Half because it shows too much favoritism to one single magic subschool. They should have brought spellcrafting instead which includes all specialist spellcrafters. A necromancer class has no place without also bringing Conjurer, Alterer, and Illusionist classes as well.

Half because every civilized NPC and guild hates necromancers and undead. It's going to be so cheesy seeing them run through town with undead minions in tow but no one batting an eye.

How do you know it won't tie in storywise, when you do not know the story?

Besides that, lets not pretend that Warden really tied in with Vvardenfell either, for beyond its presence in the promotional material, the Warden as a character class had zero effect upon the story.

Necromancers is the most requested class for a good reason, in particular because only few games ever allow you to play such a villainous archtype, and yet Elder Scrolls have always allowed for the option. For it to finally be implemented in ESO is truly awesome.

I think more weapons would also be a great addition with classes. They could do unarmed, braclets, Spears, conjurred weapons, crossbows, tombs, flails, whips. Other types of staves, talismans, charms.

More of those with the new class also gives both crowds something. Though I am personally really happy with the new class

Everyone's been assuming that, "store_necromancy_collectable.dds" must be a necromancer class, because there's nothing in the crown store other than classes.. even though the medallion is formatted like a DLC.
