Why do players jump like monkeys in PvP?

As a Sorc I have to jump sometimes to get my Curse or Mages Wrath skill to hit the target. So if there's just a little bump in the road or a tiny rock between me and my target I have to jump so the "line of sight" is out of the way. I know it sounds silly but its a thing. I'm guessing its a bug in the game or something like that, but jumping helps it.

I think it is pretty clear who is jumping occasionally for the reasons you cite and who is doing it as a means to move around.

I'm pretty confident that, for the vast vast majority of people who do this, it's nothing more than a habit. You can go all the way back to early MMOs like DAoC and find people doing this where it absolutely gives no mechanical benefit. There was a guy who made a video claiming the following benefits in ESO:
    1. Being able to swing the camera to look behind you while still moving forward at the same speed.
    2. Better targeting of an enemy player who is behind another enemy player.
    3. Continuous speed while blocking.
    (1) isn't necessary since there's a keybind that lets you swing the camera freely while moving. (2) and (3) are valid, but they don't require you to constantly jump as many people do but rather to jump only when you're in those situations.

In PvP, sometimes I jump to keep my tempo up during Dark Deal because I can't do anything else due to the cast time.

I thought the hopping around was a legit PvP tactic since I see so many do it. I tried it during the event and still died quickly.

I sometimes find myself jumping without even really thinking about it, as a way of keeping my rhythm in combat.

It's a habit that actually began for me in PvE - I'd just start jumping sometimes to count down the seconds while waiting for things to happen (like for the loot to spawn at the end of a dolmen or volcanic vent for example).

I certainly am not seeking, nor do I believe it provides, any real advantage when I do it... it's just a weird habit that developed over time for me.

Mostly habit now, but since my first (and main) character is a sorc it was a few things:
    - it helps me keep the 1 second tempo (ESOs GCD cadence and conveniently also roughly the same time that a jump lasts).
    - it also gives me something to do while I wait for all the cast times on sorcs abilities since dodgerolling and blocking cancel the ability cast altogether.
    - it also helps to keep the muscle memory going for bunny-hopping which is a common movement mechanic in MMOs and shooters.

As others have said, it doesn't really add anything mechanically to the game, but it helps with things like keeping tempo which is good so as to not just fall back into mindless button mashing.
Moving around a lot is also just good practice in PvP since a moving target is harder to hit in general than a stationary one and jumping adds a vertical component to this movement aspect as well as the standard horizontal movement.

Funny, I was going to ask this very question when I saw this post
For me on PC, jumping is awkward because it's bound to space bar
I was wondering if it's mainly a controller thing
    Is it?

I know lots of reasons people claim, most of which seem to be working on unfounded or unproven assumptions of how the game works.

But, to me at least, I've always thought the behavior looks like a taunt. And if you're actually capable of targeting and hitting anyone while jumping around like that, you probably have the skills or at least the reflexes to feel pretty warranted in taunting other players.

Whatever people claim, or even believe, I genuinely think that's the biggest part of it. Maybe subconsciously so, but definitely because it's a way of throwing other players off and expressing a hint of superiority.

I play a magsorc but I jump like crazy in pretty much every game I play, even in PvE.... so hearing that people take it as some sort of negative, "oh~ look at me~" behavior is something I just can't understand. And why do I do it? I don't know, it just kind of naturally happens and my hands do it without me really thinking about it. I'm not even a super meta chaser or the type to take ESO "endgame" seriously at all, so I didn't even know about the "advantages" some players claim jumping has until I came across threads like this. I will say, I don't really notice a performance/skill difference when I am jumping vs when I am not and have never felt like enemy players who do so are more difficult to kill either. The only real difference I can say it makes in my experience is that it helps ESO combat to be less boring. I could fall asleep attacking some of these enemies with massive health bars that aren't even a real threat to my character, so the jumping around helps to keep me more engaged.

Tried it today and seems like a great way to move faster without sprinting in combat, and to confuse close ranged opponents by repeatedly jumping over them. It just needs some more practice with my bash weaving. The aim is certainly not affected.

It's just COD habits. ESO hitboxes are much larger and don't have a top and bottom like other games.

It's actually detrimental, as you can't travel as far and and as fast as you can in a straight line. You also can't dodge as well when you're up in the air, until you land again. But some people use the space bar as a cadence monitor to time cooldowns.

Yes, it is. If you play a long-range character, you can jump up and take a shot at the player behind the obstacle.

It is actually detrimental to gameplay. For example if you get stunned mid-air, you usually can't break free until you land, increasing the time it takes for you to break free.

You also can't change direction mid-air so it's harder to avoid AoEs if you're jumping into it.

Although even I do it, a lot of it is habit and can help with targeting enemies, such as jumping to view over an obstacle which allows you to fire an attack before landing.

Which also goes the other way where you might show yourself but jumping over an obstacle which was giving you cover.

It is mostly just habit, and kind of like a metronome to me, keeps a rhythm.
