Bastian, because he is a genuinely good person without being obnoxiously "too nice." None of the others really seem to strike this balance.

Ember and Sharp are close behind, though!

Mirri has her moments, but her hatred of goblins and snakes grates on me. Isobel's candy-sweetness and Stendarr obsession irritates me, and Azandar I just cannot stand. :D

    I don't use companions
Ring of the Pale Order is my favorite companion. He scales with how well I play so it creates a nice incentive for me to play better. He also hasn't let me down so far and always does his job. He's also immortal so that's nice. No need to waste time or soul gems resing him. Plus he doesn't engage in pointless small talk, nor does he talk unless spoken to. Gives him a nice air of reserved stoicism. Oh, and he also doesn't get mad at random things like the rest. 10/10 companion imo. ZOS should really make more like him.

The dry wit of Sharp is my favourite. He has by far the best comments.

I think you can notice that the writing of the companions is improving with each chapter. Not just the quests, but mainly the personality.

Mirri has conflicting personality traits. She doesn't seeem consistent to me. And her family is just terrible

Bastian is just standard mommy issues. You get that type at every soap opera.

I like Isobel, because she is a consistent white knight. And she actually grows in character during her quests, when she needs to deal with what happens when you put trust in the wrong person.

Ember is a quirky and likable character, but her backstory is terrible. She waited how many years to search for her so called "best friends"? And her magic affinity is ideosyncratic. Why is her name Ember when she uses Lightning? I don't get it. Shouldn't it be like Sparky or some such?

Now Azandar is a clever take on the classic "sorcerer's apprentice" theme, a la J.W.Goethe. Not only is he both the stundent and the master in one person, he is also the ghost that he called himself and cannot banish. What I especially like is how he has to humble himself, in order to overcome himself. It is also a strong image of the daily fight against ones own worst version of oneself.

His unique personality aside (I love his dry wit), Sharp is the first character ever, where I buy the amnesia plot.
Every half decent publisher knows that amnesia plots never work. But here the conclusion is not that the amnesia somehow goes away and suddenly everything is back to before and all is shiny and peachy. No. Here the hero is deliberatly giving up his memories, his past. Not undoing the amnesia. He simply says: We'll make "new memories". And he builds up his relationships to the people around him from scratch.
And the quests around Sharp are the only ones in ESO that take a view at a very heavy, but important topic. Here it is freedom of will and thought.
I took nine years for ZOS to let us experience and almost feel what submission means. And it is not from the Lord of Domination ...

I think the writers at ZOS have understood that they need to up their game with companions or our little tag alongs will just end up as glorified bipedal pets.

    Ember
Ember is someone I need in life.

She's fun, quirky, a talented Mage, an Old Soul, awkwardly affectionate, and sincere. Her childhood is tragic and all I want is to hold her until she gets annoyed. Then we can go explore for treasure, geek over Magic, and prove to the world how strong we can be and to not mess with us. She's had it hard and she deserves a good life without worry.

She's also Khajiit. That itself makes her awesome.

Also he doesn't mind a little bit of larceny here, a little bit of murdery there and likes mushrooms.

Every time Azandar turned his nose up Violet Coprinus harvesting made my blood boil; do you know how much these go for on traders and how many we consume to finance our lifestyle pardner?

Azandar also hates ToT and that is one of the few things my wife will actually play on ESO. So, that alone puts him on the bottom of my list.

For me, it's the opposite. I think Sharp has a great VA, and I think Ember's voice and personality are really annoying and I can't stand her, especially because she enjoys killing werewolves.

Thankfully ZOS has made a diverse cast of Companions to appeal to many different kinds of players.

@Zodiarkslayer I had Ember in Ghost Haven Bay farming runebox pieces and was near a fire, waiting for mobs to respawn. She walked up to the fire and made a comment about someone telling her that her eyes reminded them of the embers in a fire and that is how she got her name.

I’m not a fan of her but it was an interesting moment with her.

Only have Mirri and Ember so far, so no opinion about the others yet.

I find it depends on my frame of mind who I choose to play with, though often I don't use a companion at all unless I am doing dungeons, WBs, etc. (primarily solo player). Sometimes Ember's ebullience gets on my nerves so I generally prefer Mirri. I more often prefer her attitude, so I don't know what that says about my usual frame of mind, but there you have it.

Of all the companions we have, I love Sharp's voice the most. I enjoy the dry delivery of his lines and the fact that he has a black sense of humor in spite of all that's happened to him.

With Ember, I like her, but I was really hoping that if we got a Khajiit companion, that we'd get a more traditional Khajiit voice/back story. A lot of people really enjoy her, and I think that's wonderful, but I'm holding out hope that if we get another Khajiit someday, we'll get someone who hails from Elsweyr and elaborates on Khajiiti life.

    Definitely Sharp, then Ember.

I don't really think companions are a particular help in terms of combat, so I go by who I find the most tolerable. I don't like losing rapport by accidentally picking up a torchbug when I'm trying to jump. I find Bastian boring. Azandar is too much of a weird old man but I do like his class moves visually. Isobel is cool and all but I cannot handle the way that she bowls around like an extra from a Guy Ritchie movie.

Sharp lets me know when my gear is close to needing repairs and also whips out abolutely classic lines such as "Skill issue" when killing an enemy.

    Isobel is my favourite, because:

-The simplicity behind leveling her rapport as fast and costless as possible.

-She loves sweets, and so do i.

All three of my characters are Khajiit, so Ember kind of goes without saying. One big, happy Khajiit family!

I just wish her voice actor had given her a more exaggerated Khajiit accent. She doesn’t even sound like a Khajiit half the time. Yeah, yeah, I know she grew up in Skywatch, but still…

Why is her name Ember when she uses Lightning? I don't get it.
Well, stay still in one place with her summoned long enough and she will tell you why. It's one of her idle lines.
