Are you more hopeful for the game since the Jan 7th announcement?

I'm certainly more hopeful. What caught my eye wasn't the new content but the rolling back of unpopular changes that were driving players away e.g. return to 30 day listings and (maybe) a willingness to consider a return 4v4v4 BGs.
This shows a willingness to listen to players and take on feedback that has been sorely lacking in previous years. If ZOS can follow through (and that's a big if) then IMHO 2026 might be the year when the game finally started turning things around.

What do you think?

Am I hopeful for the game? Remains to be seen.
Words are words, so let's actually see them listening. Let's see them interacting with the PTS testers. Let's see them go in a direction for all players.

But am I excited for 2026? Not in the slightest.
The main thing I wanted was a new Class since the existing seven are stale, but I really didn't think one would be coming because of the decision to do 7x Class refreshes over the next two years, and I doubt they'd want to muddle that with another Class on top of it.
But the fact that the Group Dungeons were sacrificed on the altar of "here's what you all want" feels awful. The Group Dungeons are hands-down the best content this game puts out, and instead of getting new Dungeons to experience with our friends, we're getting... FOMO event Writhing Fortress-esque stuff sometimes and solo versions of soloable dungeons?
At least I can just ride around the new zone and experience the art team's work though, right? Oh wait.
Yeah, all we're getting that's new is a few more storylines, when the writing of the game is consistently highlighted as one of its weakest points as of late, and one of those storylines is going to feature the Elder Scrolls series's most insufferable annoyance?

Honestly, when I'm sitting here thinking that 2025 had more than this? 😬

QoL is nice, but content is what matters. Without content, why would anyone care about QoL or pain points? And the lack of any group dungeons means that there's absolutely nothing in terms of the primary content that I play.

Gonna have to see how they follow through, I've heard the talk before. Bugs are still prevalent, new content usually brings more of them. I guess we will see, ESO has become my secondary game these days so I hope so, but not heartbroken if it stays my casual filler.

Some things suck to see, like no new dungeons and more Sheogorath things (ZOS cannot write Sheogorath well, I don’t like any interpretation of him I’ve seen in ESO). That said, my main takeaway is a reserved sense of hope. Removing some of the predatory crown store items is the biggest thing for me. Letting players earn things that were crown store-only, even forcing players to earn things and not buy. Adding lots of very popular things like trying out story mode dungeons (yay! Not because I’ve wanted it but maybe the complaining will stop? Lol) and increased furnishings in houses and repping guilds without the tabard, etc, etc. is really nice to see. I feel like ZOS is showing us they really don’t want to watch the game crash and burn and they want to commit themselves to steering this ship around by doing anything they can. Possibly unpopular opinion, but the night market gives me hope for more engaging seasonal events that aren’t just “eat this cake” / “go to this one location” / “craft an object” / etc. I love the experimental things ZOS is cooking, the game needs it exactly now.

But I mean it when I say reserved sense of hope. The pass can easily become shoving more and more into higher tiers, leaving the free pass increasingly sparse in rewards. Easily, it can become massive FOMO bait. The lack of a clear release system makes the game feel rocky— will the trial community get a year with no trials? Will the questing community get a year with no quests? Is the new norm to not expect your community to get anything at all until who knows when?

After 2025 being a bit lean in terms of new content, 2026 will be even thinner. No new group dungeons, (maybe) no new zone to explore. Just a new trial of which nothing was disclosed about. Everything else is mostly reusing existing stuff. Even the few bits of the new Night Market that were shown during the stream just showed reuse of existing bosses.

We'll get a whole bunch of new cosmetics, though. Yay.

There are some changes that I think are nice (new PvP progress system, werewolves) but the simple fact that they are not able to provide (older) story contents in the language I play in is disappointing and makes me not hopeful for the future. But we'll see.

    And that's a problem.

We should not have to wait two years to get a balanced game, especially when U46's PTS was full of people saying "THIS IS AN UNBALANCED MESS; DO NOT RELEASE IT LIKE THIS!" and the devs were like "lol who cares." And now, because they need to spend two years rebalancing the game Class by Class, we're not likely to see anything new for combat until 2028 at the earliest.

