Why is ESO always one step behind others?

PoE2 just released something I talked about some time ago here on our forums, something that could make the game so much more fun. Something that would fit perfectly in ESO... something that would actually make a lot of sense...
but what do we get in ESO? Yes... exactly... [snip] Market... oh boy...

It’s almost like different people like different things.

I enjoy the Night Market, though I would much rather have had another pair of traditional Dungeons instead. If I wanted to play Pokémon, I’d do that instead. I don’t even have non-combat pets active since I don’t like followers.

I find non-combat pets (and to a somewhat lesser extent, combat pets) highly annoying.

This would not add "much more fun" but just more unnecessary clutter.

I also find "we NEEEEEED!!!! this thing!!!! and I HAAATE!!11! that thing!!!!" (slightly exaggerated for emphasis) posts not exactly constructive.

I'd like combat pets instead of companions. Can also be humanoid, but without the fleshed out dialogues. Just a wider selection. Feels wrong to have 7 Isobels fighting the same boss.

Poe 2 had taming already, it's the bosses that's a new thing. Anyways those are very different games and one which forum we're on right now is way more "conservative" overall, it's not very wise conscious decision to expect loads of something new and fun from it every year when they have so many unresolved flaws already, it's an mmo which can't afford much risk unlike Poe which lives off it with crazy ideas and pouring creativity and have a wipe every season to have place for something new and to trim fat constantly.

Taming pets in MMOs isn't a new idea, and it doesn't have to be a major feature. It certainly doesn't mean those games are like Pokemon or whatever. Guild Wars 1 and 2 both have it as a key ability for rangers and even if you're playing a ranger it's not a big thing. Sometimes you find a tamable animal and if you choose to tame it and have it fight with you, but it's a very simple system and doesn't take a lot of time.

I would like a way for wardens to summon something other than a bear (and not just a different coloured bear) ideally for me a wolf or some type of senche-cat, but I assume if we ever get that it will be done through skill styles rather than taming pets.

I've never played any other mmos, but skyrim had a thing in the anniversary edition where you had to catch horses and tame them. It got left til last and I only did it in the end to complete everything. Seem to remember there was something else with pets I did earlier on but the quests were a bit more interesting. Never used the pets tho.

Personally I'm happy with Sharp as a companion and my pink butterfly as a pet.

I do enjoy Night Market tho even if I'm not very good at it!

Not everyone wants the same things, or thinks we're missing out because we don't have that other thing because that other game has it

Fair enough, but I think that’s kind of the point of MMO systems — they’re optional. People who enjoy dungeons can keep doing dungeons, while others get new progression or collection content to enjoy. A taming system honestly sounds more immersive for Elder Scrolls than another cash shop showcase.

i do think GW2 has an extremely cool and solid pet system for the ranger class where you can find a lot of different pets all over the world...
in ESO id already take gladly if we could have different animal skins for the warden pet, at least maybe 2, 3 additional ones...a big cat, a wolf and maybe something more magical

We have actual companions that we can customize, dress, and have questlines. That seems far superior to collecting mobs that autoattack and maybe do one special thing.

I'm not on POE2 telling them how they are a step behind ESO because they have superior companion system over one ascendency class having gatherable pets.

I assume the OP thought that the Night Market was an interactive cash shop, kind of like how people thought the Gold Coast Bazaar would be a physical location in the Gold Coast. I assume this is because of the "Market" part of the "Night Market" name.

I really like the pets. I absolutely love my Warden and miss it very dearly since Subclass. The game has not been the same since. And I do cherish my pet Sorcerer, it is the only way I will run a Sorc. I like pets as long as they are permanent. I wish the Necro Summons were this way. And Maw of the Infernal. I wouldn't mind seeing them expand upon these.

I will say, I do also love the Night Market. It is a great addition to the game and I hope to see more of these kinds of Events.

This! There's nothing in there you need cash for. Can't even really think of anything new in there that could potentially end up in the crown store.

It's funny that they hate it so much that they have to use a censored word every single time they mention it, but don't really know what it is.

In terms of customisation and story involvement the crown clearly goes to SWTOR's companions. Mechanically DDO's hirelings are way ahead of either. If ESO wants to shoot ahead, they should allow companions to:
    • move out of stupid
    • continue to fight when the player is down
    • stand where the player wants them to and fight from range
    • pull the "bUt iTs aN mMO" group-enforcement levers in some dungeons.

Why is ESO always one step behind others, you ask. Well, ESO has always been behind because they are afraid of doing something different, so they instead follow other games and see what's successful and then work to incorporate it into ESO.

From the beginning, if DCUO added something, a short time later, ESO would do the same. If FFXIV added something, eventually ESO would do the same. Since they were released around the same time, ESO always seemed to follow what the other two did, if it was successful. I often commented on the forums when they added new stuff, how it seemed like a coincidence that DCUO or FFXIV had just added that same thing a few months earlier. Go figure.

Even people who have been playing the Night Market and understand how it works were surprised it's not also a market. There was a whole topic asking why it's called a market and why there aren't more vendors.

I'm still unclear on that to be honest. I knew that for us it'd be all about fighting enemies, but I thought the 3 factions would be collecting and selling stuff. The Goad do talk about selling stuff, but only after the Night Market closes and then they run an auction, not a market. The Thousand Eyes never sell or give away anything they find, and the Ruckuss don't mention it. So calling it a market isn't even a lore thing.

It's also possible the OP is talking about the actual Crown Store Showcase we get each month, but that's an article on the website, not something that's ever been in the game.

Do these combat pets in other mmos have any fair amount of customization? Dialogue? Quests? Placable in homes? Favor?

Most games you summon something and they generally just run at mobs until they die with not much interaction. I do agree some more control over their UI would be nice as some other games do have modes for pets where you can move them, instruct them not to attack, etc. whereas ESO's Companions are just reactionary as far as I can tell.

Overall though ESO's companions are more involved than combat pets, which ESO also has through Warden and Sorcerer, and temporarily on Necro.

We have some control over ours too - you can target what they attack with a heavy attack and there's a combo of buttons that will call them back to you. I use that to get out of combat or to get them out of the brewmasters shield in IA. There's also one for manually using their ultimate. There might be more but that was enough for me to remember!
