You’re arguing about “magicky” being wrong when I read so many made-up social media words in zone text chat that kids use nowadays - like “lit”. I mean that’s a legitimate word that people have made up an alternate definition, and it went from an adjective to a verb. I don’t ever hear anyone getting upset about that, lol. Drives me crazy.
I don't look at zone chat at all because I'd get a headache about the nonsense some people are posting there, making the use of "lit" look like a rhetorical masterpiece in comparison. Not sure why to complain, though, as I don't have to read or hear it (unlike Ember's lines, who can't be muted completely, if I'm not wrong?) and complaining wouldn't change it in any way. Also, it's none of my business if I'm not addressed directly.

I think it might have come from the name of a movie which I of course never watched myself.
It was a way of speaking in the 80s particularly in California if I remember correctly, where girls would say “like” a lot.

And that's fine. We are all allowed to utter our opinion about how we like her character design and about the things we like and dislike about her, aren't we? So wondering if some of her voice lines are correct is perfectly legit. It's also not the first time criticism comes up about her characterization, by the way, especially about her appearing very childlike for her intended age.old_scopie1945 wrote: »At the end of the day Ember is a pixel cat, cats being hunters intend to like killing things.
Real life cats do, yes. An intense joy in killing, even in murdering innocent people, is not part of the characterization of the Khajiit race in any Elder Scrolls game though. I know ZOS probably had something like "aww cute kitten" in mind when designing Ember, which makes it even worse, as it reduces the Khajiit with their rich, elaborate culture to being nothing more than walking, talking housecats.katanagirl1 wrote: »Lucky you on PC. Oh, that's awful. At least you learn many new exotic terms that way. Terms that will be forgotten after a few yearsThe latest I came across was "rizz", by the way. Obviously it's supposed to mean "charisma". Used by people who lack it.

... "doing something with magicky?" when you harvest enchanting nodes.
It makes zero grammatical sense, and it irritates me to the point where I almost consider unslotting her if I know I'll be harvesting enchanting nodes. She should instead ask "doing something magicky?" or "doing something with magicka?" The former would be the easiest fix.
That is all.

It's one of you best lines. Everything she says is fun. Her entire race talks in 3rd person. Other than Sharp Ember is far and away the best companion

The traumatic event of Ember’s past, when all her friends were kidnapped, happened when she was a child. You would expect that to manifest in her spontaneous sayings, and her thoughtful ones often go back to the relatively happy period before it happened. Even after you rescue them, they aren’t part of her day-to-day life any more, so they don’t get to pull her forward to the present.
The fact that a companion gets a limited set of lines to recycle is the main problem here. Anything repeated that much has that fact going against it. You would ignore it once, but the repetition makes it something different. If it was fixed to correct the grammar, would it still be annoying? Probably, so why bother?

Disagree: if ZOS fixed the error, it would be CONSIDERABLY less annoying. Repetitive lines don’t bother me in the slightest; they go hand in hand with RPGs. This is, after all, the franchise that spawned so many arrow-in-the-knee memes. Grating errors that set my teeth on edge whenever I hear them are a different story entirely. Fixing this line would be easy (just eliminate “with”), and I really wish someone would devote the (likely) less than ten minutes it would take to fix it.
Like I said, I consider unsummoning Ember when I harvest rune stones — that’s how aggravating the “doing something with magicky?” line is. Otherwise, I find her dialogue inoffensive. All my characters are Khajiit, so I tend to think of her as their slightly annoying adopted little sister. When she says something childish like “are we going to race?” I imagine my older, weathered, and long-suffering Khajiits sighing and responding with “no Ember, like this one has told you a thousand times, we are not going to race. Khajiit is simply riding from point a to point b.” Or maybe they’d mutter something like “Alkosh, give this one strength.”

Problem is not every one agrees. The two new guys have the same effect on me, to such an extent that Bastion has redeemed himself. At the end of the day we have to live with it. ZOS knows that what upsets one is ok with another, so best to do nothing in such situations.

Thing is, what I’ve described in this thread is obviously a mistake (either on the writer’s part, or the voice actor’s part). An error. Think of it as a bug. We always want to fix bugs, right? Why would we want the team to do nothing in this particular case? This is not about subjectively disliking some aspect of Ember’s personality — it’s an error, and it’s irritating. Simple.

Is it a bug or mistake, that's certainly up for debate. As Ember would say 'I like it, I want more'.
Everything's debatable, you just need to accept other peoples' rights to present their own views. In this case, the German translation might be the mistake, not the English version of the companion's line.old_scopie1945 wrote: »old_scopie1945 wrote: »The traumatic event of Ember’s past, when all her friends were kidnapped, happened when she was a child. I think I've made a pretty strong case for it being a mistake over the course of this thread.
What's likelier?
1. A writer or a voice actor made a small (but easily fixable) mistake in a game filled with hundreds upon thousands of lines, in an industry known for rushing content.
2. The author of the line in question decided to defy all known linguistic precedents (both in-game and in the real world) by awkwardly turning an intangible noun into a diminutive noun with a -y suffix, one time and one time alone, because it would be "cute." Then, for the German translation, they opted not to do that and used an adjective ("magical") instead.
I'm sorry, but it's not debatable. It's a mistake.

BTW what in the devil is a 'Valley Girl'.
A Valley Girl is a stereotype of a teenage girl who grew up in California's San Fernando Valley in the late 70's and early 80's. They developed a unique dialect referred to as Valspeak. In general they were looked upon as being materialistic airheads and at the time were frequently the butt of jokes.