They should have been spending U47 and U48 balancing the Classes and interacting with PTS, so that we could maybe see new stuff for these Seasons beyond prologue-level quests and the fifty-seventh time Sheogorath is shoved in our faces.

Not for me. I finished all content recently in the game.

The only exciting thing on all those infographics for me was a new trial. That's it. I will also play the temporary market mode for a few evenings.

But no new zones, delves, dungeons, sets, class etc. The things I play this game for... So it means I will probably barely play this year.

The quality-of-life stuff they announced is great, but let's be real. Most are reverts of bad decisions and do require little development changes, but all of those listed together they sound impressive and like a great win.

The rest of the stream I heard the word 'rewards' 100 times. Nice for those who like that, but for me that is not content. I already have 1000 skins, pets and mounts I never used.

There are some good bits in the announcement, although a lot of it is fixing their previous mistakes. It's good that they're fixing them, but discouraging that repairs are worthy of inclusion in the announcement, it makes it look like they were struggling to find things to include.

Which brings me to my main problem: QoL and balance changes are fine, but mean nothing unless there's something to DO in the game and the only new activity announced is the Night Market, which will only be available for 3 months and sounds very minimal. Yes I know they said future seasons might sometimes include zones or quests, and listed some terms which might be names for them, but we've got no information on that.

Also there's no guarantee any of this stuff will go ahead. Remember their year of improvements, which they quietly dropped when it became clear they couldn't fix anything noticeable to players?

    defenitely yes,

not sure how it finally works out (especially the battle pass thingie), but the overall impression is very positive. A lot of good changes planned imho.

However, the real thing that makes me feel positive about the future of the game is the changed communication and the way they want to work in the future "togeher" with the playerbase. I know we have heard that a lot in the past and there has nothing changed. I dunno but somehow it feels different this time.

Finally we'll see it in the next few weeks, when the feedback for the new update will flood the pts forum ;).

    Hopefully I'm not to optimistic...

Where's the dungeons, the new zone, the new World Bosses, the new incursions, the new story etc etc?

What was announced was not Elder Scrolls to me!

Oh and just to add, so I can personally ignore the Battlepass because cosmetics aren't my thing(unless ofc furnishings are deemed cosmetic!), however what I wont be able to ignore is everyone elses new flashy cosmetics.

I play for the story, closing new zones and pve raids. I am not interested in a game which is basically chores for cosmetics I have way too much playing since 2018. just the new trial existance won't make me to return and correct me if I am wrong, class rework will take 2 years? what I see is a continued course to cater to new solo and casual players, leaving vet players and end-game enjoyers behing

I'm broadly positive in that I think they've clearly recognised that the chapters model meant they were having to plough on with new story content at the expense of literally anything else, and the accumulated chaos of barely touching existing systems as this carried on was becoming unsustainable (especially for new players). It felt as if every previous zone was being left to rot and lent a really WEIRD vibe to the base game zones in particular, which made it all the more bothersome when the year's new content was mediocre -- like there was simply no reason to engage with any of the game at all.

    However, three points.

    1) I'm pretty baffled about why anyone would pay for the season pass or whatever it's called if all it's offering is cosmetics (I'm not at all clear even from the website articles what, exactly is paid for and not) when substantive content, including zones, is to be offered free.

    2) I'm also pretty baffled about how this affects ESO plus. If all it's really offering now is the craft bag and higher furnishing limits in homes, it's a very expensive proposition.

When you look at 1 and 2 I'm not sure how ESO is going to make enough money so I wonder if this is really sustainable.

    3) While I really, really applaud the decision to focus on fixing things and shaking things up, and adding a variety of content rather than the exact same formula year in, year out, the danger is that whole years will pass in which there won't be anything at all to interest particular types of player, so they will sit them out.

As an ultra solo player, for instance, I'm here mainly for the story content and for housing (though from Greymoor, particularly, onwards, I've felt the quality of the story writing had become so very bad that I increasingly had no desire to engage with it).

