ESO Revival Strategy 2025

Step 1: Transfer ESO over to whatever new engine the new game they are working on runs on and upscale the existing graphics.

Step 2: Combat revitalization and normalization: get rid of the buttonmashing and simmer it down to what players actually like. Basic and responsive action combat. No BS.

Step 3: Overhaul all the existing linear dungeons using my radial dungeon format. Same assets, same themes, a different way to play.

Step 4: Discontinue groupfinder and replace it with NPC guilds with specific content focus which features achievement based and ranked chats to bring people of similar interest and quality together naturally.

Step 5: Get rid of the cp system and replace with a simplified achievement based advancement system with a basic two choice specialization system to promote player diversity and performance.

Step 6: implement account based pvp alliance rank. Simplify pvp to three campaigns: novice, adept and master based on your highest account alliance rank to give new players a chance to learn the game.

Step 7: Discontinue trials and battlegrounds and merge them to pvpve instances where 3 groups of 4 compete in intense pvp and pve for the spoils.

Step 8: Win. Finally. lol. This game has 10 years of content that most people have never seen. 24 mill is nothing. Few mmos are coming out and even fewer are any good. An engine imporvement and modification of game systems can breathe new life into this game. Its an underachiever and always has been. Take a chance.

I think being a top 3-10 MMO for a decade means it has already achieved step 8, the first 7 there will obviously never happen but step 9 is obviously continue to improve and grow the game and for it stay a good game for another decade

With such expectations I'd suggest looking up the market tbh, that's not what many people would want who's already playing plus just unrealistic expectations cranked to the maximum is never a good strategy to not get disappointed.

No to any of this. I'm usually not one to be like, what you want is bad so this is kinda rare to me. But just no, man. Good billy Maze impression though.

Would make a ton of sense if the new engine was able to handle data transfer more efficiently, allowing for less rubber banding and desyncs. I think this would take a ton of time though.

HARD agree on this. But combat overall would need to be slowed down and there are a fair amount of people who like their fast action 1 shot pvp so sadly I doubt ZOS would listen, but I agree with you.
    Rungar wrote: »

I am not sure what Radial Dungeon format means, but overall I think dungeons are ok except for fake tank abuse. I can see where new life breathed into them might make them more appealing though.
    Rungar wrote: »

This would be a good way of getting more people of like minds to play together, but there are also a lot of people who need things like group finder to get things done in a timely manner due to real life.
    Rungar wrote: »

I like CP's, but the weighting on some things is so heavy that you can't take it...meaning you never really get to use the other areas to put points in. There is definitely a "best in slot" nature to the items we choose meaning we are all choosing the same things. Which makes a lot of it feel like a lot of work for nothing. A simplfied format as you suggest would definitely be easier on new players and the game performance should increase without all that unnecessary data being transferred.

Fixing PVP in ESO is a tough one. The core issues that need to be fixed are part of the games design (mainly too many set combinations and or the fun (or frustration) of putting builds together. I like WOW's approach where the PVP sets are currated. Everyone is in the same gear (essentially) that the devs can more easily balance. ESO seems like a nightmare to balance. But getting rid of the sets in ESO is at this point chucking out a massive chunk of the game.

My opinion. ESO pvp is not worth it. There are other games that do it much better and are ultimately more fun. I wish I could have wowesqe pvp in ESO (I prefer their battleground format) but its not gonna happen.
    Rungar wrote: »
Step 7: Discontinue trials and battlegrounds and merge them to pvpve instances where 3 groups of 4 compete in intense pvp and pve for the spoils.
I agree battlegrounds could be better, but I think the issue with trials is more about finding a way to let people get their feet wet, especially those who are not social. Trians for some are intimidating.

I don't disagree with much of your sentiment, but I think we are at the poiint where the ship has sailed.

I'd love LOVE to see the game redesigned/better designed for engaging combat, more rewarding activities, and overall much better performance, but from a business perspective, I imagine ZOS is happy with their income and see no reason to make the game anything other than it already is.

