Why have so many veteran players left the game recently?

Recently there are fewer and fewer old players in the dungeon.
And recently, fewer and fewer old players from our guild are online.
What is the reason for this?

The Steam database shows the number of players does not increase but decreases after Epic Free event and the following Free ESO Plus member event.
Although Steam is just one of the platform for ESO, it might be still the reference value.

could be any number of reasons

there are times i take breaks, though i still at least login to do the endeavors if i have nothing else scheduled, then go play something else

i would say the biggest thing would be burnout from any number of things such as too much grinding especially during the tight event schedule

some people just need a break, theres a lot of people that sometimes take a year or 2 hiatus due to stuff going on in RL or who knows what

I can't speak for everyone, but dissatisfaction with the direction of the game moving forward, the constant yo-yo nerfs and combat changes, the over correction of sets and skills based on niche uses in both PVE and PVP, and the ramping up of difficulty in new content while hamstringing the ability of the player to deal enough damage to compete when playing solo all seem to be leading causes.

I won't even get into the crown store and the predatory pricing practices born from it.

People walk away when the game they are investing into is no longer worth that investment.

I can only speak for myself of course but...
I recently left my last prog group and basically decided to quit raiding for the time being. The reasons are:
    * general burn out
    * change fatigue
    * bored of content (Sanity's Edge is just a very bad raid in my opinion)
    * almost all my "good" raid groups are gone

I might come back to serious raiding at some point in the future, but for now, I stick to doing my dailies and that's it.

I love ESO play Everyday! I can Tank or DPS with the best of them. Trials or Vet Dungeons. Buuuuuuuuuuuut!!! I agree with you 100% i actually Despise doing Trials and find no enjoyment out of them. The Rewards for me personally are not worth it at all.

I do not agree with folks that say Vet Trials should be accessible to everyone. I think honestly ZOS has made it so easy to Farm them and the Sets are not even Special. I am sorry but my DPS can Crush Rele (A kinda old Trial Set) Which is Single Target anyways. One of my Favorite Fun Sets is Alksoh it is way better than given credit for as it helps the entire group tons BUT...................... HAS NO PERFECT Bonus!.. I personally think if ZOS made VET Trials Even Harder and the Gear even Stronger it would bring back So many older groups and Push people harder. Running Normal trials are BLAH!!! and should not Reward People with Gear 1 line less than Vet trials. I will run Vet Dungeons all day as i find them to be tons of Fun! Especially Tanking.

I will list some reasons that apply to me and that I've heard among my dwindling circle of friends: No new content on the horizon for the rest of the year. Bugs not fixed for weeks and months. Anemic u39 has nothing at all for a vet player to be excited about. Crown crate gifting fiasco (taking away any motivation to farm / make gold, since it's pretty much worthless). Tired of adjusting to random combat changes and nerfs that serve no purpose. Sales and guild activity way down. Events made less fun (like the gutting of ZoZ drops). Other people playing less has a domino effect where people see their friends aren't around and they spend less time in the game, causing the cycle to repeat itself.

Also a lot of us who do run dungeons do so with friends and guildies, to avoid random group finder randomness and general reduced quality of groups, as more vet players leave and combat changes leave newer / casual players worse off than before (and players who are decent but not top tier are less able to carry a run).

How recently are you talking. If it’s over the last year, then U35 was a big catalyst. Not everyone who said they’d quit the game or raiding over that patch actually followed through, but a lot did. Enough that it had a notable impact on the number of end game players. Those who still play at that level are less likely to be recruiting and training for prog teams because they’re burned out on losing players and rebuilding after every Ill-conceived combat balance patch.

Just recently I’ve seen the sales of my 5-7 voucher equipment master writs that I list for just 1k just sit in the trader for a while when they sold almost immediately before. Makes me think a lot fewer people are playing now.

Gold writs I sold less than 500 gold per voucher I have had to list at much less (especially woodworking) to get them to move, and it’s still slow.
The trader gets full and my characters have to hold them until the next event.

Even Riften seems pretty quiet nowadays, not that that is all bad.

Why have so many veteran players left the game recently? Because there is nothing to do other than the same-old, same-old between DLC's and that gets boring fast. Once you've done everything, there's not much to do to keep yourself interested. Many will come back when the next DLC drops (and then leave again). There are too many AAA games being released this year and ESO can't compete.

It's not "recently", this has been going on for years.

This game does NOT try to make players stay. It doesn't try to keep players happy. It gets new players to spend as much money as possible, and makes them leave after realizing some facts that i don't know how to tell you without violating the "terms of service" and "code of conduct" of this forum.

ESO had the potential to be one of the best video games ever, but because of reasons we are not allowed to discuss here, it will never be more than it is right now.

I'll cite a reason: how about the fact that one of the most prominent devs openly mocked a large portion of the playerbase, not once, but twice?

Calling players whiners because they're bringing up genuine, valid concerns is a good way to annihilate the relationship with said players.

I'm no mind reader so i cant say what anothers reasoning is.

In general it seems that the only way to win in a relationship that isn't healthy is to walk away.

Is that what's happening here? HOW can i know?

All i can know is that's it's best to strike while the iron is hot. If you wait till the iron cools, you do not get the desired effect.

Let me use apples as an example for simple math.
You have 100 apples in your basket. Most of them already became red. So we have 75 red apples and 25 green.

Now you go to the dungeon and meet 3 random apples there.
It is 67525/161700 = 41.7% that all 3 apples in your group will be red. Only 2300/161700 = 1.5% to have all 3 green ones.

Let's add some interesting events to our basket. Free basic game giveaway for one week. After that a few free-to-play weeks for everybody who wants. It will add 200 green apples to our basket. So many apples. Not baad.
Now we have 75 red apples and 225 green ones in the same basket.

Now you go to the dungeon again and, surprise-surprise, meet 3 random apples there.
It is now 67525/4455100 = 1.5% to meet all 3 red apples. But it is 1873200/4455100 = 42.0% to have all 3 green ones.

How could it be?! It is a catastropy! No, actually it is not.
Running dungeons with new players is not that bad.
Also remember that many of those green apples will become red ones if everything goes well.

Just tell me now, how many red apples left the basket?

Lately DPS queues for dungeons are faster, guild chats are emptier, for a while before, even giant trial discords didn't have runs because the rosters weren't filling. The roster situation seems a bit better than it was the months following U35, but it comes and goes and the game does not seem as populated as it was before.

I think some decisions made by the team were bad, worst part is the communication around thoses decisions.

For exemple : nobody wanted U35 changes (longer duration dot, massive nerf for some classes, some templar thread about this got more than 11k views, introducing mara' balm). They didn't say anything about the templar nerf and animation change.
For mara it took almost a year to be adjusted.

For PvP: meta is boring because of the bad meta going on for months: you're not killed by high skilled player but by random playing cheesy set... And undeath passive need to be nerfed
