A Veteran RANK 10 Short Review of ESO

Hi,

To be honest, this post is pointless. But I can’t help myself.

Leveling. Something we all must do in any structured MMO and I doubt to see a change in this in another MMO to come soon. It gives a feel of accomplishment and unlocks new possibilites in form of skills and new content. This serves to more than the D&D old school system but also (while not acknowledged), prolongs people like you and me to stick around becasue whether we do it in a day or a year, we want to see our character perfected. Time in an MMO generates money for the developers and by investing time we unlock skills, gear and so forth. Only with time are you wearing shiny armor and that badass sword with the end tier of skills at your disposal.

The 1-50 leveling wasn’t bad at all. In many encounters it was actually quite enjoyable. I leveled once every hour in the end and the flow of skill points came in handy as I tried all skills across the board tip I found my setup. It’s when I hit veteran rank things began to change.

I thought, with most other people along side of me ”Hey, it’s only 10 ranks, I’ll get through this pretty fast.” But the game is designed so that you will gain 1 rank every new area. So effectively, you should be rank 5 by the end of the second alliance and rank 10 at the end of the third. That means it takes ten times as long to level one rank than it did leveling 1-50. If you haven’t figured that out yet, it’s a hell of a long time.

Yes, world bosses, dungeons and dark anchors sure helped (I can’t say dolmen because it’s slang in my language for what guys have between their legs). What didn’t help was all the blocked content due to quests being bugged and many to this day still are. Though there are ways around this, to me, it’s beyond idiotism to launch a game that revolves around a story that has quests that you can’t complete. Maybe try and beta test the game yourself instead of pushing it out in public with nothing completed but the graphics? I’m not telling you how to run your company, but hey, sounds pretty basic to me.

Warhammer Online, the most enjoyable MMO ever made (and yes I was the first choppa in europe to reach rr80, bow please!) used pve and pvp, coherently yet set aside. For those of you who don’t know of this game, basically, you could level while doing what you wanted.

Why didn’t ESO do this? Why does it feel like a chore to progress in some games but in others, a delight?

I answered myself.

Regarding the bugs and lag - I’m speechless to how this game ever made it through beta. As I mentioned before time is money but its a factor in other forms as well. With a flawless game ZOS’s forums wouldn’t have the same posts as they currently have. This is by far the worst launch I’ve ever encountered and for those of you who want to slap WoW in my face - Wake up. That was ten years ago and you’d think after a decade, the hundreds of MMO’s following this beacon would have learned from WoW and others mistakes.

And the end game? Where is it? Wayrest sewers? Yeah, done 500 of those and thanks for the dagger and bow loot 99% of the runs. I use staffs and light/heavy - not that you care. I ended up crafting gold for myself because the loot is dreadful in comparison. In my opinion, Craglorn should have been released with the actual game instead of calling it a patch. Most likely they rushed that too and thought they call it that so people think they are actually doing something besides ignoring customer problems.

Enough rant, I give ESO 6 out of 10 so far. Yes, it’s early but they launched the game in this state, thinking it’s ready, didn’t they?

PS. I love this game

As a fellow vr10 i agree especially on the last part. The only reason i have to log in now is do a few vet dungeons with guildies, because its fun and i do like the dungeons and fights. But the loot is just useless, i can try to sell the weapons to get a bit of gold income but thats it.

I would like to have a reason to do these dungeons, give me daily quests for doing these that award tokens etc to buy legendary weapons in a shop or something. Many mmo's have some sort of reward system for doing dungeons outside of the loot u get.

Good luck grinding till VR12 now. I'm getting a Lvl + half every area to avoid tedious grinding in the future.

I am VR10 - I consider it an accomplishment all by itself.

I wait patiently cos I know I'm an "early adopter". I know things will improve.

I got my 80 bucks worth from playing this game just as a single player experience - I would have paid for it for that. Now I can give Zeni 15 dollars a month for a few months and wait and see the improvement I hope for.

I don't want it to be a single player game any more though - i want to make friends and do the new thieves guild stuff with them. I hope I find nice people to do Craglorn with. fingers crossed.

The only thing I watch really nervously is the levelling bots. I was always ahead of the problem by levelling faster than they did - but now there are VR bots and they slowly get there. The day i see them in my end game i will leave on the minute and cancel the sub - because then this game dies for me. I pray it doesnt happen cos right now I love the game. The end game for me is called "patience":

Perspective is an interesting thing. The OP goes on a bit about the broken quests, bugs, poor beta, end game etc. Then the OP goes on about the virtues of warhammer online. Warhammer online, where almost every (of the very few dungeons) were bugged, massive game issues they refused to fix (bright wizards firing off 10-20 aoe's in under 1 second), a game that was so poorly managed that it is one of the few major MMO releases to actually close.