Unless the thieves guild stuff is really very special, what I'm looking at is a year of very innovative, good improvements none of which actually interest me (I can't stand Sheogorath in ESO -- I find him gratingly over-acted and silly. In Shivering Isles Sheogorath was a dangerous, malevolent psychopath; in ESO he's an irritating pantomime joke character and unless he's given significantly more nuance and depth the very thought of spending more time with him turns me cold).

I hope it works and I really like what seems to be a willingness to rethink things from the ground up (my hope is that they'll get round to rethinking the trading system and providing at least the option to disconnect it from guilds, which would bring me running back -- but that's my personal obsession). But, again, from a commercial point of view I'm not sure regularly introducing entire years that don't scratch particular types of players' itches will prove sustainable.

Fair concern, but it's possible they'll still be tweaking the other classes even as they focus on reworks, either way, DK is looking amazing, and that will give me enough patience to wait 2 years to see it all finished.

I can say I will not reinstall PTS for this update. I mean, what for? To test that the horse update includes 3 points a day instead of 1 now?

The Night Market is the only actual content (changing daily endevours and golden pursuits to that new thing, or changing event tickets to event bars is no new content for me), and that's not enough for me to bother with cluttering my disc with 100+ GB.

Yeah. Crossplay and Cross Progression is a huge undertaking and while it's not coming this year, I'm glad to see it happening.

Class refresh sounds like it will move too slowly but I'm glad it is getting done.

Night Market sounds cool to me.

And there's a huge host of qol changes that I'm excited by.

It sounds like there will be quests. I'm not sure why people are under the impression there won't be. I think they're well aware this is an Elder Scrolls game and story is important. It's just not going to be structured the same. But I'm cool to revisit old areas with new stories personally, especially given we'll have the difficulty slider.

Also ship battles just sound really fun. I'm excited for that event. Would a new chapter on top of all of this have been better? Ofc! But I understand resources aren't unlimited, especially after the cuts. And I like what I'm seeing so far.

The player base just seems so bitter. I must say tho, it's not their fault. After years of mismanagement and lack of communication, i was to. Even quit the game for a year and a half. But this update was immense. Its funny when people get so mad about things such as the battle pass, which is TOTALLY optional. And you even get a free one, while getting all the Story/zone/PVP content, systems and updates for 100% free.

And people here literally upset there we are getting class refreshes? as if the older classes don't look stiff and stale? pfft. Yeah it sucks the timescale is a bit long (im a necro main and we are last in line) but i'd rather wait and get it done thoughtfully. It doesn't happen at a click of a button. and most people who don't work in game design have such unrealistic expectation on how things work. And to say again, it isn't partially their fault. After so many disappointments and failures they have been beaten into cynicism.

But i for one, am super excited about the direction. All the changes are 100% a win. The new game lead seems thought and wants to make a difference and i believe it will work out. I guess the only criticism i do have is the lack of explanation of the next area in the story but with what they did discuss i am more than satiated.

i'm hopeful for the personal things. i'm excited about the free stuff... but it kind of does the opposite in terms of hopeful for the game in general. i feel like a lot of ppl are going to drop subs and not pay for the passes, so i don't see this as being sustainable for them. who knows though? they might get enough ppl who will pay for passes or subs just to contribute that they can do it.

    I'm a firm maybe.

The reveal had a lot I like. A lot of QoL changes I like, a lot I know others desperately wanted to see, and I like the apparent changes they're making to events. I'm hopeful about the upcoming class rework, even if it will take longer than I think it should. Revisiting the Thieves Guild is a huge huge plus for me.

The pricing really stuck in my craw though, and in an age where it seems everything online is trying to nickle-and-dime its users at every turn (video games, streaming services, cloud services, etc..). ESO isn't the only online game I play, and I don't appreciate feeling as if it's trying to Lock Me In so to speak. It's all adding up and soon I'll likely begin making some cuts to stem the bleeding.

So for me it all comes down to execution. If ever there came a time where ZOS and ESO had to "put up or shut up", this is it. This is the moment for me.

It will all come down to execution over the next quarter or two for me.

I'm not convinced from what I saw on the global reveal. There is zero hype building up. ZoS really needs to learn how to hype of their product for once. Not saying the changes are good/bad just not enough to really revive the game for me. The direction feels all over the place.
