Why does Hide Shoulder cost 500 gold, but Hide Helm is free?

I think it sucks that it's 500 gold to hide your shoulder when the head is free.

I did it on 10 of my outfit slots on my main. Gold sink I guess?

I don't know but it wouldn't surprise me if it's simply because they were made at different times.

Hide helmet was added when the game was still in development and was always a 'special' option handled differently (originally you had to change it in one of the settings menus).

Whereas hide shoulders is a new option and the simplest way to get it into the game, especially as a festival unlock, was probably to make it an outfit skin with no actual skin attached, so that's what they did and they didn't change anything else about it so it still has the default cost for a new skin.

I'm just happy they added it, I'm not going to complain about a tiny 500 gold cost. If people keep finding things to complain about, they may just stop adding things like this altogether. I'm hoping they add 'hide chest' or 'hide belt' next.

My suspicion is that hide shoulder is an outfit style because it doesn't work with costumes, as they weren't made with that option in mind (in contrast to hide helmet).

because it's a shoulder style page and all shoulder styles released after base game are as far as i know 500 gold. makes sense to me.
it could be free but 500 gold is uh a pretty tiny amount of gold in this game

I guess because it's a style, unlike the hide helm option, and thus needs cost to be applied, and also because the game evolves and at this point we do need more permanent gold sinks (though at least the values is not that high and easily feasible to all players).

Styles don't have to cost anything to apply. They can even have different costs for different players. For example if you learned the Morag Tong style from the motif pages (or the whole book) they cost gold to use, but if you got it with Morrowind Collectors Edition it's free.

I just have issues with them charging event tickets for it, and then gold to use it every time.

It's awesome that they added this as an option in game. People have been asking for it for years. It opens up lots of possibilities for outfit design. 500 gold is a trivial amount of money in this game, regardless of platform. I'm having a hard time agreeing with the statement that "it sucks" as this all seems pretty great to me.

I can make 500 gold easily just by doing a daily quest. It's not really a big deal amount. Honestly if anything we do need more cash sinks in this game badly. That's the whole reason why this game's economy has gone out of wack. Here's hoping they add more stuff I can spend gold on like a barber

I'd say price indicates rarity/desirability. If they continue to release hide style pages for the other slots you know well they'll make the Hide Chests one cost at least 1k if not 3k like some styles do.

I bet it all boils down to ZOS wanting the player to "earn" things. If you want to apply (hide) a certain cosmetic you need to play the game to make the gold to achieve it.

It seems to be a common misconception (not just on here) that the only reason to object to the price of something is because you can't afford it. A lot of things can be over-priced even if they're cheap compared to other things.

I was buying some plant pots the other day and opted not to buy some which were 50p each, which is a trivial amount of money but they were the flimsy plastic kind you can normally get 10 for £1, so for what they were they were very expensive and not worth getting. (I bought a multi-pack from another shop instead.)

Same idea here. 500g is not a lot of money, but when an identical option for a different armour piece is free 500g still seems over-priced by comparison.

I doubt it will put anyone off using it and I don't expect it to ever be fixed, but to me it does look like someone used a default template for creating a new style piece and forgot to change the price.

If I were to think of a reason, then maybe it is because "hide helmet" used to be an option in the game menu. Just like we have an option to hide mount upgrades, there used to be an option to "hide helmet" in game settings, but for whatever reason it was moved to collections menu. I can imagine that it would cause a serious outrage if they would also start to charge gold every time you "toggle" it on/off.

Besides, you can "hide helmet" on the fly. You just pick it in your collections apparel menu. You don't need to use an outfit station... which got me thinking, as I have not checked it yet. Can you also "hide shoulders" on the fly, just by equipping it in the collection's menu ?

By using the system they did they can make any piece of armor be able to be hidden if they want to with only minor tweaks.