    Clearly bait but anyway

    1) you can't just "transfer" an engine. You'd need to re-do everything. It's equivalent to building a brand new game.

    2) what button mashing - there's GCD and weaving. What "action combat" are you anticipating?

    3) if you want a job, apply for one.

    4) why are NPC guilds "better" than a group finder? How do people join activities together outside of turning chat on?

    5) why would two choices be more diverse than 4 slottables? Why is diversity required, also? Why are achievements better than XP?

    6) sure

    7) who wants that? Trials are the most exciting pvpve in the game, and battlegrounds are alright. Cross play would be better here I think (if optional).

    8) do you think few MMOs are coming out because they are bad, or because MMOs are a niche market and people just move on to other games over time?

    1) This isn’t necessary and is a big ask. If WoW and Runescape can still have a population, then the focus should just be on making sure everything works. Also imo ESO graphics are decent for an MMORPG.

    2) I disagree completely. I personally love the combat.

    3) The Dungeon designs are fine.

    4) Absolutely not. Group finder is fine for what it is. We already have a guild finder.

    5) Absolutely not. Although the CP system can use some more work, which ZOS has already been doing.

    6) Although I am not against account wide alliance rank, separating players in a game mode that already lacks players is not a good decision. Also being good with one character does not mean a person will automatically be good with another.

    7) Absolutely not. Trials are important to keep as strictly PvE and battlegrounds IMO just needs to bring back 3 team game modes.

    8) ZOS is already taking a chance to adjust the type of content that gets dropped. For the most part, I don't think any of your ideas should be implemented.

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

Not really sure what people think a game engine is, but they're not like sockets into which the game goes like a plug. Porting a game to a different engine can involve substantially rewriting a game (and, indeed, parts of the engine). It's not something you just do, and definitely not as some sort of minor item in a laundry list over a year.

I mean they are supposedly working on a brand new mmo and have been hiring for that. Though even that is probably too far along in development to be changed into the game OP wants... but they *definitely* aren't likely to spend the next decade transforming a successful, 11-year-old mmo into that game.

If the goal is to get new blood and players to return you cant just keep doing the same thing youve always done. Without the chapters this game will lose that crowd so they will either have to be happy with population grind down and hope their new game is a massive success.. or make some big changes.

keep in mind that theyve already milked you for what your worth. Seems like they want new cows but not sure how to reach them.

you dont really need a big team to make favorable changes especially when your using existing assets and systems in different ways. I do agree that an engine switch is an undertaking but it is also the best advertisement a game can get. Plus these people to do this are already hired by zos for their new game. At some point their work will be mostly complete on the new engine and they may have time to do this, and certainly famialiarity with the new engine.

Wouldn't it just be easier to find a new game that meets your standards?

Or should Microsoft bend to your will and modify its roadmap to dump many millions of dollars into redeveloping ESO? (And you having to wait another five years to experience it?)

One thing that ESO did really well was pump out high volume of good voice acted quest lines in the ES style. Running through the quests in Blackwood right now feels a little bit like a childs game, but they are better than MMOs where no everything is voice acted.

Yeah I mean if OP is really serious here, this is simply not how corporations work. Imagine thinking decisions like porting the game to a new engine, eliminating trials and bg's for some entirely new type of mixed pvp/pve content (because IC is so popular!!), redoing ten years worth of dungeons, etc., could even be made in 2025. Development for this year is well under-way, planned, budgeted, people hired, teams and work assigned, etc. That process is certainly at the very least partially underway for 2026 too.

Remember that eso was initially in development even before Skyrim was released. The arcanist class and the scribing system, in zos' own words, were products of multiple years of development.

