I thought the Arx Corinium quest givers just spoke a different language as part of the programming. I never noticed that it was German.

I like the occasional german voice in quests, even though it's "broken". made it a bit more interesting to me... for the dialog that is not quest text, you can always make a chat tab to show written npc dialog, which has (so far) always been in english.

Also, ich habe damit überhaupt keine Probleme. Vielleicht möchte das Spiel ja nur den sprachlichen Horizont der Spieler erweitern?

Help, help! ESO forces me to speak German in the forums! Please fix this asap!

Yes, just as French sounds foreign to non-french speakers, Chinese sounds foreign to non-chinese speakers, etc.

I personally don't like most of the voices of the NPC's in ESO, when I heard the German voice it felt as if they were more into it than the regular voice cast.

Most of the NPC's seem like they just read the text from a piece of paper, did not put much emotion into it.

There are some exceptions, I am just very bad at remembering names.

Actually it doesnt. If I hear someone speak french, I know its french. Same goes for all the Norse- and Latinbased languages.
If I hear Chinese, I know its Asian language.

Yes, ESO is one of the few games where the german translation is actually better than the english original. Even I, who played every game in the last 10 years in english switched to german because the english voice actors are so terrible in comparison.

It sounds vaguely scary, at least for those of us oldsters who grew up on war movies, sorry. :)

As one comedian once pointed out, it doesn't matter what someone says in German (especially if it's a big scary guy), it always sounds like they're angry.

My husband saw my alt talking to the Wyrd creatures speaking to me in German, thought it was wonderfully surreal. I hope they don't fix that "bug", either, personally. It does add to the .. otherwordliness of it.

Even if we think they're really saying "We have ways of making you talk ..."

    ;)

My point was it instantly sounds Non-english to me, yes you can detect whether it's a European or Asian language (usually), but it doesn't sound like anything I understand. Thus it sounds foreign.

I wish I could speak other languages, but I struggled with and forgot my GCSE french, and have never even picked up more than a word or two of other languages. :cold_sweat:

I thought it added more depth to the story, I wouldn't mind if they left it in. The text is still in English anyway.

You should learn one, its actually a lot of fun to learn a new language. I speak 4 languages and I´m trying to decide what the fifth will be

Oh, and the amount of forums to spam in instantly doubles with another language ^^

Yes, when I was young, I used to dabble in other languages, had a dictionary that had Spanish, German and French translations. I can still recognize most Western European languages by hearing them, can still read Greek (made sure to learn how before a vacation there years ago so I could communicate via dictionary, and translate signage). I fired up a translator last night to turn something into Greek (whatever we were tallking about), and after I prattled off what was on the screen, he was surprised - "You can read that?" "Yes, but it doesn't mean I understand what it says."

And I will always always remember the insult phrase my friend's dad taught me as a teen. It's a Scots Gaelic phrase, you can hear Tommy Lee Jones say it in "Blown Away". I can't spell it, and I can't tell you what it means in English, sorry. I mean, I CAN, but not here.

One problem when youre someone who speaks english as a native language is that you arent forced to learn another language (because most of the world already speaks english).

For the rest of us learning english is kinda mandatory. You pretty much have to be bilingual in order to do anything out of the ordinary (like me posting in this part of the forum).

That gives us an incentive to learn other languages. Something you englishmen dont have.

I just want to interject here and say that it's not just English people who speak English.

That aside - your point is a good one. We have nothing but a personal choice to learn.

I took 5 years of German back in my high school/college days, and spent a year in Germany from 1989-1990. But then I didn't use it for 24 years, and consequently I'm REALLY rusty. I could very easily recognize that the NPC's in the Wyrd Tree questline were speaking German, but sadly due to not using it for so long I could only pick up one word out of three, not enough to really understand what they are saying.

That said, German is English's closest living relative. English is a Germanic language, and is much more closely related to German than it is the romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian).

Yes, my old mega-dictionary also had a section on the evolution of the English language, and gave an example of true Old English (of the sort Beowulf was written in), in the form of the Lord's Prayer (Protestant).

While it was fairly understandable, it did resemble German a lot more than it resembled English. But the weird thing was, as long as you knew that prayer off by heart (and kids of my day and age did), you could SEE what it said.

If I may interject with a related issue. When a person links an item in chat, it appears in the language of the client that linked it, not the client that is viewing it. Not a huge deal, but hey, as long as we're fixing it... ;)

Too bad that many Germans have forgotten the game is not German-only. Seriously, your Deutsche-Sprache-Quatsch at public chat is just a lack of netiquette.

For me, a 50/50 problem, since I understand it, but think about the rest of the users.
