Do Puzzles Affect Immersion Within Game?

Everyone:

... perhaps I am in the minority, but when I encounter puzzles in ESO — especially some of those found in the higher zones and elsewhere — it throws me completely out of the experience.

Instead of enjoying the exploration, combat and lore, which immerse me, I find myself treating puzzles as if they were a crappy jobs that I need to pay the bills and nothing more.

Yes, yes, I know. One can usually Google or YouTube the solutions, or even use chat, but, still, it totally throws me out of the gaming experience.

So, to sum things up, this is sort of a cross between a complaint and an observance. Nothing to lose any sleep over, but worth mentioning to see if it's just me, or if there are other puzzle haters out there, too.

(Aug. 22, 2014 update: It would seem I am in the minority. Oh, well. Such is life.)

Well the various puzzles have always been a part of the TES experience, usually as a lock, just consider them do be an extravagant combination lock (with the combination code scattered around you)

Maybe instead of going to Youtube/Google, you could read and listen what the quest giver tells you about it.. and immerse away! :P

I don't understand why you have to google or youtube the solution. I can't think of a single puzzle in any of the factions that the answer wasn't pretty obviously given to you.

It doesn't take a genius to figure them out though does it? And its only immersion breaking if you alt tab out and google the answer. Having to solve a puzzle IS part of the immersion. You, the hero are supposed to be smart as well and strong and powerful.

Haha, okay well that one you may have to google, but the answer is there in the notes, think it was a poem or something similar. It's just the quest interactables are bugged and you can't actually see what you are doing. (This is the way it was in Cadwell's Gold content for me.)

The puzzles are part of the immersion, you normally have to read the books around or talk the nearby NPC's to get clues so I don't really see a problem with this.

I find great immersion in solving the puzzles without google. If you're actually into the lore and listen carefully, the answer is revealed alot of the time. Also clues to the puzzle are usually strung about the puzzle's area. I think they're fantastic.

Puzzles and solving them by reading books should be even be more complicated
The idea of solving a puzzle to open a hidden chamber was always been good
(this being side quest not interfering in dungeon completion ofc)

Sure, some of us like puzzles, some of us don't. But breaking immersion? I think you might be confused as to what that word actually means. Puzzles are part of the game, so it's actually impossible for their presence to break/disrupt something that they themselves make up a part of.

I love puzzles personally and I wish there was a lot more in the game.

Puzzles are so easy a caveman could them. My only complaint is they are almost all the same. At least throw in some Telenger type riddles.

This "game hero" also has a real-life job, a family to attend to and other social obligations. The immersion is broken well before Google/YouTube enters the picture, because I'm sitting there with one eye on the game and another eye on the clock.

Agreed, which is why I didn't implicate *all* puzzles as being bad.

Love the puzzles. I like something that I need to think about and investigate a bit instead of mindless run here, kille 10 of these go back, hand in quest type jobs all the time.

They quests are WAY to easy, there is absolutely ZERO skill to complete them, every step of the quests are marked on the map and the compass, its simple easy mode.

They have added a minor challenge in a few puzzles here and there, but those we can try and fail as many times as we want until we get them right, no need to actually solve the puzzle.

That sucks, the quests should be alot harder, without questmarks, the puzzles shouldnt be possible to solve by trial and error over and over again. Should be a cooldown or something at least

As it is on Veteran levels, I feel absolutely zero accomplishment doing quests, its tedious and repetitious.

Make future quests ALOT harder, with no quest markers and puzzles that can't be solved by trial and error.

so far i have found all of the puzzles to be pointless cheap ones with the answers glaringly obvious, usually right above the question.

Like finding a wall with pictures you have to active in sequence.... and having the exact sequence RIGHT above it...
I play every class in every situation. I love them all.

The game needs more puzzles actually, there are so many ruins that don't do anything and could be perfect for randomized events.
Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

I rather like the way Rift handled puzzles. Had to think to figure them out, with a bit of trial and error while doing so. The only hints were the ones you gleaned from the way the pieces behaved when used. I was on the one in Ember Isle for about a half hour before I figured it out, was great.

The ones here? None took more than a minute. Even my brother, who usually hands the controller to me during puzzle sections, kept up with little problem.

We need a skip option! Like conversation! Then if i am a mindless thug i can just skip the puzzles and move on to bashing stuff! We also need this option for quest that have me running around town for hours. Isn't there just a politician i could punch?
