No, seriously, resorting to hitting "lol" b/c you disagree is just silly. For one thing, it mudies when people have hit "lol" b/c you've actually made a humorous comment versus them thinking you're crazy.

A polite "disagree" would be lovely. It doesn't have to be like Topix where we get to call people names, though that would be fun, just a very nice "not loving it" button.

    Thank you.

Funny it won't let me agree to your post LOL

I've used it as a LOL option, for something I find funny, though perhaps SS for "snicker softly" would be more apt.

The disagree button would not be OK, because nobody would say why they disagree.

But yeah, Humanity is definately the source of the problems. :s

Exactly, if you disagree, then post and say why, simple manners.

Did you seriously just accuse the internet of having manners?

I remember well the trolling that happened back then, having fallen afoul of it. Or, rather them. But they could've kept it in for all I care. As long as points weren't deducted, that is. :D

No, I said we should have manners. I never actually said whether or not we do, actually most of us do, when we remember them :p

A disagree button doesn't add anything to the discussion.

It literally provides an easy out for people who can not, or would not, take the time to articulate their thoughts in a discussion.

If you disagree, you say so and post why. That is why this is a discussion board.

If you agree... then you have the agree button to prevent the same thing from being spouted over again. To lend weight to an idea already presented.

A disagree button is useless to good discussion and conversation. It makes people lazy, and ultimately provides no data to developers and community managers.

"We show five thousand people disagree with this idea."
"Did they post an alternative, or reasons why? We have to change something."

At least it can be a great motivation to keep participating in the forums, even if there is little left to play the game itself.

Here's a totally unscientific correlation between game quality and forum activity over the typical lifetime of an MMO, made up by me on the spot:
    1. Really great game = quiet forums (everyone's too busy playing and having fun)
    2. Good game = lively forums (lots of discussions on how things could/should improve)
    3. Bad game = hyperactive forums (lots of flamewars between the fanboys and the haters, each group accusing the other of being the opposite of what they perceive themselves to be) (No, I don't know what that was supposed to mean, either)
    4. Abysmal game = quiet forums (either no one is left to post, or the fanboys have won. Bringing up any issue is immediately suffocated in hardcore denial)

    Been there, seen it happen.

No, I'm not talking about ESO, if you wonder.

Most people who disagree but don't post are simply afraid to actually put any time and effort into something that might get pulled apart by others.

It is a fear. A fear of being ridiculed and mocked... Of looking foolish and even of being wrong.

But a button? It gives them a way out. An easy escape from everything they are afraid of.

Fair enough, it can be quite hard being mocked.

But as so many keep saying, telling someone that 395 people disagree with them, but not telling them why isn't helpful. We need people to give feedback, why do they disagree?, could a minor tweek save the idea?, did they just miss the joke?

Also we get too many who won't read more than a couple of sentences, who won't bother to think, and disect an idea. As you say a Disagree button gives them an easy way out, that's the problem. It's far too easy just to press a button, if they truely disagree, let them work to say so.

I will always respect someone who puts the effort in, even if I totally disagree with the idea/opinion. I don't have the same respect for someone who just ticks a box/pushes a button.

Ok, but you generally put some thought into your comments. They are...sometimes...worthy of reply :-p and expressing why we agree/disagree with your points.

But some people - like myself, I'm sure - just post nonsense or that "l2p" BS we see from time to time that doesn't demand a careful response. Just a "disagree" button. And some people troll in a not amusing way - these don't deserve a real reply. Yet a quick "disagree" would be nice. Or a glare - I personally love the idea that we could press a "-_-" button. Or a "damn, you made me read this and I'll never get my time back" button.

But, yeah, sure, I get that tons of internet people will take advantage of it - so we need the lockout, the "you cannot give this person more 'disagrees' until 10 days' or so.

Or they could make a new internet meme by producing an unrelated button that people use - like an icon of cherries or a horse or something - for the purposes of disagreeing.

Or we don't have one and we can all just continue to use lol b/c that's ambiguous and we have no other solution. I think I will now lol your post. Just for fun. Feel the pain!

I seriously don't see it that way. A disagree button is just a way to tell someone their point sucks, it wasn't worth our time to read it and, b/c of that, I didn't bother responding in greater detail - thanks a lot for getting me to waste my time reading that nonsense, etc.

I'm sure that no one on here is seriously worried about negative comments directed towards them - I mean, these forums are moderated. There are far, far worse forums that exist - and games for that matter - where fear might all too real.

But this isn't one. It's kind of nice.