It's like trying to slam on the brakes on a 200,000 ton cargo ship and turn it in another direction. Business decisions involving millions of dollars are not made this way. But as mentioned, they are hiring!

they wouldnt of stopped the chapters unless they were no longer worth it (declining revenue). So since they did that, theyve already accepted that they will lose the demographic that like the new lands and trials every year. So the new blood wont come from people that liked that content.

it will come from players who havent played the game before or those that might return should there be new systems to investigate. This is why after all this time they are focusing on pvp. Self sustaining content, if they ever get it to work right.

This could never be a 2025 strategy. It would be extremely costly to hire the contactors necessary to get it done and tested in less than a year. It is plainly obvious since it requires reworking the entire game.

Great suggestion that would never happen. Even WoW has not made a wholesale change to their engine and that is the most successful MMORPG ever.

Step 2: What players actually like with the combat design is what we have now. ZeniMax tested a simpler design, and players rallied against it. Zenimax responded that they understand part of the reason ESO is so successful is the combat design that sets this game apart from other games. That means they will not go with the simplistic design some MMORPGs like WoW use.

Step 3: The dungeons are fine.

I will leave it at this since it is beginning to sound like someone wants a completely different game.

I definitely think ESO needs a good refreshing, but not like this. Most of this is not feasible in a reasonable amount of time.

    I think the game needs:

    - PvP performance to get figured out and population caps in Cyrodiil increased drastically. (They are looking into this)

    - Reward structure improvements for most activities

    - Meaningful balance changes to address long standing complaints.

    - Reverting of Hybridization, it’s a failure in so many ways

    - Gradual introduction of a 3rd level of difficulty, like a “Master Mode”. At this point power creep is insane and certain pieces of content no longer pose any challenge at all for end game players. Master Mode would breathe life into old dungeons and trials.

    - Crossplay would be nice, but not totally necessary.

I think these changes would address the complaints of the many endgame PvErs and PvPers that have quit. The combat they once loved was destroyed and power creep ruined other aspects of the game for them.

they wouldnt of stopped the chapters unless they were no longer worth it (declining revenue). So since they did that, theyve already accepted that they will lose the demographic that like the new lands and trials every year. So the new blood wont come from people that liked that content.

it will come from players who havent played the game before or those that might return should there be new systems to investigate. This is why after all this time they are focusing on pvp. Self sustaining content, if they ever get it to work right.

i dont see why trials would need to be lumped in with chapters, and saying that losing trial enjoyers is an acceptable loss would be a hilarious mistake

they cannot succeed at this with the way combat currently works. Im sure they already know this. They need to bring down the apm/calculations in a big way. Fans of the current combat system likely wont like the "Fix".

Alienating half the players who spend big money in the game (PvPers and endgame PvEers) sounds like a good way to cut the game population in half.

There is no revival possible. Any significant upgrade to the game is heavily constrained by the burden of old gen consoles. The game is also too old to make any drastic changes to combat, which is probably the main reason why this game (as good as it is in other dimensions) could never become a hit like WoW and FF14 were.

We must have a different circle of friends. The combat in ESO is what brought a good number of people to the game. Combat took a hit when they had to switch calculations server side and never recovered. Still a lot of players like the feel of ESO's combat dynamics.

    Completely correct.

ESO is a theme park MMO which offers a variety of different activities to attract a larger crowd. It would be an epic failure of a business decision to choose to alienate a major activity in the game and give us less to do.

An extremely large population of the game enjoys trials. Even very casual players do trials though some may choose to only do the easiest ones.

Many of the ideas are not feasible even if they would be good for the game. Other ideas would just be bad for the game and drive players away like this idea and the idea of simplifying combat.

ESO had an extremely rough start they righted that ship and did very well. F14 was so bad they had to completely rework the game immediately. You do not do that with a 10-year-old game.

The recent decline in players is more likely due to change they made in combat in the past few years and how they released content. None of that dictates a complete rework and redesign of the game which is proposed and would take years to design and implement. It will NEVER happen. The closest thing that would happen is ESO II which would be a completely new game built from the ground up or close to.
