Same with TSW, customer service were first canned.

As a counter-example though, Blizzard let a TON of customer service people go a few years ago, and WOW didn't go F2P.

Blizzard let go the CS reps after WoW subs peaked. The biggest difference I noticed before that RIF was the dropoff in players complaining about being hacked. The catalyst probably was the authenticator which Blizzard started using in 2008. The culture in WoW shifted from 'Blizzard let your account get hacked! Blizzard fix your security!' to 'why didn't you have an authenticator on your account?'

Anyway, just anecdotally, EU players in eso didn't post that much to the CS forums as I pointed out a while ago. Some thought that EU players mainly posted to the English forums. If that news article is true, it turns out that people in the EU aren't that into eso or at least not into eso as ZOS/Bethesda anticipated. Score one for anecdotal evidence.

As an EU player myself that selected NA population over EU (because either way we were going to be jacked with latency issues) it isn't that we are not "as into" ESO, we simply were not happy about being mislead (lied to blatantly) about getting EU stationed/supported servers to answer the latency issues. EU players , for most part, are simply not as vocal as North American players nor do a lot of us feel entitled to every little thing and just move on.

So please, do not presume to know what we think or want or are interested in.

Do you really think that ZO didn't know about the console delay until May? If the team responsible for the console port is even remotely well managed, they would have known about missing their deadline (by 6+ months, no less) at least a couple of months in advance.
Not to mention that they immediately came out with that "switch from PC to console for 20 bucks" scheme that would realistically have taken at least a couple of weeks to get pitched, analysed for feasability, and approved by management.

I don't think that no one knew. I think that HR was not made aware until very, very near the public announcement date. That kind of stuff happens quite often to prevent leaks of NDA info. Stuff is kept secret, including layoffs, until the last possible moment.

Man, I bet zenimax is wishing someone had told them that before they hired 300 people AFTER the game had already been released. I think if you send ZoS your resume with the quoted post as your cover letter, you have a good chance of being hired as the CEO. You have real vision, kid.

It's a bunch of temporary employees filling call center positions. What is the big deal? Zenimax did the smart thing and staffed up in case they needed it.

This is no different than the tens of thousands of people hired for temporary holiday positions in retail stores and laid off early so they only qualify for partial unemployment.
End the tedious inventory management game.

folks are assuming they are console reps, but we don't know that for sure.

if this story is true, it sounds like a management gaffe of hiring too many people, it happens sometimes...no one is perfect, everyone makes mistakes sometimes, that's how you learn.

Ah good ol arsenic touch....remember what trion did shortly after launch of defiance? Yea, they dumped almost everyone and some were even lead out of the building then tossed into the street by armed security guards. But no, it was all fine the fans claimed....you know as well as I do what happened after that.

Well, looks like Zeni is doing the exact same thing. Today it's CS and soon it might be actual devs (betting on that). Basically, looks like they are cutting their losses just like trion did a year ago b/c it's clear (if you play the game) that subs are down, waaaay down.

My heart goes out to those people that were let go; I hope they can find new work soon. I do suggest to those affect to not go into the gaming sector again since layoffs and firings are common since the industry is worst place of all to find a perma job.

Seriously? Doesn't concern you in the slightest that people that were expected to be on a 6-month contract were let go after 3-months?

Tells me they expected a lot more interest in the game, and it didn't pan out that way. So, they are cutting the biggest expense which is payroll. You don't go through all the trouble of recruiting, training, and hiring people for a 6 month assignment only to let them go in a few weeks unless something is drastically wrong.

Also tells me why tickets go unanswered for over a week.

They expected to do a release on two gaming consoles which got pushed back by six months. That's a whole lot of CS you don't need until that release actually occurs.

No. Temporary factory workers being laid off early after the company announced a major delay on product does not concern me. That strikes me as almost absurdly normal.