Ultimately if we really like a game we all look past issues and play and if we don't like a game we hammer every failing we can find

In fairness to the OP I also find that this game was released to early and poorly beta tested, and am on the fence about staying or not

Well, to be fair, I think the Veteran Ranks are a massive time sink that continually underwhelm. Slight stat boosts, meager stat cap increases, a smattering of armor points and weapon damage here and there--however you still don't feel any stronger. After hundreds of hours in, I recall fighting lv10 mobs at lv10 and realize that it is exactly the same as fighting VR10 mobs at VR10. Sure, I've got different abilities, but the effects are so uniform as to make it all seem like a lateral movement. This could be okay, but we've all seen MMOs like ESO referred to as a "theme-park", so let's check out the ESO "roller-coaster":

Dang, let me on that. You see, this ain't no theme park, it's a history tour. All the mobs are assigned easy to see levels in accordance to their areas, which all go in ascending order. It results in a kind of malaise that brings on auto-pilot, "Hey that's a--" no, shut up, it's a VR8 mob. I can't really recall what I've been fighting all of this time--bandits, cultists, daedra, the power? Sithis himself could manifest and demand that I fight him, and sadly I'd only see a number; VR14 eh? Time to get out "the good potions". Well, actually, I take that back. Mannimarco and Molag Bol were the only battles I felt invested in, and now that's so long ago I have to talk to friends and guildmates, "Hey, remember that time we killed Molag Bol?" just to be sure it really happened.

I managed to cruise on by with minimal bugs. It was when I reached The Army of Meridia and then Crossing The Chasm that I really hit the wall. Spent a lot of time waiting there, but since then it's been smooth with minor hiccups. Nothing to send that Francis dude into such a fury. Not every computer is the same I suppose, not like with consoles, nor is the infrastructure of The Elder Scrolls Online to be compared to anything but The Elder Scrolls Online. Sure, you could tell me, "but X is a MMO like ESO!" and I'd say, "Super Mario Bros. 3 is a platformer like Mirror's Edge, but the comparison stops here for me."

Now about endgames. This concept was the worst thing to ever be devised for the subscription based MMORPG:

    end·game
    ˈen(d)ˌgām
    noun
The final stage of a game such as chess, bridge or The Elder Scrolls Online, when few pieces or cards remain.
"the VR10 Templar was trapped in the endgame"

Some of us expect to pay, monthly, for an organic experience that evolves overtime. While Zenimax has demonstrated their desire to provide such, there still remains the notion that my money is largely put towards the retention of my characters. Cloud based storage. I could, and would, argue that Cyrodiil alone has the potential to be that evolving experience, but it's current state renders it more suiting as the setting for Fallout 4--the Imperial Wasteland. Whatever, just gimme some jet.

I'm still having fun. My friends are buying the game! Yes! Then comes the major let down: I've finished the game. I can't go back now, so all I can do is wait for them to reach me here at VR10 or encourage them to try PvP when they aren't focused on PvE. Why not roll an alt? That'd require a character for each friend and meticulous scheduling as to not have any of us progress further than the other.

Surprised you gave it a six. That's generous. Considering the game was released 50% complete, I'd say it deserves a five.

Poorly managed, rushed for PC, prioritized for consoles, a few bad design decisions, server issues, combat lag, whatever...

Worst launch I've seen in recent years. Next to Rome II, of course, which was the equivalent of setting fire to 60 dollars. At least with ESO you got your money's worth in some areas. Before cancelling your sub to stop the bleeding.

They'll polish this game up for the console crowd in time for Christmas. Only then will it be playable.

Desire to provide and providing are two different things yesterday I got mad over some rollback in StormHaven VR i didn't rage quit coz I know the game still fairly new blah blah but in another 2 to 3 months this type of thing happens again ill most likely cancel right away. Some of these bugs still around since beta. What were they thinking?

Rollbacks are everything to get upset over, but nothing to quit over, so I think you made the right choice. Can't even speculate on why they're having area specific rollbacks other than there's some shady (bot/exploit) stuff going down in Stormhaven at the moment. That guy who advised you to finish up your quests and get out of there asap yesterday? I think that might be your best course of action.

Rollbacks may happen in the future man, and they do care enough to fix the bugs--don't let the small stuff spoil your experience.
