I was always under the impression that account authenticators were not mandatory to access your account. I've never had an authenticator before and have never had a problem accessing my account. It just adds added security if you want it. It wouldn't solve anything bot related.

No. It helps keep your account secure in a bot-riddled, security-compromised game. It isn't just people who buy gold that have their accounts hacked, and hacked accounts are a danger to more than just the player involved. The first time you see a guild bank get cleaned out after a member's account gets hacked, you'll understand what I am talking about -- perhaps.

Yep, basically botters can hack an unprotected account into one of their zombie accounts, and then ... hello perma-ban.

many of the bot and spamming come from stolen accounts
I've not seen a single spam in my mailbox on in chat that came from a stolen account .. and if you have to ask "how do you know if an account's stolen" my answer is "no legit player would call their account "adgfew32535"!

When they steal an account they take everything from the existing characters (gold, items etc) and then create spamming alts or bots until the account gets closed. Part of the reason for the stupid names is to add difficulty in reporting (if you try to type the names that is)

My password is 35 characters long, I don't remember it, and KeePass auto enter it for me, that's my Authenticator

I don't feel the need of them to patch your lack of password knowledge, but instead I want them to fix all the buggy achievements and in game REAL things !

Authenticators are always totally optional. And they are more of a "feel good" thing. Botters aren't hacking and stealing accounts. That is a lot more work than just constantly creating new accounts from the lists of fraudulently acquired credit card numbers they use. (I went and actually searched the internet. I couldn't find an account of anybody actually having their account stolen by a bot. Just a lot of threads like this full of fear.)

Anyway, I trust that Zenimax / Bethesda are trying to get rid of these guys. I am seeing fewer and fewer. And I am not going to let unreasonable fear rule my life.

    That would be great.

Would help with bot problem, at least to an extent.

That being said, customer support is kinda lacking at the moment. Looking at subscription issues, where you are charged amount and then same amount is put on authorisation for no valid reason, authenticator could be a major issue.

How would an authenticator help with the bot problem?

It doesn't. :) The system they have inplace ( needing their system to determine if the account being access matches the one on record) seems to work well as to authenticating accounts. I would guess they want an authenticator to protect against getting hacked from when they purchase gold from a botters site.
Magic is impressive but now Minsc leads SWORDS FOR EVERYONE!!

And shame on you for starting an mmo without one.....

Please name one MMO in the history of the genre that started with two factor authentication in place. I'm curious to know. Even Blizz introduced it only after about three and a half years after NA launch.

There will *never* be a massive multiplayer game release with full balance, no bugs, full content, full features, full tweaks, full...everything at launch. It's NOT the nature of the biz.

Wouldn't expect it. But let's face it: Some shortcomings are just so blatant, that a majority agrees they should be quickly addressed and rectified.

Not sure the authenticator would do much good, but good grief those bots are out of control!

I haven't played WOW for around 2 years.

I'm being offered gold for ESO not for WOW.
I've gotten ads for gold sellers on my real email account which was only given to Zeni when I signed up. It is not used in the game anywhere. Looks to me like their servers have been hacked because they had to get my email from billing / registration.

If you have played any other MMO, especially WoW or any Sony game, they had their servers hacked a while back now. The gold sellers will send emails to anyone on that list for a number of games.

    If I wanted a Signature I would have a Signature --- but i don't want one so I don't have one.

    SWTOR launched with an authenticator

Ah, thank you. I didn't know that.

Add FFXIV to your list too, it had authenticator tokens at it's first launch too.

    GW2 as well.

Um, You might want to do more research and drop the Bot aspect, just look for people having their accounts hacked and possessions stolen. There are thousands of those.

It happened multiple times when I played SWTOR (not to me, but the victims did post on forums), which is why they beefed up their security.
