Unnecessary Subclassing Hurdle

You already have to have maxed out a skill line to 50 in order for it to be eligible as a subclass choice so why are we forced to relevel it again on a new class? It seems rather disrespectful of the player’s time.

I want to make it clear that I realize it’s not very difficult to do, in fact you can almost do it just from the massive bonus exp reward from daily dungeons and battlegrounds provided you also use an exp scroll, but that’s just the point: it’s an annoyance more than anything.

On top of that, the nature of leveling skill lines incentivizes degenerate gameplay where you slot all of the skills regardless of whether or not you’re using them just to level it faster, often making you a liability in group play.

Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, because of this unnecessary hurdle players are also less likely to experiment with different builds which defeats the whole point of the subclassing system. It seems really ill conceived or perhaps it wasn’t even taken into consideration at all which is, quite frankly, even worse. And if it was intentional I would certainly like to see the reasoning behind it because it’s sure to be a doozy…

I would love some clarity on this decision or even better a change. @ZOS_Kevin

IMO the reason is to add more time grinding for you. ZOS just loves to have you grinding. No innuendo intended. ;)

You don’t have to create a brand new character but if you want to use subclassing on one of your existing characters you do indeed have to start from scratch and relevel each of the skill lines you wish to use from 0 to 50 again and each skill and its morphs from 1 to 4 again.

As you say, it’s a monumental grind and very disrespectful of the player’s time. Particularly those of us who have already leveled all of these skill lines before.

Oh well that's not bad - kind of makes sense actually ... if a toon hasn't used a skill before it should have to level it up. That's a relief that I won't have to start a new toon :) Thanks for the reply :)

Now I understand why people are saying "look for the scrolls to be available in the crown store soon" ... like how you can buy the alliance war / scrying / etc skill lines ... yeah that'll be coming for sure lol

After consuming all my xp scrolls, leveling six lines, I decided the rest of them I will only do when xp buff events are present and wil only progress normally through 1st random daily. Saved a slot an armory just for that.

My hands felt like they were on auto pilot while grinding skyreach catacombs, while watching shows on another screen.

I for one was annoyed, since I have a maxed out nightblade, arcanist, and templar that I wanted to take skills from for my sorc. The PTS implementation was better and made sense, since having a maxed out original should be equivalent to maxing out the skill-lines via subclassing.

Took me a hot minute to max out one skill-line from each class in the game 🥳 (variety is the spice of life). I appreciate the new green CP for leveling up skills. I love subclassing, but damn I lost count of how many 150% xp scrolls I ate 😂

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).

Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

I'm in the unique position of agreeing with the OP even though normally I would not. :D

I am a big fan of consistency in the game world, so normally I would appreciate the leveling requirement. I like things for my alts to do, and I enjoyed collecting sceibing scripts on my alts. I don't mind time sinks or grinds because that is just part of what MMOs are, to me.

But there is just something about power leveling line after line just so I can check out a build, when I have had all classes fully leveled and explored for years, that just isn't enjoyable. I think probably because the potential impact of these changes to combat are such that it isn't "fun" to slowly uncover it. I want to rip the band-aid off and see how things feel and perform.

There is a version of me that would have been an advocate for the leveling, and yet I do not like it.

They gave us a double-XP, long weekend before the patch.

I leveled an arcanist to 50 with most of the arcanist skill lines maxed. Everyone is talking about the pew pew skills and I must admit they melt things.

It would have been possible to do 2-3 characters to 50 if I was really motivated. I have done two before during one of these events.

I'd say its the price of entry for an advanced system. It will keep new players engaged for a long time, but reward long term players.

That they ran the experience event right before the patch was kind of a slap in the face. At least thats how I feel.

So I have to create a character I do NOT want to play, but I would like access to the skill line.... and then have to run it up to 50.... for literally no reason.

I can understand requiring a character to be 50 before that character can subclass, but at Creation the classes show up for free at level 1. Why don't they all show up as options once you hit 50 ?

I mistakenly thought the qualifier to switch to a sub-class was to be 50. Now you are telling me I have to create different characters I don't even Want to play and push them up to 50.

    This is Not fun.

Hold up - I cancelled ESO+ and haven't bought the chapter (whatever its called) - figured Id take a break until update 46 dropped. Was going to buy the chapter and get my ESO+ going this evening and get back into it ... if I read this right I have to start a new toon and relevel the skill lines I want to be able to multiclass??? I have every skill levelled in every class on my existing toons ... do I have to do it all over again? Because if so ... $crew that - I ain't doing that and I'll find something else to do this weekend and kiss ESO goodbye.

And... you'd feel better if they hadn't had it at all? In reality, the XP event continued until the morning AFTER the patch... so people who logged on Monday after the patch until Tuesday morning had access to the XP event; I managed to level several class lines for four hours on Tuesday morning. Then, I popped more XP scrolls after the event ended, and ran a public dungeon for a couple more hours and ended up leveling roughly 12 class lines. So no, it's not a 'monumental grind', and this is, after-all, an MMO where some grind should be expected. ZOS wants to keep players logged into the game as long as possible, so sure, just like companion leveling and rapport, it takes a grind to complete.

In further regards to the XP event, IMO, designed for people trying to either get their first character to level 50 or for those who were trying to level an alt class to 50. They also handed out several 150% XP scrolls for daily log-in during May, and have been giving out XP scrolls during previous months as login rewards as well. I had five 150% XP scrolls and eight 100% XP scrolls from daily login rewards, along with several 50% XP scrolls. If you've been playing the game, they have been planning for this for months by rewarding XP scrolls... and they also added the new green XP star to the Champion system giving 15% more XP gain on class line and skills.

You can also equip the proper gear... full set of leveling gear and Heartland Conqueror training trait is also extremely beneficial.

I agree; however, i'd like to extend this notion to leveling a variety of lines:
    - Mount training
    - Research
    - Excavation/scrying
    - Guild lines

I would love it if we had the option for account-wide progression in that sense; however, I know this will never happen and that some players vehemently are against it. It'd make me and my friends super happy nonetheless - not holding my breath though!
