How's the player-count?

    Hi people,

I've been wondering about this some time but I want to dedicate some hundred hours to TESO. I'm a bit reticent about the player count. In Steam, there are around 14.000 players. I know that we need to count the players that are currently playing in the non-Steam version and consoles. So, is that a good ammount of players for an mmo? Do you have problems to find gilds, groups or player to fight against in PvP?

Thank you so much for answering, and have a good night!

For practical reasons, it really depends on which subgroup of players we are talking about. Definitely not nearly enough end-game players (we lost so many), not enough PvP players. Long queues to do dungeons if you are a damage dealer (I usually play with friends but when I am in a mood for a pug I usually have to wait 10-25 minutes to do a dungeon). For questing / overland, it doesn’t matter as the game is basically single-player (and a ridiculously easy one).

Popular opinion is that Steam is the *minority* of installs for PC users (and I agree). Whether it's 40% or 5%, no one knows.

You're quoting concurrent player peaks and averages from Steam, not the actual number of Steam players that regularly play ESO. In August, there was an *average* of 14k players on the PC server at any given time, with a peak of over 22,000 players logged in at the same time.

I'm not trying to claim that the game is at all time highs or anything, but on my server (PC-NA), the game is still very lively.

ESO is remains one of the most popular MMOs, you aren't going to have issues in that regard, imo.

(All of that said, Starfield is taking a bite out of ESO right now, curious to see how long that's an issue).

Ever heard of how sampling works? All samples are minority of the population.

If you wish to claim sampling bias, at least state why it’s biased.

With Steam in particular there was several years where players looking to start the game were warned away from Steam because of problems. Players that started on Steam got away from Steam for those same problems. You can still from time to time see a post telling interested players they should stay away from Steam.

That is extremely dated data. I've played ESO since closed beta and moved from the ZoS launcher to the Steam launcher as soon as it was available on Steam and have never had issues with Steam even when others claimed to (most of the time the issue is between the keyboard and monitor). I'd wager with Steam being the main store front for most PC gamers that majority of new ESO players play via Steam - especially when Steam advertises frequent ESO sales for $5.00 when you log in.

I bought ESO through Steam, so it's tied to the Steam launcher and I (must?) purchase chapters and Crown packs through Steam as well.

99.5% of the time, I don't have any problems launching the game through Steam. And when I do have a problem, it's usually a problem that non-Steam players are having as well.

A few years ago, there were a few times when I had a problem launching the game and it was only happening for Steam users (due to an issue on Steam's side), but that almost never happens any more, it was usually fixed within an hour or three, and it wasn't happening nearly as frequently as a lot of people in the forums were making out.

I'm not saying that perhaps it was a more frequent problem in the years before I started playing ESO, but aside from a couple of instances a year during my first two years of playing ESO, now it almost never happens.

The number of players is at a healthy number for the game. I have no issue finding groups. Like any game, it may take trying a couple of guilds before finding the one that is right for you and actually active. When I started I found a guild that boasted 500 members yet many had not logged in for months and the leadership did not organize much.

In the end, I ended up finding two pretty good guilds. It is worth taking the time to find a guild for you.

"Healthy"! That's the word I was looking for to describe the player-count. Thank you!

this ought to be changed so that you get the notification that you would be loosing a ticket but be able to do it anyway if you really wanted to. another way would be to still grant enough tickets to max out but hold the remaining tickets you would've gained. you should then be able to get that rest once you do the activity again that day after spending some tickets.

Sorry for not understanding you, but, what do you mean?

I mean you should be able to loot some of the tickets you would get. just enough to hit the ticket cap. and if you spend some of them and do the activity again that day, you should be able to get the tickets you didn't previously have space for. not being able to loot only some of the tickets if the total amount would surpass the ticket cap is not well designed.

This isn't the thread about tickets. That would be here:

Yeah, it's easy enough to do - I sometimes have 12-15 tabs open, so I know how it is!

That's not accurate, a guess at best. This site gets their numbers from various sources, one of which is actually legit but only PC, and only a fraction of PC players. The other sources are a mix of 1) also guesses, 2) an online database of users (very small percentage) who can create an account and log their account characters, but the numbers are so skewed because it's counting user's characters. Nobody but Zos knows actual player counts, you can't even make a decent guess.
