Honestly, why not? We're most likely not getting flying mounts, and any ledge that we're not supposed to jump off of has a kill plane anyway (as well as invisible walls if you were to go out far enough) so gliding shouldn't be game breaking. Of course, it would have to be tested against all areas of the game, PvE and PvP included, to make sure players don't find new ways out of bounds or new ways to skip content.

If gliding is something that could be customized with Customized Actions, I'd love to see a "levitation magic" inspired glider where your character looks as if they're channeling a spell to slow their fall.

It took Guild Wars 2 a long time to actually change game environment for flying mounts. From start GW2 had small elevation where player could make use of Gliding and avoid getting killed from fall damage (which there where traits [compared to ESO traits would be like our Champion system work today; account wide points that can be set up different for each character after the account wide unlock of certain traits have been done] that will reduce FD).

The main difference between ESO and GW2 is that GW2 where design from start with under water skills and with under water environment (although this changed and have to some degree been rolled back especially for Open World PvP). This means that devs had some experience with 3D combat and how to design objects and buildings under water to not look odd when player would be above those objects where ESO have very limited view points from above (as players aren't supposed to stand on a mountain or even higher object and look down - there where also much more limited viewing distance in both games to start; the classical fog or could like limits to hide the not so charming truths that there wasn't anything to see).

Adding Gliding took also time in GW2 where things had to gradually being changed and added. I don't think in ESO this would work out as well as game are already much more heavy on hardware side compared to GW2. Remember that with more angles that you can see objects there also will need to be more textures and models to keep things looking at least something that player will recognise as buildings or objects, and with the amount on player in that area of view.

Even today if player mounted and have a very high movement speed it can be noticed where loading screen will start to show or a delay when items/objects need to be loaded in view. GW2 have less of issues here as ArenaNet made use of streaming and instanced maps (the reason why everything in GW2 is on a time for a map zone; exception for overland PvP which is more static).

Adding a feature like Gliding or even flying mounts where player can look down from higher elevation (like flying) then ground will force a very complex rebuilding of ESO maps and how player can make use of that.

With GW2 there where also a story (lore) behind to match how it could be used in game play (your own personal "dragon" which where called Skyscales) and how new skills could be used. In ESO this would not work as game make use of zones for over world maps (instanced maps is what you have when going into a Dungeon or Trail where you typical have another layer for main map and sub section of that map) and there is also the issue of how both games originally where designed and what have been added over time in content.

Do player want high resolution texture on objects while being in first person view and standing close to objects or do player want to be in third person view only as view close to objects will cost too much performance where player can not move as fast they can today on mounts as to avoid getting too many loading screen while game engine try to catch up with position of play and elements?

Maybe as something to test on Night Market, but I don't think so anything like that would be needed in ESO.

why would "need" have anything to do with it?

grappling is also not needed, mounts arent needed, swiming mounts arent needed...

its not about need but potentially useful or fun additions

Since the ESO dev team is already reduced and has to limit the scope of their projects, I think putting some devs on something like reworking all of Tamriel to accommodate gliding (or flying) is a waste of very limited resources.

Would it be cool? Sure. Do I want ESO to dedicate resources to this? Absolutely not.

I think it would be fun and doable if they introduced a new zone related to Cloud Rest and griffin riders and allowed riding/flying in that zone, but making the rest of the world support it would be a huge undertaking.

Imagine how disappointing it would be to be flying around and hit invisible walls everywhere. That would be the experience in most places currently in the game.

While it was fun in the games that had it, I don't think ESO could introduce it without a major engine overhaul. I don't have confidence in it not breaking more than it increases fun.

Pretty much the reason we cannot have flying mounts.

Correct. You'd glide into rocks or a wall and keep going straight off the map, which can be its own adventure I guess.

Exactly the same for me :D

I honestly wouldn't even mind if it did negate fall damage completely, but then again, I am also the queen of walking off cliffs because I was looking at the pretty scenery, or I wanted to know what was at the bottom of the cliff, so a way to stop *dying* because of that would be great for me :P

I voted no because I don't want flying mounts or gliders everywhere. However, I wouldn't necessarily be against their existence in the game if they're done right. Really high points letting you glide down as part of an achievement, perhaps, but I don't want to see them all over the game.

It was SO COOL gliding in my magic carpet in GW2

But I doubt it would be useful in ESO considering the ever-increasing number of invisible walls blocking paths.

Nay, because it would make the world feel smaller and less immersive.

Adding ways to quickly travel over 'inconvenient' terrain puts the player in the mindset - either consciously or not - that the design of an area doesn't matter. There are a lot of ways terrain can help tell a story. If you're allowed to simply jump, glide, or fly over it, you've missed a major part of what makes the game world feel alive.

And while there are quite a few wayshrines within a zone, there's normally a load screen; which is a different mindset.
