Hi,
To be honest, this post is pointless. But I can’t help myself.
Leveling. Something we all must do in any structured MMO and I doubt to see a change in this in another MMO to come soon. It gives a feel of accomplishment and unlocks new possibilites in form of skills and new content. This serves to more than the D&D old school system but also (while not acknowledged), prolongs people like you and me to stick around becasue whether we do it in a day or a year, we want to see our character perfected. Time in an MMO generates money for the developers and by investing time we unlock skills, gear and so forth. Only with time are you wearing shiny armor and that badass sword with the end tier of skills at your disposal.
The 1-50 leveling wasn’t bad at all. In many encounters it was actually quite enjoyable. I leveled once every hour in the end and the flow of skill points came in handy as I tried all skills across the board tip I found my setup. It’s when I hit veteran rank things began to change.
I thought, with most other people along side of me ”Hey, it’s only 10 ranks, I’ll get through this pretty fast.” But the game is designed so that you will gain 1 rank every new area. So effectively, you should be rank 5 by the end of the second alliance and rank 10 at the end of the third. That means it takes ten times as long to level one rank than it did leveling 1-50. If you haven’t figured that out yet, it’s a hell of a long time.
Yes, world bosses, dungeons and dark anchors sure helped (I can’t say dolmen because it’s slang in my language for what guys have between their legs). What didn’t help was all the blocked content due to quests being bugged and many to this day still are. Though there are ways around this, to me, it’s beyond idiotism to launch a game that revolves around a story that has quests that you can’t complete. Maybe try and beta test the game yourself instead of pushing it out in public with nothing completed but the graphics? I’m not telling you how to run your company, but hey, sounds pretty basic to me.
Warhammer Online, the most enjoyable MMO ever made (and yes I was the first choppa in europe to reach rr80, bow please!) used pve and pvp, coherently yet set aside. For those of you who don’t know of this game, basically, you could level while doing what you wanted.
Why didn’t ESO do this? Why does it feel like a chore to progress in some games but in others, a delight?
I answered myself.
Regarding the bugs and lag - I’m speechless to how this game ever made it through beta. As I mentioned before time is money but its a factor in other forms as well. With a flawless game ZOS’s forums wouldn’t have the same posts as they currently have. This is by far the worst launch I’ve ever encountered and for those of you who want to slap WoW in my face - Wake up. That was ten years ago and you’d think after a decade, the hundreds of MMO’s following this beacon would have learned from WoW and others mistakes.
And the end game? Where is it? Wayrest sewers? Yeah, done 500 of those and thanks for the dagger and bow loot 99% of the runs. I use staffs and light/heavy - not that you care. I ended up crafting gold for myself because the loot is dreadful in comparison. In my opinion, Craglorn should have been released with the actual game instead of calling it a patch. Most likely they rushed that too and thought they call it that so people think they are actually doing something besides ignoring customer problems.
Enough rant, I give ESO 6 out of 10 so far. Yes, it’s early but they launched the game in this state, thinking it’s ready, didn’t they?
PS. I love this game
