How about consistency in server downtimes

They did mention it on the launcher about 30 mins before the server was taken off line I think.

Yeah, it was there on the launcher when I booted up. It induced lots of swearing and loading alts for research :D. Altoholic? Me? :D

Well most people are already logged in and playing by then.. so not very informative.. should be all day or at least 12 hours before scheduled maintenance..

This isn't rocket science... inform people when you have re-scheduled the normal maintenance times!!!

Lets comapair ESO service schedule upkeep to... say a A/C repairman..

If said AC repair man were to give a time, and then show up 2hours early... Say the owner is not home, knowing that the time is still 2 hours to go, they went shopping.

Said repair dude does nothing to get a hold of the home owner and just leaves, marking it as no one there to receive him. at best maybe leaving a message saying they came.

Owner gets home with a hour to spare, but after 5 hours, calls the company, who tell them what the dispatch did..

Do you think the Home owner would ever be willing to try said repair service again after such a face slap?

NO. and chances are good that family and any Neighburhood friends will try that repairman either...

One bad call can have a massive ripple effect in any service. Being Punctual to set times is EXTREMELY important to maintaining your customer base, as is proper communication if things need to be changed.

ingame, we were only given a 15 minute warning. On the fourms, there was nothing. The launcher might have had something, but once the game is running its either closed out or minimized behind the game and not visible.

ZOS did not use the tools at their disposal to give us proper warning, Nor have they kept to their "officially announced times" prior.

Most people work/school on Monday morning. Most people play at night. Therefore, most people won't have a problem with this scheduling because they won't notice anything but improved game performance. I'm only here because my day off fell on the 9th this month.

As for the early downtime without notice, perhaps there was a legitimate reason their communications division decided that keeping quiet was a good move. Such a small flaw... why don't you get them the benefit of the doubt? It's only been two months, are you so betrayed in your relationship with ESO already?

Wouldn't it be nice if the processes learned and used to apply hotfixes for other games (say like like WoW) were used in future games?

Let's just go ask those companies how they do stuff. I'm sure they'd totally share. After all they love sub competition right?

Let's apply some real life examples. In your world SAAB would still be the only car with seatbelts and Facebook would be the only social media platform for us to use. I don't think so.

Skills and concepts are learned. There are pioneers and then there are people who use those concepts and improve them even further. A good game developer has eyes and ears on the competition and looks at ways not only to match, but improve their own offering. Options may be to hire employees who have specific experience in hotfixes on MMO servers, or to take courses and upskill/train existing employees to improve process.

In this case first and foremost, a good communication skills course would be a great start. There is knowledge that good companies have lived by and shared quite openly via hundreds of texts/interviews/web pages for many decades now. I think that's the major beef in this thread and I think there's lots of room for improvement.

Betrayed is not the right word, frustrated is. This isn't the secret service - there is no good reason why things should be done 'on the quiet' from a strategic perspective.

As it stands, I have a server that goes down twice a week at minimum right in the very narrow band of time I have to play at night. I don't have time to play most weekends, so forgive me if I'm frustrated when I have a window of time to play and without any prior warning that game time gets taken away.

Starting maintenance 2 hours before schedule doesn't seem like an emergency type situation. If it was an emergency my view would completely change.

    So, have a tissue.

I'd like it if there was more than one tissue in that box you have.

Silly of me to whine about downtime for a game right? First world problem? I just wonder why you have read through all this whining and taken the time to post if it didn't matter to you.

Don't you mean "most EAST COAST US PEOPLE"....

Your Monday morning is my Sunday night so why don't you try to put yourself in other people's shoes before posting BS...

Why even defend them not posting the change with some lame hypothetical.. this is a business... there is no benefit of the doubt.. imagine it.. dev teams says "hey lets do maintenance 2 hours early"... SOMEONE should then take the 2 seconds necessary to inform the player base which is the bread and butter of the game.. COMMON SENSE!!!

According to the twitter feed, still down.

Not directed at you personally but I can't believe people don't use twitter. Reminds of the other thread where eso players didn't know what Youtube was about, didn't realize that some Youtubers actually make money making videos, etc. Just mindboggling in this day and age.

Agree. It may be possible for them to do a cut over to a redundant server (or server cluster). Make changes to the redundant then cut over- maybe 10 min server downtime.easy as pie. Right? I would think so but maybe its not that easy.

Good news. New patch being deployed as we speak. http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/109018/patch-notes-v1-1-4#latest

I assume this explains the longer than usual maintenance.

It's good to to see patches/improvements being deployed on this great game regularly.

I still believe in a case like this, a simple announcement such as 'longer maintenance period planned on xxxxx date' a day or two in advance would be enough to keep me happy if my feedback is worth anything.

I'm about to go to sleep - can't wait any longer. Hope others get to enjoy the improved ESO soon :)

Strange to see they pushed the Bolt Escape nerf to this little update, I guess they are as tired of people whining about it as every player who plays Sorcerer.

And Annomilies grant no XP or Vet at all now... that will *** people off...

Dont understand why they completely removed any XP from it tho... Strange to have any mob that doesnt give at least some...

Funny but this reminds of, yes, WoW. WoW used to have the scheduled 8 hour maintenance every Tuesday. People got on the forums to complain to say that if bank atms never go down. why should WoW's servers go down for maintenance. Those people always got pooped on by those who said that WoW wasn't a bank, it was just a game, that it would cost too much, etc.

Then some time later, WoW announced that it would only do a restart in lieu of Tueday maintenance. Wow!

Nowadays, WoW often doesn't go down at all for Tuesday maintenance. Not even a server restart.

So why not with eso some time in the future?
  • jayssenrwb17_ESO
I'm sick of this company, they couldn't organise their way out of a paper bag. How hard is it to set a scheduled maintenance time and stick to it? Why does it take them hours and hours to push out small patches that contain a handful of fixes? Why do they need to pull the servers down twice a week? Why don't they even try to communicate with their customers in a timely manner? Ugh honestly, one of the worst MMO companies I've ever given money to.

No maintenance/Downtime sounds like a dead game to me, which we all know WoW is. Not saying i wouldn't like to play 24/7, but being realistic, it just won't happen.

Yes, the game designers have to take maintenance downtimes into account for when it would be best for MOST people. I realize that Australia gets the short end of the stick if it is the US or EU server they choose.

Since people live all around the globe no matter what time they pick will be bad for someone. They base the US downtime on the east coast as these folks are the first to wake up and first to get home to play. This accounts for a HUGE number of players.

Hopefully as the game is more stable these things won't impact on folks as much. But you know, I am on the East Coast and can't play now as the server is down. That is how it is and their Terms of Service (which I linked on another thread) says they can do it and not tell anyone about anything. Of course that doesn't typically happen.

Yes this was a customer service blunder. They should have posted it. However this is a GAME and this is the forums for a GAME. It is irritating when you can't play but that is all it is. A small irritation. Suggesting that they improve their communication is a valid point when offered in a constructive manner.

LOL, everytime it is maintenance, it is time to grab a bag of popcorn and read the forum. Life goes on, people won't die from this, I mean seriously....It's the same stuff week after week on the same topic every time it is maintenance, as if people are so surprised it is going to happen. So they went down a couple hours early...it is not the end of the world.
