I wish that Tomes had a Tutorial because I am confused

I would have loved if the first time I opened Tomes it had a step by step tutorial showing what this does and what that does. It would have been especially nice if it told us about the caches and how once they are opened all but 2000 points can be lost if not all are spent at the end of the season. And if it told us to click the daily thing because I had no idea we needed to do this every day until my friend told me, and when it is clicked it's not obvious that it did anything.

This UI is not user friendly or informative and a tutorial would have cleared up a lot of the confusion. I don't know if it's too late to add one but it would be very helpful if they did.

This was my first thought, but then I remembered how terrible the tutorial was for Antiquity scrying so maybe not. Seems like the one for ToT wasn’t great either.

This system seems like a whole lot more work than Endeavors, I’m not sure I’m going to bother figuring it out. Instead of jumping through one flaming hoop I am now jumping through a whole line of them. Why would I want to permanently unlock the ability to purchase these things?

I am not sure what the confusion is about?
You had to click on the daily rewards to get them, same thing here.

What's different is the time limit and the loss of points unless spent on useless stuff.

You can reroll activities and some give more points than others. I diden't know because i assumed the reroll affected all activities and not one at a time so i diden't use it.

And there is the problem of the tome caches you earn with eso plus that if opened expire at the end of this tome season (there are a lot of threads about this one).

Ok seems I had a different button mapped..... f1 brings up the screen where Tutorials can be found.... ofc this could also be a button I've re-mapped! Basically it's in the help section :D

Question Mark at top of screen.... I'm useless at instructions too it seems! :)

So you can reroll some of the activities? Because I seem not to be able to and thought that was because I had started on some of the first ones. But then again, pressing F4 to get the UI up doesn't work for me either (as stated on a separate reply in the Bug forum).

You can also get the UI up by clicking on the Tomes Icon which is next to the Crown Crates Icon.

If you have re-rolls available(dice on left of screen) hovering over the challenge you wish to re-roll should bring the option up at the bottom right of the screen...... however I've just looked and one I've started obviously wont re-roll BUT of the other four (which I haven't started)only two are giving me the option to re-roll so seems to be pretty bugged/broken atm. :(

EDIT:- Ok I am walking away from the forums because I just noticed the two that didn't give me the option..... I HAVE completed part of them!! :o

One more thing @marcbf is it possible you have remapped F4 to do something else?

If you hover over the Tomes icon next to the Crown Crate icon it will tell you which key you need to press to open the interface. :)

Yeah, same. I'm clicking on the dice going, 'is it bugged?'. Nope. It feels like the interface was designed on consol and then ported to PC. PC users are used to clicking on things, whereas consol are used to looking for keybinds. Just a difference in UI. It odd to me to look for keybinds to do what I'm normally able to just click on.

I don't understand how this works either. I opened my caches and I have 6000 points to spend. When I hover over the stuff I want and click the E (acquire/hold) button, nothing happens. None of my seals or trade bars increase and my tomes points are not being spent. Disabled my addons and that didn't help. So frustrated. Tried to get help but there's no category in customer support for this. Any advice?

I didn't want to repeat what I wrote in the bug thread, but yeah, I checked for duplicate and/or incorrect bindings. There isn't any. And hovering over the Tome icon in the top menu lists F4 as the key to press. Alas, it does nothing. Same for rerolling. I seem to have 5 rerolls (the number 5 and two dice are shown to the left) but I cannot seem to activate a reroll.

I was having the same problem then I accidentally hard pressed it and it worked.

I can't figure out why they put a keybind with "acquire (hold)" if it doesn't do anything. I can't even figure out what "hold" is supposed to do anyway.

This is the most confusing system so far. Even worse than subclassing.

Thank you for telling me that you hard pressed it and it worked for you. It worked for me too. I think what it should have said that to acquire that prize, you have to hold down the E "acquire" button. (I play on PC). You just can't click it quick. Thanks for relieving my stress. I truly appreciate it.

I didn't hard press the "E". I hard pressed the item I wanted to purchase and that bought it for me.

I still don't understand the whole "acquire (hold)" thing. It looks like a toggle of some sort. I just don't get it.

The design is to hold the button so you don't accidentally claim items you didn't mean to. Other games work like this because instead of two button presses (one to select the item, another to confirm) you only have one button press (hold the button to confirm, prevents accidental presses). This reduces the number of times you need to press buttons.

ZOS should adopt this technology into other parts of ESO. This game uses similar mechanisms like pulling up a text box and asking you to write text to confirm, or pulling up a prompt asking you to press the same button again to confirm. This new tech could improve the flow of the UI and save the user time.

Other games can use whatever systems they want but this is brand new to ESO and just copying how other games do things does not make it intuitive here.

I still do not understand holding a button so we don't accidentally claim an item we didn't mean to. They should just say "long press to purchase" and stop toggling between things that are unnecessary and make no sense.

I find this extremely confusing and hope they never change our current systems to something like this.

Is it really that hard to figure out though? If you quick press you can easily see it wasn't claimed, but that it begins the slider bar for completing the purchase.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to add the instructions in the UI somewhere I suppose. Or they could have done an "are you sure" pop-up window. But I'm sure this is to save their CS people form hours and hours of tickets from people who click on things quickly by accident and buy something they don't want.

What slider bar for completing the purchase? All I saw was it keep saying "acquire (hold)" and nothing happening. I did not see a slider bar or anything else to indicate that I was purchasing the item.

And how would anyone know there is supposed to be a slider bar when it's not something that has ever been used in the 12 years that ESO has been around? I don't even know what a slider bar would look like or what it is supposed to do without some kind of explanation.

Maybe it glows and makes a sound? I don't remember, but if it says "hold" then that should be the clue.

Worked fine for me and I bought a bunch of stuff. I felt it was intuitive that I was in the process of buying one way or another after I quick-clicked at first. Only took once to realize I had to hold it, and that was without reading a tip that said "hold" lol.

It's a new feature. I'm sure it'll be polished over time.

A big part of the direction ESO has been going in general is moving away from outdated or frustrating design philosophies... which includes the grindy nature of old MMOs and the complicated UIs. Crossplay is another example of how ESO is being modernized.

We do not need to keep sticking to old, frustrating design choices. ESO should have some consistency, though — that's why this new tech should be explained better and added elsewhere in the game.
