I would think that they are trying to appeal to the newer generations - with the instant gratification, the console-based design, the multi-guild joining (facebook "friends" anyone?) - and say "forget you" to the older MMORPG crowd (who tend to value things like intricate character development, puttering around with crafting and houses, loyalty to one guild)...........except that my teenagers don't care to play it, either.
This is all part of the game.

Good point: ESO politicians are busy getting their palms greased with kickbacks, so they can modify zoning charts and look the other way while signing off on dubious building permits.

As I said, it doesn't even have to be Housing. There are a million other things they could introduce for people to do except quest mill. Many ideas could be done in a week, because they already have all the assets and structure already in place.

Super Easy Idea#1: Take any one of your large castle/building assets you already have, place it in its own phase, give it a way shrine. Boom guild hall. You can choose any of your 5 guilds to go to. Doesn't even have to do anything, just a place for people to actually be able to get together as a guild. Heck, throw down a guild bank NPC while you're at it. Or don't. I don't care.

Super Easy Idea #2: Make tavern's one-phase, and enlarge them to compensate. Let players just be together in the effing tavern without having to have all people try to group and travel-to-player in order to see each other. It's an MMO. This shouldn't be hard.

Both of those, could be done in no time at all. But won't. And would have allowed me to get so much more invested in this game.

I used to do this with one of my previous guilds. Each month when I held the guild meeting we would take over the tavern. Anything from 30-50 players there at a time. We'd use a group chat channel for privacy and discuss all guild matters. It was like a guild party, great fun and very sociable.
This same idea could be done with housing if instanced, all the people of a group could rally at a players house.

I would give UO that title if it wasn't for the way people abused the housing system to make other people's lives miserable, like blocking the entrance to a cave.

So I'll agree with you on DAoC housing.

If graphics are your only priority you should go play Crisis 2 Online. It kind of plays more like a single player game, but I think you'll like it.

Some of us need substance over style. I would love for ESO to have the grouping, bosses, content, housing and class balance of this "cartoon". But it doesn't. And unfortunately for me, all that takes priority over color palette.

Kind of agree, but the theme of my OP wasn't the aesthetic appeal of WS's housing, It was the fact they had housing already. Then the amount of customisation available (similar to RIFT's housing but better). I also really liked the personal challenge thingies.
On top of that its the fact they have personal crafting tables and personal supplies.
There was a game I remember before having something like that. Oh erm... Elder... something !

I am glad for the wait as long as the time they take makes the game better I am for it, it will be our money put to use. Some of the past player housing I enjoyed was the LoTRO and EQ2 I liked both, but lets hope they can do something better with the housing in this game.

Harder to "get into" than grinding VR 1-12? Or losing group members to different phases? Or having nothing to do but quest mill? For me, the answer is no. But to each their own.

Ugh, 2 years?! It really needs to come a lot sooner - like in the next 6 months. The more reasons I have to "nest" in the game, and feel more bonded with it, the more likely I am to continue my subscription beyond 6 months.

I wish more MMO games did housing at launch - it makes such a difference in players feeling "vested" in the game (enough so to keep paying).

Where is the social function, guild function, reasons to group, reasons to do anything. Housing is just one way of providing people something to do together when they need a break from the quest mill.

Personally I find ESO ok in the social aspect, ok because its not about performance but about who you are. At least this is my impression from playing.

At other MMO´s, it is very often a measurement which comes first and afterwards you are asked about who you are and what type of individual they actually invited to the group or the guild.

That said, it would be great if they could enhance the social features of ESO. SWTOR had a social system that gave you cosmetic rewards if you grouped a lot or helped others. They had a currency for that and as higher your rank was, as more social gimmicks you could purchase.

Another aspect could be a bartering system, a player has a own shop and others could go and shop there. This would require housing however, but in general a place to meet others is currently a bit missing in towns. However, a global AH is not something I would like to see, it should really be about interaction and not buy outs and bids with strangers that for some reason offer everything from the horse to the carpet like at wow ;)
Heck, it's like the play testers never grouped at all. How did they never once run into that in pre-release? It is a single player game masquerading as an MMO. And that's not enough for some.

There was a lot of testing and many things were actually reported. I am not a Dev and can not say why specific things could not be fixed instantly, but I still think that the general issue is phasing and that ZO just didn't had enough experience with phasing in an MMO.

That said, Wow had and still has those issue´s, you want to do a quest with a friend but he cant do it as he doesn't see the quest hub at all - its a typical side effect from phasing which is done for the player and not the whole playerbase like at Sunwell in TBC which was in my opinion the right way to do phasing.

From my perspective phasing is good and bad depending on the players perspective. Good for those that usually play alone or always with the same person so that the quest progress stays in sync. Bad for those that don't exactly play together, but still want to group occasionally.

ZO said they will work on that, so that the second group will have it easier.
Yeah, gone are the days when it took weeks/months to level your character. Too many casual players and wanters all thinking they should be able to have everything in a matter of days.

I am still far from 50 and VR 12, so for me there is a lot to do. AT WS I would probably need 1 or 2 years ^^. I don't mind long climbs so to speak, but I also understand those that just cant stay focused for a few months.

At ESO stuff went wrong during release. Some players could easily get to VR 10 in a few days, just like there seem to be similar ways now as far I can tell form the forum reports. This creates a huge imbalance in an already imbalanced system.
Most Casuals don't even know about these bugs and how to abuse them, so for them the game looks incredible tough, while some sit on the final quest, level or raid and get bored.
That's why housing is integral, it gives people a sense of belonging, its 'their' little piece of the games world.

The main aspect about housing in my opinion is, that its permanent.

Items, levels or even skills will be replaced some day, so that you always hunt those and know that they will be gone once a new upgrade happens and you start from scratch again. A house however is always yours, unless you sell or burn it...
That house you can later upgrade, change the wolf pelt for a khajiit or paint your door black instead of green or build a cellar... but the house will always be yours and something you can "play" for. It kind of attaches a player to the game as you can not lose it, unlike the typical reward structure based only on items.

Nevertheless, ESO in my eyes still works much better than anything I played recently. It has issue´s no doubt and the lack of housing really confused me at first, nonetheless do they give constant updates and also respond if you ask questions (at least in my case) so I am quite confident that they are working very hard. They obviously didn't expect that housing was wanted so much and will now hopefully find a way to add it as soon as possible.

The dye feature that's coming next month is really neat, while probably not a big feature for many it is something that reminds me a lot of Ultima ;) and therefore its highly appreciated.

It wouldn't be "ahead of schedule" if they speculated 1 to 2 years, and it came in at 1 year. That would be "within" the estimated schedule.
