    Nice post Wildstar-fanboy.

This has nothing to do with ESO. Just someone who wants to show the world how great Wildstar is.

No it's about two competing products, and how the other one is offering a feature that this one is not -and should. There are some things I like better about ESO (quests, controls, crafting, voiced dialogue) but the things that I like better about Wildstar are things that ESO should have (housing, functioning PvP, ability to stay in the same phase through a quest) .

If I have to choose between buying a car with AC, mp3, power steering, or a similar car without all those features for the same price -I start asking myself why wouldn't I go with the one with more features. It highlights the fact that the other car seems unfinished now.

It doesn't make sense that WS can have a full robust housing system at launch, and it ZoS is saying that it would take them two years. If that's really the case, I hope that it's because they have even better things planned. That would be fine with me. If it's because they need to add on more end-game content for 2 years and raise the VR cap, I'll see you guys on Nexus.

Social? If they implement it like Wildstar it won't be social. Instanced housing with crafting stations and direct teleports to raids? How does that foster social behavior AT ALL?

This will be DAoC all over again where people hide out in their houses and others constantly complain that the cities are empty.

Meh housing. The only housing I cared was Everquest 2 because you could build your own table chair etc.
Damn my wife made tons of money in woodworking sellings high house stuff. And all the pets you gathered (catch them all) you could just put them in your house like a sort of grand ménagerie, and you could win stuff like wall decoration in their cards game.
And all was resizable on the fly. Yes. Even mini pets. :D
Ah and you could visit others home if set on free visit.

Yes. EQ 2 is the benchmark for player housing, no other MMO comes close.

Lol, EQ2 cant be a benchmark when it copied UO/Horizons. ;)
That's got nothing to with whether something is or isn't a benchmark.
Have you played it lately? It's depth in housing/decorating is something else.

10 years ago player housing was almost unheard of .. in 2014 many games have it and a large proportion of players want it, especially in a 'franchise' like TES with the history of this feature in the games that precede it.

Also note how Blizzard are making 'housing' an aspect of the faction war, it's not 'real' housing as such.

Um, Mr. Over 10 years ago, Anarchy online have housing, and not unheard of.
The problem was HOW to do it, since the technology then needed so solve single houses per character, or build a house in the world for all so see, creating a clogged world, more lag and more then likely abuse of people building houses in places just to annoy others.

Everquest next has housing as one of their main features. Take a look. In they current open game, they let players build the world.

Everquest for me has and still is, THE best MMORPG ever made. But the old girl is old, sadly.

Everquest Next would be interesting for me, but as soon as I read it was free-to-play, I would rather go to the dentist then play the game.

Its not just about being social (or anti-social) housing was a key TES function. I always found it nice just to pop back to my house store some gear, listen to the bard before setting off on another epic adventure.
If implemented like this it would be pretty much just the same only instead of going off solo, you would meet up with friends. (or go into PvP battle)

I'm fairly certain too that the role-play community would love housing. I keep using the word but player housing in TES has always been integral to the game.

    ;)

EDIT - Also its not the aesthetic quality of the Wildstar housing, its the customisation options. Like having your own workstations (something that TES already did, yet ESO doesn't have) ! ! !

I know their exact plan! In 2 yrs time there wont be any need for any instanced server (therefore cheaper server maintenance costs), because the number of players would fit just nicely with current available space! Brilliant stuff!

Has ANY of you who complains about no housing in ESO READ that Zenimax answered this question quite a lot before the game was released. Player housing was NOT planned to be in the game at all. They didn't say it would never be, but was NOT part of the plan.

They listened to the feedback, and have started a project around it. Even communicated to us that the idea of housing is not a NO.

Where did the timeline for 2 years come from?

Can anyone link me a confirmed comment from a ZENIMAX rep who says player housing will be in ESO, but in 2 years?

I don't care what your brothers, sister, friend or a cousin, who plays supermario, saw on a TV commercial, that a guildleader from EVE said, ESO will get player housing in 2 years.

Zenimax managers comments or official statements only. Everything else means nothing.

Investing time/gold into my house has the same holding power for me as investing in my craft. The hardest part about finally letting my UO subscription end was knowing that my houses (I had a vet account where you could own 5) were going to decay. With the reported "max exodus" of ESO players, implementing housing (provided it's not some pre-formed, boring, instanced type) sooner might be a good idea in regard to holding power.

@Cogo for your concenience, taken from page 1:

    Thank you! :)

When reading the article, you will notice he only makes an estimate, and explains very well why.

Also, quote from the article for those who still believe housing was part of the plan from the start.
"I will tell you that when we get to player housing, and I think it’s one of those things that when you have a game that’s been running a long time it’s one of those things you want to get to, it has to be something that’s done differently and done well," he said. "That’s about all I can tell you. We have no firm plans for anything on housing at this time."

The statement was done 2014-05-22, so again, they started the idea about it, but no promising on how, when and even IF.

This is a great statement, Thanks for showing me. It only shows how well Zenimax is managing ESO.

Very true, seen 'em do it.

But those buildings never seem to have any windows. I wonder if they're even insulated. I mean, any pack of monkeys can slap together a frame and four walls; as long as the materials (and whatever electricity and plumbing) is up to local standards, it's all good (and they have their own licensed guys.)

I would rather ZOS take their time, so we wind up with something a little better that that, lol.

    2 years is to long!

    Some good points made here...

If housing was a placement free for all and players could place crafting stations, that might be a bad thing. Taking players away from the city areas would not be a good thing IMO. I'm also leaning away from the housing providing any sort of fast travel....unless it's a single node wayshrine that can only port you to the nearest city wayshrine. I would just hate to funnel people away from cities by giving them everything they need at their house.

One thing I envisioned was large villages of player homes around the outskirts of cities...I just think that would be awesome to see...

Maybe the Devs could implement some sort of Housing zones. Picture 3 or 4 invisible (viewed on map when placing a home) concentric circles spanning out from a cities boundaries. The inner circle closest to the city is the cheapest zone to place housing, while the outer zone is very expensive. An approach like this would create suburb/villages and sort of foster a community. Now of course if you want your house to be way out in the wilds right by a waterfall...that is possible but the zone could cost 500k - 1mil gold (just throwing numbers out).

I want to see housing....open world sandboxed and very versitile...I hope they get it right.

Actually it's 'when we will come to player housing' not if. This implies they are going to implement it at some point. He then states they don't have any 'firm plans', so I read that like they are not even in a conceptual production state for player housing. It's pretty much on the backburner.

The one to two anniversary time frame I'd rather take in MMO time, so that's at least 2 years and probably 3. Considering how popular this feature is and it's obvious postive effect on player retention, that's too far off.

I agree with the sentiment of doing things well (and to some extent differently, but please not just for innovations sake), so I'd rather have them taking their time to do things right, but reevaluate their priorities and production roadmap and start developing housing sooner than later.

I put my houses to "public" as I believe they don't decay. In fact I went back on a nostalgic trip about 2 years ago after being away from the game since 2001 and all my houses were still intact, including my chests full of junk (I was always a hoarder which is why my backpack is always full). Ah the good old RP/PvP days when you ran from a red name (player) and killed the grey names :D

In EQ2 housing was instanced (UO learned the hard way about letting players build anywhere) but you could make your house public and set up vendors to sell stuff. That would be good if ESO could implement something similar.

Yeah, I don't normally like cartoony MMOs but I am taking a good long look at Wildstar for this and other reasons. But check their forums, they complain about all the same stuff we do here. So there is that.

Knowing Zen, if it does take 2 years before it makes an appearance, it won't actually work for another year due to bugs.

Beta and three months player base revenue and we dont have game stability, workable solution to bots and class balance.

Are you really going to spend 360 bucks to see if we might get player housing?

My recent return of a February pre-paid PS4 Imperial edition for $112.59 was the most satisfying ESO moment yet!

The abysmal lack of class balance endured since beta and no epic end game content like WoW, leaves me doubting the majority of the player base community will continue to humor a monthly fee long enough to see player housing.

Just looking at the supplied video by the OP, I have to say Wildstar looks way to cartoon like for my taste. I had enough of that from WoW. Some of the options just seem a bit overkill to. In the video the guy manipulates the size of a bed put in the house. From turning it to a trip hazard to making it too big to even see.

Why would you even want a feature like that?

I only want a few things from a house. Some place to store my crap, a potential vendor location, and a place I can make my own and be unique compared to other player's homes.

Hell, in SWG you could manipulate any item you put in your home. They could float in the air if you wanted. You want a banner hanging from the stairs, move a floating banner to the stair. You want an extra long rug? Move multiple rugs on top of each other. Want a unique flower display? Put different flowers on top of each other and see what you end up with. I use to spend days rearranging my home. The sandbox option in SWG was the only reason I kept playing after I got bored of everything else.

Creative director Paul Sage told IGN May 22nd, 2014...

Another feature often asked about is Player Housing; fans of previous entries in the series widely agree that owning property in Tamriel is a fairly integral part of the franchise, while MMO players tend to be keen to have somewhere to hang their hats, regardless of which fictional world it's in. Sadly, Sage says that while Player Housing would be nice, it's not likely to come until ESO has an anniversary or two.

"I will tell you that when we get to player housing, and I think it’s one of those things that when you have a game that’s been running a long time it’s one of those things you want to get to, it has to be something that’s done differently and done well," he said. In every beta survey I constantly harped on the merits of player housing. It is beyond me why this is such a low priority for them. Player housing is the perfect filler for those lull periods when you're waiting for new content or burnt out on PvE/PvP and need a temporary break. It is the glue that keeps subs active between high points in the game's lineage. I kept a UO sub for years just to keep my house maintained and there was a ton of time I spent playing the game just to acquire new decorations and items for my house. By comparison, I canceled my WoW sub every time I got bored or burned out on current content just to reactivate months later. So from a mathematics standpoint, UO has taken far more of my cash over the past 15 years than WoW, and the merits/benefits of player housing in this context should be obvious to Zenimax. I think I speak for a decent percentage of players who would agree that personal housing keeps you connected to the game even during those periods when you need a break from the normal gameplay. Not to mention the added benefit of a highly valuable gold sink that has permanence; a visible and tangible reward for your efforts. If the only gold sink remains mounts, bag space, and armor you toss out each time the VR rank cap increases... that cycle is going to get boring fast.

At this point, I'd rather they work on improving inventory/bank management, instead of adding player housing. As nice as having a house sounds, to me it only promotes more hoarding and mismanagement of resources and materials. Let ZEN focus on the more pressing issues, before adding any more features that might end up being broken or causing more bugs.
